Today’s song is from a 72 year old Costume film- Shamsheer-1953.

Though the film was made by Sargam Pictures, Bombay, after completion of the film, all the rights were purchased by Bombay Talkies – which was already sinking and was unable to make films on its own. Just to save Bombay Talkies, all the current and ex employees of the company got together and made a film- Baadbaan-1954. However, this could not save Bombay Talkies and it was sold to Tolaram Jalani.

Film Shamsheer-1953 was directed by Gyan Mukherjee. It had 2 MDs- Arun Kumar Mukherjee and Anupam Ghatak. There were 3 Lyricists. The cast was Ashok Kumar, Bhanumathy, Smriti Biswas, Rama Shukul, Nana Palshikar, Mehmood, Bhagwan and many others.

Today’s song is from the film Shamsheer-1953.

Just 6 years after India’s independence, the Hindi film industry was working normally. Young and enthusiastic directors were trying out their hands at a variety of films. The country was stabilised and it looked with wide eyes at the changes in the world. Italian Neorealism was becoming popular among filmmakers all over the world. There was enough material in India which needed films depicting Neo-Realism, so that the social ills could be rectified.

Today’s song is from a Hindi film made in Madras with South actors, a Debutante lady Director and an M.D. pair. The film was “Chandirani”-1953, simultaneously made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

The year was 1948. A developing and fast growing southern film studio was making an ambitious Tamil film on a very big scale. The producer Director was very ambitious and he wanted his film to be All India famous. The only way to make it happen was to make this film in Hindi too, so that the All India market can be captured. His thought was final and thus began the historical thrust of south made Hindi films into the Hindi market of all India with S.S.Vasan’s giant film venture ” Chandralekha” in Tamil and Hindi languages. The film had taken 5 years to be made.

During my school days it was my hobby (or habit?) to see films on every Saturday and Sunday. Ours was a big joint family and my absence was hardly noticed by anyone. May be my absence was welcome ! I do not know. Anyway, during the holidays more films were seen. Language was no bar. I saw Hindi, English, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada films. Out of these Hindi films were kore and other languages films were much less.

Recently,I came across a duet song ‘chanda tale muskuraaye jawaaniyaan’ from the film ‘CHANDI RANI’ (1953) sung by Talat Mehmood and P Bhanumathi. I had never heard of the film or the song. From the Indian Film Trade and other websites, I could gather that the film was produced under the banner of Bharani Pictures jointly owned by P S Ramakrishna Rao and P Bhanumathi and directed by herself. The film was made in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi and released simultaneously. This was her debut film as a director. She was also the lead actor ( double roles) with N T Rama Rao. I could not get synopsis of this film but I guess from the title of the film that it was a film based on some fairy tale. It is said that with this film, she became the first woman in the history of Indian film industry to produce, direct, act and sing in a film.
