Shankar Jaikishan were the biggest names among Bollywood music directors for nearly two decades from 1950s to 1960s. It was in 1970 that Jaikishan died. Meanwhile “Mera Naam Joker” flopped big time. All these facts meant that Shankar Jaikishan musical duo was disbanded and moreover Raj Kapoor dropped Shankar Jaikishan ( then effectively only Shankar) from his subsequent movies.

I have just realised that when it comes to love songs in Bollywood, the lyrics do not believe in making small talk, rather they make big talk. The lover would not say such small things like “I love you”, rather he would talk on a much larger scale like how his love is forever, how his love can move mountains, etc.

“Mera Naam Joker” was a labour of love for Raj Kapoor and he had made this movie with great hopes and expectations. Unfortunately, the story was ahead of its times and the Indian movie watchers were not ready for such movies in 1970. The movie flopped and Raj Kapoor suffered great losses as a result.

Hum matwaale naujawan

I have read a lot about this song called “Hum matwaale naujawaan”. I was not much aware of this song. In fact, there is another song with similar lyrics sung by Rafi and Mukesh from a 1961 movie which itself is called “Hum matwaale naujawan”. But this song “hum matwaale naujawaan” is from an earlier movie called “Shararat” and is sung by Kishore Kumar.

“Sehra” was a musical blockbuster whose music was created by a less known music director viz. Ramlal. Lata had sung some very fine songs in this movie.

Ring tones has become a big business after the advent of mobile phones. In India, ring tones of movie songs are very popular. Though many people have new songs as their ringtones, some people like old songs as their ring tones as well.

Manna Dey was an outsider as far as singing mainstream songs were concerned. Unlike other singers, he was reduced to singing unusual songs viz songs for lesser characters in the movie, viz comedian etc. Difficult songs, unlikely to get popular with lay public viz semi classical songs were also given to him to sing. In fact, many of such semi classical songs were included in the movies to provide comic relief.
