A short career of five years from 1948 to 1952. Just 20 films. Less than sixty songs. And then, a departure from Bombay, and back to Delhi. Settled into family life, and made a famous career with Punjabi folk music, that lasted well over six decades. But never headed to Bombay again.

Remembering Surinder Kaur on the anniversary of her birth (25th November).

When the songs of film ‘Shaheed’ (1948) were released, the song titled “Badnaam Naa Ho Jaaye Mohabbat Ka Fasaana” captured the interest and attention of the listeners. This was young Surinder Kaur’s first introduction to the listening public. The song became very popular. Although she had recorded songs for the film ‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’ earlier than songs of ‘Shaheed’, the latter film was released earlier. More singing offers followed in quick succession. However, the coastal climate did not agree with her, and she started losing health. In 1952, after recording one song for the film ‘Aadhiyaan’, under the music direction of Ustad Aki Akbar Khan, she returned to Delhi, and settled down for good.

In remembrance, I present this wonderful rendition by her, from the 1948 film ‘Laal Dupatta’. The film is produced under the banner of Akaash Chitra, and is directed by KB Lal. The lead pair in this film is Madhubala and Sapru. Other cast of actors includes Ranjeet Kumari, Ulhas, Neelam, Rajan Haksar, Kesari, Bhaga Bai, Gulzar, Pandit Iqbal, and Yusuf etc. The 12 songs in the film are written by DN Madhok, Manohar Khanna and Munshi Shams. This song is written by Manohar Khanna. Music is by Gyan Dutt. This is the fifth song of this film to be showcased here on this blog.

Listen and enjoy.

Song-Mere uljhe uljhe sapne (Laal Dupatta)(1948) Singer-Surinder Kaur, Lyrics-Manohar Khanna, MD-Gyan Dutt

Lyrics

ooooo
oooo

mere uljhe uljhe sapne
mere uljhe uljhe sapne
sulajh na paayen
ulajhte jaayen
koi suljhaaye re ae ae
mere uljhe uljhe sapne
mere uljhe uljhe sapne
kyun mann mera ghabraaye
kyun mann mera ghabraaye
chain na paaye
koi batlaaye re
mere uljhe uljhe sapne
mere uljhe uljhe sapne

reh reh kar mann kisey pukaare ae
jhoome jawaani kis ke sahaare
jhoome jawaani kis ke sahaare
meri samajh kaam na aaye
meri samajh kaam na aaye
karoon kya haaye
koi samjhaaye re
mere uljhe uljhe sapne
mere uljhe uljhe sapne

aankhon mein
aankhon mein masti chhaayi si
aankhon mein masti chhaayi si
nas nas mein ik angdaayi si
ay. . .
angdaayi si

kahin koi dekh na paaye
kahin koi dekh na paaye
laaj mohey aaye
nazar jhuk jaaye re
mere uljhe uljhe sapne
mere uljhe uljhe sapne ae ae

hui umangen kyun deewaani
har dam kehti nai kahaani
hui umangen kyun deewaani
har dam kehti nai kahaani
mohey raah soojh na paaye
mohey raah soojh na paaye
kidhar ko jaaye
jiyaa kalpaaye re
mere uljhe uljhe sapne
mere uljhe uljhe sapne
sulajh na paayen
ulajhte jaayen
koi suljhaaye re. . .
mere uljhe uljhe sapne

ओssss ओsss
ओssssss
