Divinity remembered today. Divinity – as in the voice of the divine – KL Saigal.
A hundred and sixteen years ago, this day, 11th April in 1904, was born a child who would be a legend within his own lifetime, short as it was, and forever be one. The legend continues to sustain more than a hundred years hence. The sound of the songs rendered by him continue to enchant generation after generation of listeners whose constancy of devotion has not, cannot be influenced by the superfluity of singing voices that have also performed since then. Saigal is Saigal, in his own might, in his own dimension – a voice that has not been matched in its depth, in its sentimental expression, and the effect it has on the minds and hearts of the listeners.

During the last two years or so, I have been working on a major exercise of presenting rare songs from films released in the 1940s on the Blog. In the process, I became aware of some of the productions houses (called banners), producers, directors, actors, singers, lyricists and music directors etc that were unknown to me earlier. One of the little known banners which I came to know about during the last few months was Sunrise Pictures. But I had no idea about the owner/s of this banner.

This article is the 13300th song post in the blog.
A century post – and a discovery of monumental proportions. Things cannot get more rare, and better, than this.
We are at a century marker with this post – 13,300 – thirteen thousand three hundred to be exact. Atul ji and I exchanged some thoughts on whether to hold back this important discovery for a bigger, more major milestone up ahead. But then we decided that the wait of some more months will be too much. Let us introduce this discovery at 13,300 itself, and then we will have a few more opportunities to bring on other parts, other songs of this discovery.

During the early days of sound films in 1931, Calcutta (Kolkata) film centre had actresses like Patience Cooper, Jahanara Kajjan, Violet Cooper, Anwari, Sabita Devi (real name: Iris Maude Gasper), Kanan Devi, Radharani etc. Most of them had graduated from the silent films. Those days, in the absence of playback singing system, actresses had to sing their own songs in the films. So, those with good voices also got chance to act in the films made especially in the 30s. Begum Akhtar, Mukhtar Begum, Indubala, Kamala Jharia etc are few names that come to my mind. Ratan Bai was also one of those who joined the bandwagon of actresses in Calcutta in 1932 as an actor-singer. Incidentally, this Ratan Bai (Begg) was a different actor and as such she should not to be confused with Ratan Bai (Shilotri), the mother of Shobhna Samarth.

Sajjaad Hussain – the enigmatic genius of the industry. A self trained composer par excellence, for whom the venerated Anil Biswas has used the epithet of the “only original composer” in Hindi films. An artist whose composition have the capacity to surprise you and confound you at the same time. No other music director comes even close to creating the fusion of the spoken sound and the music so seamlessly and so beautifully, and one is left wondering at the depth of this genius as he will move from one arrangement to another one, as the song moves from one antaraa to the next one.
