“Shabaab” (1954) was a Sadiq Preoduction movie. It was produced and directed by M Sadiq. Star cast of the movie included names like Bharat Bhushan, Nutan, Badri Prasad, Yashodhara Katju, Wasti, etc. From the songs of this movie, I have deduced that the storyline of this movie was losely based on Sanskrit scholar Bilhan’s work which was written in 11th century AD. Bilhan should not be confused with Kalhan who also lived in the same areas (Kashmir), but one century later and who wrote “Rajtarangini”.

There were three top heroes in Hindi movies in 1950s. Of them, viz. Raj Kapoor expired in 1980s and Dev Anand just a few days back. One of them, viz Dilip Kumar is still around. He in fact is celebrating his 89th birthday today. He was born on 11 th december 1922 in Peshawar, now in Pakistan. He made his debut in Hindi movies with “Jwaar Bhata” (1944) and his made his mark as a hero with “Jugnu” (1947) and soon he became a hot property in Hindi movies and earned him the sobriquet of “Tragedy king”. It is not an accurate description, becuase he has worked in several light hearted movies as well.

“Ummeed” (1971) is an obscure movie, despite this movie being of relatively recent vintage by the standards of this blog. This movie was a Rajan Films production and it was directed by Nitin Bose. The cast of this movie included names like Ashok Kumar, Nanda,Leela Naidu, Joy Mukherjee, Tuntun, Agha, Leela Misra etc. This movie must have sunk without a trace, because I have not heard of this movie despite this movie getting released when I was at my most alert and curious as a pre teen kid.
