In 2003 this was a very popular song.  They would constantly play this song on FM channels.  We had kept a small FM radio in the office, and usually it was kept on from mid-day, when all the urgent work of the section was done.  Rest of the work could be handled while listening to songs on FM radio. Listening to it many times, tends to make transcribing the lyrics, an easy task. Analyzing the words and their meaning is not so simple.

Ganesh Chaturthi is the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha. It falls on the Shukla Chaturthi (4th day after Amavasya) in the month of Bhadrapada of the Hindu calendar i.e. August-September of the Gregorian calendar. Now this is common to the whole of India. And everyone has their own list of prasad that they offer to the lord. And all the panchang reading elders will tell us that when the Chaturthi starts etc and for how many days the festival will be for (usually 10) but due to the lunar calendar that is followed there will be some ghatika calculations which will determine if the festival ends on the 10th or 11th day.

Republic day is a holiday that nearly everyone looks forward to in this country.

As a kid I would hate the day, though. We would have to get ready even earlier than usual, find our way to school for the ‘jhanda vandan’ – flag hoisting ceremony. I would usually be both in the marchpast and the patriotic dance. So, I would have to do a sneak off as soon as the flag is hoisted and get in costume for a badly choreographed patriot dance which had more in common with the actions that accompany a nursery rhyme.

I would then head back home where the society ‘jhanda vandan‘ would be over already and there would be poha for breakfast. My friends and I would chill together and then head home once our parents have finally gone hoarse from calling out to us for lunch. Then of course it would be the ol’e hearty meal and hearty sleep routine.
