Today’s song is from the film Das Baje-1942.

The year 1942 was an eventful year for the Hindi cinema industry. The age old studio system had started crumbling and clever and ambitious directors started leaving studios to establish their own set up. Among these, the prominent were a group of disgruntled and dissatisfied artiates from Bombay Talkies, consisting of S. Mukherjee, Rai8bahadur Chunilal, Ashok Kumar, Sawak Wachha etc, who left and established a new entity named Filmistan. Then there were Mehboob Khan, A.R.kardar, V.Shantaram with their loyalists, Homi Wadia who left their parent studios and made new beginnings with their own studios. New Theatre, Calcutta lost Debki bose, P.C.barua, K.L.Saigal, K.N.Singh, Kidar Sharma etc.

Today’s song is from the film Mera Ladka-1938. This was a film made by Prabhat Film Company, which was one of the most popular banners in India those days. Prabhat was the company which made the First Talkie ” अयोध्येचा राजा ” in Marathi (Ayodhya ka Raja in Hindi) in 1932. During the period of 1932 to 1944, Prabhat gave excellent films having reformative and educational content for the society of those days, combined with entertainment. Their peak came when films like Sant Tukaramin Marathi-1936 Duniya na maane-1937 and Aadmi-1939 became milestones in Indian film history. The person who took Prabhat to its peak was V. Shantaram, as a Director.

Today’s song is from the film Taramati-45. This is an obscure film. None of its songs are available on YouTube or with Saregama. I was lucky to get hold of this rare song from one of my friends. Taramati-45 was produced by Ramniklal Shah, under his banner Ramnik Films. Yes, he is the same Ramniklal Shah, who married actress Indurani. Ramnik productions were known to make action/stunt films or C grade adventure films. Sometimes they would go for Mythological films. Actually, this was their first Mythological film.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No.49
————————————————–

In my younger days, I remember to have watched Marathi film ‘Kunku’ (1937) on Bombay Doordarshan (now ‘Sahyadri’ Channel). At that time, I was not aware that ‘Duniya Na Maane’ (1937) was its Hindi version. Even it did not occur to me that the subject chosen for the film was very bold. I have no much recollections of the songs of the film but Shanta Apte’s performance has remained in my mind as it was quite different as compared with the theatrical acting by most of the actors of that time. Even her song renditions were looking natural as against the ‘fixed gaze’ style of song renditions witnessed in most of the films at that time.
