With Hindi movie songs of the golden era, finding unknown gems in easy. Just look at the songs of any forgotten movie or look for less popular songs from better known movies. And more often than not, one will come up with a good collection of great unknown songs on a regular basis.

I have not counted the number of songs sung by Rafi for Shammi Kapoor, but it is high time I did that. There are so many of them, and it is amazing how Rafi could summon so much energy and enthusiasm every single time he had to sing a song for Shammi Kapoor. Just about everyone of these songs are gems, that have stood the test of time.

“Waqt” (1965) was a path breaking movie in more ways than one. For one, it was a multistarrer movie, one decade before this term came into circulation. Secondly, it was the movie that set the rules for lost and found movies which became the norm one decade later. In brief, “Waqt” (1965) inspired movie makers like G P Sippy (Sholay, Shaan) as well as Manmohan Desai (Amar Akbar Anthony).

Mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin

Two female singers dancing in tandem was a staple diet of B grade historical/ mythological movies of 1960s. But here we find the same thing happening in a Muslim social movie. The movie is “Mere Mehboob” (1963) and here Sadhana and Ameeta are found dancing and singing joyously. They sing in the voices of Lata and Asha Bhonsle respectively.

Hindi movies, especially those of 1960s and 1970s, often had a birthday song in it. Many of these birthday songs have gone on to become evergreen birthday songs which are played/sung in birthdays even today.

When I got the farmaish for this song “Ek but banaaungaa” from “Asli Naqli” (1962) and played this song, I thought I was going to listen to the song “ek but banaaungaa tere ghar ke saamne”, but I found myself listening to a different song, viz “ek but banaaungaa teraa aur poojaa karoongaa”.

There is one genre of movies that is popularly known as Muslim socials. These are love stories among Muslim characters. These movies tend to have spectacular music in it typically composed by Ravi, Naushad,Roshan, Laxmikant Pyarelal etc. The lyrics of these songs are quite poetic with reference to words like “hizaab”, “Bahaar”, “Shokhi”,”mehboob” etc.

It is practically impossible to talk of actors or hit films of Bollywood of the early 70s and not speak of Rajesh Khanna in the same breath. He was synonymous with Bollywood hit movies at that time and though other heroes did manage a few hits between them, he was THE towering figure amongst them all at that time.

There are few actors in Hindi cinema of yesteryear who evoke as much passion in film-lovers as Shammi Kapoor. He came into cinema at a time when pathos ruled and emotional tragedies, a la Devdas, were the order of the day. Although he made an effort to fit in, he was thankfully (for all of us) a miserable failure in his efforts.

I was under the impression that I had posted all the songs from “Mera Saayaa” (1966), but in reality I have so far posted only four songs from this movie. There are more memorable songs in this movie that are yet to be posted.
