Wo din yaad karo

The moment we see the caption for this song “woh din yaad karo, woh din yaad karo ” the mind somehow produced the image of Mehmood and Shobha Khote singing this. I dont know how it happened to me, because I dont remember seeing this song before. I havent seen this movie either. This song was frequently played on vividh bharati. May be my mother had told me that this was a Mehmood -Shobha Khote song, and the information was stored somewhere in the deep recesses. Similar thing happened the other day with ‘Ajahun na aaye baalma saawan beeta jaaye”. This song from ‘Saanjh aur Savera’ has roughly the same team of Mehmood-Shobha, with only S. Kalyanpur replacing Lata. It is a classical, sort of jugalbandi song. When I saw the video I knew I had seen it on T.V. in “Chhaayageet ” or “Chitrahaar”.

Starcast of the movie had Ashok Kumar, Manoj Kumar, Rajshree, Nirupa Roy, Lalita Pawar, Indrani Mukherjee, Mehmood, Sudesh Kumar, Shubha Khote, Iftekhar, Bipin Gupta, Kanhaiyalal, Manmohan Krishna, Bharati Malwankar, Achala Sachdev, Gajanan Jagirdar etc in it.

Starcast of the movie included names like Mehmood, Ameeta, Minoo Mumtaz, Helen, Anwar Hussain,Raj Kishore, Raj Dutt, A.R.Bengali, Munshi Munaqqa, Maqbool, Yusuf, Abdul, Mono, Sevanand, Bela Bose, Aruna, Harikishan, Ebrahim, Khursheed Bawra, Pappoo, Altaf, Brij Sharma, S.N.Bannerjee, Nazir Hussain, Achala Sachdev, Kumar etc.

Recently , while discussing a mujra song composed by R D Burman, I made this observation that R D Burman had composed very few songs of this genre.
Now I have been given a list of lots and lots of mujra songs compositions of R D Burman by Prakashchandra. In fact he sent me the lyrics of a mujra song from the debut movie of R D Burman. Now I am suitably humbled by all this information which was not known to me.

The general impression of a qawwaali is that is sung by a group of singers and musicians together. Either it is one group that is presenting, with one or two lead singers, a number of other singers providing the chorus, and some members of the group are playing the musical instruments. Or it is a presentation by two groups composed as described above, who may be competing with each other, in presenting ideas about a specific theme. This latter variation is called ‘baitbaazi’ .
