Today’s song is from the film jailor-1938.
The film was made by Minerva Movietone. It was directed by Sohrab Modi. Music was by Meer Saheb and all the 11 songs of the film were written by a young, ambitious poet Ameer Haider Kamaal Amrohavi – who later on became Kamaal Amrohi, a director and husband of Meena Kumari. The cast of the film was Sohrab Modi, Leela CXhitnis, Sadiq Ali (who was known as ‘The Prince of Minerva), Eruch Tarapore ( a relative of Sohrab Modi, who worked only in his films and also sang), Sheela, Sharifa, Kusum Deshpande etc.

Not all of them are known or remembered by people. 95 % of these people are not remembered today. Most names had no faces. They were in the films without any specific personal identity. 5% names are known to many, but it is the special few names which became permanently etched in the minds of people.

“”Pukaar” (1939) was produced and directed by Sohrab Modi. The movie was about the mughal emperor Jahangeer. The movie had Chandramohan in the title role of Jahangeer with Naseem Bano playing Noorjahaan. The movie also had Sohrab Modi, Sheela, Sardar Akhtar, Sadiq Ali, Jillo, Maya Devi, Shakir, Ghulam Hussain, A B Ramesh, Kusum, Ram Apte, G M Das, Babu Singh etc in it.

“Pukaar” (1939) made by Sohrab Modi is regarded as a landmark movie in the history of Hindi movies. I as a pre teen kid was never impreessed by such talk of old movies being landmak movies. I never watched this movie nor bothered to listen to its songs. And now, this movie as well as its songs have become too rare to find.
