Today is the 83rd birthday of Sulochana Kadam (nee Chavan) whose singing career started, more or less, at the same time that of Lata Mangeshkar and Geeta Dutt. While the latter two playback singers are well known even to the current generation, the name of Sulochana Kadam may not sound familiar to them. However, she is well known as lavani Singer Sulochana Chavan in Maharashtra, South Madhya Pradesh and North Karnataka.

This was the beginning of the peak of the “Golden Era” of HFM which for the next 10 to 15 years gave immense everlasting musical happiness to people in India. A short career of five years from 1948 to 1952. Just 20 films. Less than sixty songs. And then, a departure from Bombay, and back to Delhi. Settled into family life, and made a famous career with Punjabi folk music, that lasted well over six decades. But never headed to Bombay again.
