Mukesh and his Co-Singers –14

I have covered Mukesh’s songs composed by Sharda in my previous post.

I have also tried to cover many aspects of her career, but a few more details remain. A lot can be written about her association with Shankar and the various gossips and stories. But then, what is also known is that Sharda never revolted or reacted to these. She continued her life and career with whatever she came across. As such, a thought ran through my mind that it is better to stick to facts and statistics rather than the personal lives of artists.
We all have our likes and dislikes. I am not particularly fond of Sharda’s voice. But, then in many of her songs there is this unconventional, distinctive childish texture in her voice. In many songs that she sang this was a welcome change and did manage to capture the attention of music lovers. In an era where heroines were evolving into more mature roles and free expressions, such a voice suited their antics on the screen.

Today (22 july) is the birthday of Mukesh. This gives us an opportunity to dedicate the day for some as yet undiscussed Mukesh songs.

Mukesh had a singing career that began in 1941 with “Nirdosh” (1941) and he had a playback career lasting 26 years till he died in 1976. During his career, he sang around 800 songs in Hindi movies. We in this blog have already discussed 452 of them. So we are already more than halfway there. If we discuss the remaining Mukesh songs at the rare of one song daily and more on special occasions like his anniversaries, then I hope that we will be able to cover all remaining Mukesh songs by this date the next year.

“Mera Naam Joker” (1970) was an ambitious movie of Raj Kapoor which unfortunately failed big time at the box office when it was released. The box office debacle was so big that it took Raj Kapoor quite some time to recover from it, and when he recovered, he had made a clean break from the past, in the sense that his musical team was totally revamped.

Raj Kapoor was one such movie maker who paid heavily for overestimating the calibre of his audience. His ambitious labour of love “Mera Naam Joker” fell flat at the box office.
