Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.
There was a film in 1937 also with the same title. The story of both the films were on similar lines. But do you know what the meaning of the word Guru Ghantal is ? I did not know, but I found out from a Hindi-English dictionary, published in 1889. This was compiled by ” The Rev. T.Craven, M.A.”, in Lucknow. Many years ago, I had a habit of roaming on the streets of big cities like Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta or even smaller cities like Poona, Lucknow or Hyderabad, in search of second hand old and rare books. I found this dictionary of Hindi-English-Hindi and Urdu-English-Urdu words for sale in Lucknow. It was quite a thick book and occupied considerable space in my suitcase. The book is extremely useful and I have to use it very carefully because, being so old-135 years- its pages have become brittle and delicate. It is one of my prized possessions !

“Director”(1947) was directed by S Shafaqat, MA for Don Films, Punjab. The movie had Salim, Raza, Zeb Qureshi, Zahoor Raja, Arif, Mohini Das, Hafiz etc in it.

A song that I had explored and located, albeit very delayed for the purpose. This song fits in so well with the ‘Nain Laage’ series that Nahm ji has treated us with, in the recent past. By the time I was able to locate this song and upload it, Nahm ji had already dropped the curtain on the series. And so, with her permission, I am posting this song directly.

This is the 3rd song in “Gems from Obscure films” series. The film is GURU GHANTAL-1956. It was a V K pictures film produced by R N Sharma and N K Kaushik. Directed by the veteran S M Yusuf, the film had music by Lachhiram Tamar.

“Main Suhaagan Hoon” (1964) is a Nayyar Films Production. It was produced by V N Nayyar and directed by Kundan Kumar. Starcast of the movie had names like Mala Sinha, Ajit, Mishra, Kewal Kumar, Nazir Hussain, Nishi,Ramayan Tiwari, Durga Khote, Chand Burque, Najma, Raja, Kesri, Daya Devi, Altaf, Sarla, Mastram, Indira Bansal, T.N.Sinha, Sardul, Bimla, Rajnath, Manohar, Bihari etc.

I recall this song from my younger days. This has to be the ultimate chaayaageet song. I recall listening to this song emanating from radios late at night after 10 PM and wondering why they had to play such boring songs at that time. And now, when I stumbled upon this song again, I felt like I had discovered a great treasure.
