In the early 1940s, New Theatres (NT) was going through some lean period as some of its films like ‘Meenakshi’ (1942), ‘Saugand’ (1942), ‘Kashinath’ (1943), ‘Waapas’ (1943) etc could not garner box office success. During this period, there were exodus of some of the artists and technicians from NT to Bombay. In this background, NT produced ‘Udayer Pathe’ (1944) in Bengali with some new artists, new technicians and also with a new director, Bimal Roy who was the Cinematographer and the Editor with NT. The film became a big box office success, recouping to some extent the lost glory of NT.

Regional language songs in Hindi movies- 1
————————————–
I had heard of ‘Rabindra Sangeet’ many years back in the context of our national anthem. Without knowing much about Rabindra Sangeet, in my younger days, I used to think that like Hindustani classical music, Carnatic classical music, folk music, Western classical music etc, Rabindra Sangeet was a different genre of music. (Now that I know it, I was not off the mark then). When I got associated with our Blog about 10 years back, I started looking at the Hindi film songs in a wider perspective encompassing, among other things, the genres of and the artists behind the Hindi film music. It was during the course of writing articles for the Blog covering songs of the golden period of Hindi film music, singers, lyricists and music directors that I came to know much about Rabindra Sangeet and its influence in Hindi film songs.

THE VIBRANT 40s (Episode No. 13)
————————————-
Today Mumbai (erstwhile BOMBAY) boasts of being the only place where Hindi films are made, but in the initial stages of Film-making, it was not so. There were other centres too, which made Hindi films like Calcutta, Poona, Kolhapur, Madras, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Lahore and some odd towns as well. Out of all these, the most famous and the biggest-qualitatively- had always been CALCUTTA.

Firstly, I would like to thank Atul for letting me write a few words about the songs of movies which I have liked over the years and have not been covered in this blog, so far.
I wish to start my association with this blog by writing about the songs of a movie which has been a favourite of mine since the time of its release in 1974. I am talking about the silver jubilee hit “Hamrahi”, an explosive entertainment studded to the brim with humour and high action. Undoubtedly, it is one of top 5 “full time pass” movies I have ever seen (and I have seen it over a dozen times).
