I became aware that the movie ’83’ was releasing on 24 December 2021. I watched the trailer that was released on YouTube. Like most Indians, the trailer struck a chord with all normal Indians. Normal Indian means one who is interested in movies as well as cricket.

Like most normal Indians, I loved the trailer. What impressed me was the fact that Ranveer Singh, playing Kapil Dev, looked, acted, spoke and performed so much like Kapil Dev that it convinced the viewers that the movie makers had taken great pains in making the movie as authentic as possible.

Normally people go to watch a movie without knowing the story line, but here was a movie whose story was very well known to everyone. People were interested to know how the story was told and how the actors playing various cricketers had performed. For someone like me who knew the details of the world cup quite well, I realized that the plot of the World cup, as it unfolded, actually made it fit for a thrilling Hindi movie. The movie had ingredients like David vs Goliath fight, where David slays the Goliath. The movie had great drama where the team snatches win from the jaws of a certain defeat, and with that the self belief of not just a team but that of an entire nation gets ignited.

I know the story, but what about the younger generation who were not born at that time. Their knowledge of 1983 world cup is sketchy, and this movie would give them details that they were not aware of. So the main reason why I wanted to watch the movie was not to know the story (which I already knew), but for the following reasons:-
1. How the story has been told
2. How the actors have performed.
3. Refreshing the memories of those days
4. To watch the reaction of the younger generation
5. the usual reason- to watch a movie for entertainment

Like most normal Indians, the movie had caught my imagination and I began to toy with the idea of watching this movie first day first show. But then first day was 24 december 2021 and first show would have coincided with the prime time of office, so I thought that may be I should watch it second day, which was a Saturday (a holiday) as well as Christmas, making it a holiday for even those who do not have their holidays on Saturday. After lots and lots of thought, I decided that I would watch the movie first day first show and I would take CL for 24 December.

By a happy coincidence, my wife as well as daughter had to join me at my place. I was keen that they should join me in watching the movie. My wife joined me first, on 11 December. I gradually started to discuss the subject of the movie with my wife. Were you aware of the fact when India had won the cricket world cup in 1983? I asked her. Why I would not be aware? You think you are the only person aware of such matters? My wife retorted back.

She claimed that she had watched the match on TV. How could you be watching this match on TV in 1983? She claimed that TV had already arrived in Jabalpur in 1983 when she was studying in the Jabalpur Medical college. She also stated that one of her brothers, a great Jhumri Tilaiyya style farmaish sender had won a black and white TV in a radio or magazine quiz, and so her household already had a TV on those days.

When our daughter joined us one week later, I asked her whether she would like to watch the movie ’83’ first day first show. She agreed. So it was finalized. She herself booked the tickets online on her mobile. But she put a condition. We would go to the movie hall in our car, and she would drive. This made me nervous because she is not a very experienced driver, but she wants to gain expertise on car driving. In any case, her car driving skill is vastly superior to that of my wife, and she has the experience of driving cars in Goa and Mumbai so I reluctantly agreed.

It was on 22 December that I gave my application for CL. My steno came informing me that my CL card is blank, so the previous place has not sent the updated figure for my CLs. I told him that it is the updated figure as I had not taken any CL for the entire year, or for that matter any leave of any nature in the whole year.

The next day, while it was time to go home, I inquired whether the CL was sanctioned. I was informed that it was, so I went back home on the evening of 23 December knowing that I was watching the movie first day first show.

The movie was released in Gorakhpur in two different locations. The morning show on one location was at 9:30 AM and at another place it was 11:45 AM. The 9:30 AM timing was going to be too early, seeing that the daughter does not even wake up by that time so we had chosen 11:45 show which happened to be the first day first show for that location. It had the added advantage that the place was located close to our residence, so it needed less driving skill on the part of our daughter.

We left for the show with the daughter at the driver’s seat. Just as we left after the gate was opened, our junior dog Izza saw her opportunity and escaped from the gate. Now we were chasing her in the car, and she was running away on the road ahead of us. Just when we were worried that she would run up to the busy main road, she came across two street dogs. Those street dogs began to chase her. She turned back and began to run towards the residence. We turned the car back, and saw that the driver of my office car, who was asked to stay back, had caught Izza. He took her back to the residence. He is used to this task as he had to perform this task of catching the habitually “bhagodi” Izza and taking her back to the residence on quite a few occasions.

That done, we left for the show. I was not much impressed with the driving skill of the daughter, which I thought needed lots of polishing, but thankfully she managed to brave the heavy traffic (including perhaps the busiest chauraaha of Gorakhpur (called Mohaddipur chauraaha) and reached the multiplex. While parking the car in the parking lot, her reversing skills left something to be desired. but finally she managed to park the car.

When we reached the multiplex, we realized that it had four halls and the movie ’83’ was scheduled to be shown in all the four halls. But the first show that we had arrived to watch, was being showed in just one hall. It is a 3 D movie and so every movie goer was being handed over a 3 D goggle. I recalled that I had first watched a 3 D movie way back in 1980s. I recalled that I had also watched a 3 D animation movie in Bareilly in 2016. So it was going to be the third time that I would be watching a 3 D movie.

The hall was quite empty. Not more that 50 people were there. It was first show and there were obviously not too many takers for first day first show on a working day. Most viewers appeared to be old timers. Our daughter was one of the few who was not.

From the beginning on the movie, it became clear to me that the movie makers had made lots of efforts in research and story telling and what they were trying to show was more or less how it was back then in 1983.

The movie opens with PR Man Singh (played by Pankaj Tripathi) trying to arrange logistics for the Indian players who had to leave for England. Youngsters today do not realize that India was a desperately poor third world country those days. Today we may be flush with foreign currency (over $ 650 billions) and so an Indian traveler going abroad can spend any amount of foreign currency but that was not so back then. Any Indian touring abroad was looked as a financial burden on the economy because he would exhaust the scarce foreign currency that the country had. So there was a limit on the foreign currency that an India tourist could take with him. And the amount allowed was ridiculously low.

Not just Indian government even the country where you went as an Indian looked down upon you. People looked down upon Indians with condescension because Indians had not achieved anything of note at the world stage. The initial scenes of the movie captures it nicely. We see West Indian cricketers are received at the Heathrow airport with fanfare by the British Media. When the West Indies team leaves and the area clears up, we find Indian cricketers standing there, looking unwanted and uncared for. No media attention, and no one available to receive them.

There are Indians who take such humiliations lying down as a matter of life and do nothing about it. There is a small minority of Indians who tell themselves- OK, today I am getting this treatment. But I will make sure that it will not remain that way in future. It is very clear that the Indian team contained some such Individuals in its side. Gavaskar was one, Kapil Dev was another. And the rest of Indians would get molded into this way of thinking with time. There were such people in India in the other walks of life as well. Personally I counted myself among such Indians. Indians who had not achieved much but wanted to achieve it in future. Indians who had smaller ego and big self respect, who had urge to progress.

The first few scenes of the movie drives this message home emphatically and I heartily concur. And I dare say, so do most viewers watching the movie. So the movie had conquered its viewers in the first few minutes itself. The rest of the movie that followed was a glorious icing on the top of the cake.

The matches of the tournament are well chronicled. We all know about them. The matches actually followed the pattern that a well made thriller movie needs.

The initial scenes show how India loses all its practice matches, even against teams as nondescript as minor counties.

The movie shows Indians watching videos of West Indian cricketers. Indian viewers who were not born at that time get some scary introduction about the dreaded pace battery that West Indies possessed at that time. We find Srikkanth (played by Jeeva) exclaiming – “is it a cricket video or a horror film video?”

The first match that India played was against West Indies, the defending champions. The match was rain interrupted and it needed two days to get completed. The picturisation builds up the narrative nicely and beautifully. Rain interruption is used to mock Indians- “they are being saved by the rain”. When rain stops and match begins, the mocking tone changes to -“Indians did not pray to rain gods hard enough. Now they have no choice but to face the West Indians on the field.”

India kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but they kept the scoreboard moving thanks to useful contributions by most Indian batsmen, and the effort was capped by Yashpal Sharma who scored 89. India ended up on 262/8. It was the highest score of India in a world cup match. Yashpal Sharma’s 89 was the highest Individual score by an Indian batsman in a world cup match till date.

When West Indies began their chase, they were expected to overhaul the total with ease. Whether it was overconfidence, or whatever, West Indies after reaching 49 for no loss, began losing wickets at regular intervals. They were soon 130/8 and then 157/9. But not for nothing were they a two time world champions. In the first world cup in 1975, in thematch between West Indies and Pakistan, Pakistan had scored 268. West Indies while chasing, kept losing wickets at regular intervals were reduced to 203/9. Still the tenth wicket partnership of Derek Murray and Andy Roberts added 64 runs to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Here in the match against India, the tenth wicket partnership of Garner and Roberts threatened to do the same. They had added 71 runs for the tenth wicket to take the score to 228. At that score, Garner became a bit overconfident and stepped out to hit Ravi Shastri for a six. The ball elude his bat and reached the gloves of Kirmani who effected a stumping to earn India a historical win in the world cup. It was the first world cup defeat for West Indies. It was easily the first real win for India in a world cup match.

India defeated Zimbabwe easily as expected in their second match. Then normal service seemingly resumed for India. In the next match, Australia, who had lost in a major upset to Zimbabwe in their first match pulverized India by 162 runs. In the next match, West Indie s hammered India by 66 runs. So, things were back to normal. We expected that India, apart from that upset victory against West Indies would only beat Zimbabwe, and get eliminated in the group stages.

But in the next match against Zimbabwe, the demons of 1979 seemingly surfaced again. India kept losing wickets after wickets. At 17/5, India had no business staying in the tournament, but Gods in heavens had something big in store. In that divine scheme of things, India did something that was not done before. There was a semblance of recovery when the sixth wicket partnership took the score to 77. It became 77 for six and then 78 for 7. Even the mentally toughest human would throw in the towel after that. But not the Indians at the crease. The batsmen at the crease were Kapil Dev and Madan Lal. They took the score to 140 and then it was 140 for 8. Madan Lal gone. Now only Kirmani, a decent batsman, and Sandhu, a certified rabbit with the bat were left. Kirmani kept defending, not risking his wicket, while Kapil Dev began to take calculated risk. When the curtains were drawn on Indian innings, India had not lost another wicket and had reached 266/8.

This match was not covered on TV, and so this gave the movie makers a good opportunity to picturise this match as they wished. The movie makers took some liberty with the story as well. For instance, Kapil Dev is shown using Mongoose bat during the second half of his innings. In reality, Mongoose bat was introduced by Australians (namely Mathew Hayden) some three decades later.

Kapil Dev is shown hitting sixes that clear the ground and break windscreens of cars parked there. Then Kapil Dev finds everyone applauding a single that he takes. He wonders why everyone is applauding a single. Even his partner Kirmani is clueless. Kapil Dev turns to the umpire who is also applauding. He asks the umpire what is the matter ? “You have just broken the world record. That is what is the matter.”- the umpire informs him. Indeed, Kapil Dev, while playing the knock of his life had broken the record of highest one day individual total of 171 not out, which was earlier held by New Zealand’s Glen Turner.

The Indian total was deceptively similar to the total that India had reached against West Indies in the first match that India won. When Zimbabwe chased, their start was quite West Indies like. If West Indies were 49 for no loss at one stage, then Zimbabwe too were 44 for no loss. After the first wicket fell, Zimbabwe too started to lose wickets at regular interval. They became 6 down for 117. Then Kevin Curran began to bat like Kapil Dev and took Zimbabwe to 230 for 8. Then he fell, caught by Shastri, while trying to hit Madan Lal for a six. With Curran out, India mopped up the final wicket too at 235 and thus snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

This match was the one that suddenly ignited hopes in the minds of Indian cricket followers. For the first time ever, we could entertain hopes of qualifying for the semifinals if India could somehow win their last remaining group match against Australia. India had two defeats in group matches, whereas Australia had three (two against West Indies and one against Zimbabwe). So the last group match between India and Australia was going to be very important.

It was this match from which many Indians began to follow the world cup with heightened expectations. That was certainly the case for me.

That day was 20 June 1983. It was my birthday. As was the tradition the birthday boy would arrange for jalebi and he would be given his birthday greeting by throwing him up in the air. My birthday being celebrated thus in the evening, it was time for us to follow the India vs Australia match with eager anticipation. India in the first innings had reached a so so total of 248. It was an achievable target for Australia. India hopes lay in picking some quick wickets.

The matches were followed on transistor radios. Every one had transistor radios, but gregarious creatures that hostel dwellers were, they would gather up around one transistor and listened to the commentary gathered around that one transister belonging to one person. In our case, that transistor belonged to Anupam Sharma, one year senior to us. I vividly remember a few of us (from his batch as well as juniors like me) gathering in his room, and listening to the commentary of the second innings in the India vs Australia match. Trevor Chappel, who had single handedly crushed India in the first match was fortunately dismissed cheaply. Australia 3 for one. But then the second wicket partnership steadied the ship. 46/1. Easy Australia win coming up, this was the despairing thought crossing our mind.

Then much against the run of play,  the second wicket falls. Australia 46/2. We all celebrated the fall of the wicket and braced for a long lull before the fall of next wicket. But soon enough, the third wicket fell, then the fourth, then the fifth. Ausralia, from 46 for one were reduced to 52/ 5. It was Roger Binny, who did the damage, claiming three wickets in no time. It was too good to be true, but Alan Border was still around.

But Indian bowlers kept claiming wickets at the other end. It was 69/6 then 79/7. Some people may have been reminded of the fact that India too were placed at that position in their previous match against Zimbabwe. The eight wicket threatened to do that. But it was at the score of 116 that the eight wicket fell (Lawson). After some more resistance, Australia lost their ninth wicket at 129 (Alan Border) followed by Geoff Thomson at the same total. Australia were bowled out for 129. India won by a huge margin of 118 runs and they stormed into the semi final, qualifying as the second team behind West Indies.

It was for the first time that India qualified for the semi final. The qualifiers from the other group were England and Pakistan. England topped their group (group A), winning five matches out of six. Their only defeat was a narrow 2 wickets defeat against New Zealand. They batted first twice and they scored 300 plus totals on two out of three occasion. They chased thrice and won these three matches by eight, seven, and nine wickets. They had a net run rate of 4.671. The mighty West Indies topped Group A with five wins as well. They batted first twice and failed to reach 300 even once. They chased on four occasions, and won three of these matches with ease, by 8, 7 and ten wickets. West Indies had a net run rate of “just” 4.308. The other qualifier from Group A was Pakistan, that tied on points with New Zealand but qualified on better run rate.

It is easy to guess that England were overwhelming favorites in the semi finals. Under normal circumstances they would have hoped to play against Australia, but they got to play India. They must have felt like it was a walk in the park in the semi final.

England indeed started well against India. Their batting line up boasted of names like Greame Fowler, Chris Tavare , David Gower, Allan Lamb, Mike Gatting and Ian Botham. They were 69 for no loss at one stage which was easily their best opening partnership while batting first. They would have expected to notch another 300 plus total. They lost their first wicket for 69, when Chris Tavare was caught behind off Binny. Then wickets began to fall at regular intervals. From 69/0 , they were reduced to 160/6. There was no heroic rearguard action from the tail, and England were bowled out for 213.

The target was not much, but could India do it ? Out of the four Indian wins in the group stages, three were while defending totals. The only time they won by chasing was against Zimbabwe when they chased a lowly total of 155. The total of 213 against England was a way bigger target and that too in the high pressure match that the semifinal was.

We, listening to the commentary on Radio were tense. India started well and were 46 for no loss. But soon enough both openers were dismissed and the total became 50/2. Mohinder Amarnath and Yashpal Sharma were at the crease. It appeared to us that Mohinder Amarnath and Yashpal Sharma were playing a test match. That is how slow they batted. 72 runs were needed and the asking rate was getting stiff. When Mohinder Amarnath departed, the score was 142. Some of us listening to the commentary felt that Mohinder Amarnath’s dismissal was a blessing in disguise. It was then that Sandip Patil, the next batsman in played in the fashion he was so well known in Indian domestic circle. He thrashed the English bowling all around and scored 51 from only 32 deliveries. It reminded us that it was just one year ago that Patil had hit Willis for six fours in one over in a test match against England in England just the previous year, reaching from 80 to 104 in one over.

So, India defeated England, bearded the English lion in its own den, so to say, and reached the final.

In the other semifinal. Pakistan, batting first scored 184. This target was easily chased by West Indies. They won by eight wickets. Viv Richards was unbeaten on 80.

So, it was West Indies vs India final. India were put into bat by West Indies. Indian batsmen struggled and they were all out for 183. They scored one run less than what Pakistan had scored against West Indies in the semi finals.

It was Sunday, 25 June 1983. We in our hostel had our dinner and the customary after dinner walk towards the golf ground. West Indies had begun their chase by then and had lost an early first wicket, in the form of Gordon Greenidge. But that only brought to the crease Vivian Richards the most destructive batsman in the world in all formats. He was hitting boundaries at will, when we went for our after dinner walk. When we were entering the hostel gate after finishing the walk, we heard a roar and ran to the person with the transistor. We came to know that the dangerous Richards had just been dismissed, caught Kapil Dev bowled Madan Lal. It was a great sigh of relief, but then we realized that the next man in was Clive Lloyd. His batting record against India was better than even Richards. But soon enough, Larry Gomes departed, Clive Lloyd (limping) departed and even Bacchus departed. West Indies, from being 50-1, found themselves at 77/6. Now it was up to the lower order batsmen. The target was not big, so it was not beyond the ability of West Indian tail. The seventh wicket partnership between Dujon and Marshall began to flourish, and began to gave headaches to Indian side. Come to think of it, Indian bowling consisted mostly of military medium bowlers. Tail enders traditionally bat better against such bowlers. Just when Indian fans are becoming desperate and frustrated, Kapil Dev handed the ball to Mohinder Amarnath. It was a desperate throw of the dice. Mohinder Amarnath got the breakthrough, by clean bowling Dujon. Marshall too followed caught by Gavaskar off Mohinder. Kapil Dev dismissed the ninth wicket by trapping Andy Roberts LBW. The last wicket partnership wagged a bit and then Mohinder Amarnath got one of his trademark deceptive inswinging delivery to beat Garner’s bat. The umpire readily upheld the appeal of LBW. West Indies were bowled out for 140. India had achieved the most improbable feat! They had defeated the undisputed world champions and had lifted the World Cup against all odds. India were 66-1 in betting circles before the world cup started. Those who were foolish enough to bet on India laughed all the way to the bank.

If someone was to dethrone West Indians from their lofty pedestal, then India was the last team that anyone would have thought of as the likely candidate, but it was indeed India that had done it !

The movie brought back all those happy memories. The fact that the movie was in 3 D made it feel like I was watching the matches on the ground. That is how realistic it appeared on 3 D.

This tournament was not just a world cup cricket title for India. It was far far far bigger than that. It changed the game of cricket for ever. West Indies won the title twice earlier and that hardly changed much, but this title win, which was a fluke win changed the game of cricket itself for ever. And that was mainly because Indians unlike West Indians, had the ability to take the win to the next level. Indians began to believe in themselves. Not just Indian cricketers but sportsmen in other sports as well. Till then, there was no Chess Grandmaster in India. A few years later, we had our first Chess Grandmaster in India (Vishwanathan Anand). He changed Indian chess the way this 1983 Cricket title win changed Indian cricket. Today India is in the top four among chess playing nations (all nations in the world play chess).

Cricket administration in India, alongwith Indian industry, began to assert themselves. The next world cup was held in Indian subcontinent and it was sponsored by Reliance, then an up and coming industrial house, and today a mega Indian business house.

By 1990s, BCCI had started to have a say in the running of ICC. Today BCCI in fact can be said to run world cricket economy. Today 70 % of revenue that ICC gets is from the Indian market, which ICC then distributes among its member countries. So India is helping run cricket in other countries around the world. All this was made possible because of that one freak and fluke 1983 world cup title win! Fluke it may have been, but what happened in India after that win had nothing to do with fluke. It had much to do with a new found self belief among Indians (at least among some Indians, if not all).

When India does something, it influences other countries in the neighborhood. These neighborhood countries may not admit it but they are influenced by what India does. We can see that in cricket. Cricket got a big fillip not only in India but also in neighboring countries, Pakistan won the world cup in 1992 and Sri Lanka in 1996. Bangladesh too started playing cricket seriously. Afghanistan and Nepal too followed.

If one thinks that Indian influence on its neighbors is overrated, then please realize that hockey is the national game in India and Pakistan. Till 1970s, India vs Pakistan hockey matches received same attention as India vs Pakistan cricket matches enjoy today. But India lost interest in its hockey. Today India plays hockey with Pakistan and nobody takes notice of these matches. Same is going to happen to cricket in the neighborhood of India if India stops taking interest in cricket. Even in cricket, the neighbors of India cannot go far in a sport without the support of India. As an example, cricket was included in Asian games but BCCI was not interested and it did not send its teams to Asian games. After two Asian games, cricket got dropped from Asian games. It shows that Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh cricket board on their own have negligible say even at Asian games level.

To cut a long discussion short, this 1983 World Cup title view had changed not just Indian cricket, but World cricket. It has not just changed Indian cricket, it has changed the outlook of Indian sportsmen playing other sports as well. Moreover, it had changed the outlook of Indians and also Indian industry. It was quite some transformation in the collective national psyche of India. And for that we have to say a big thank you to the Indian cricket team that brought home the 1983 world cup.

I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. The last time I enjoyed a movie like this was ‘Don’ (1978). This movie ’83’ (2021) is a movie that I can watch as many times as I can get an opportunity. I hope such opportunities come soon. In fact I am hoping to get an opportunity to watch this movie with my hostel mates with whom we followed that world cup 38 years ago. Two of my batch mates and one senior are at present posted with me in Gorakhpur. The senior whose transistor brought us the commentary of those matches is today posted as General Manager in the adjacent zone. Such great memories. Reliving those fond memories is simply priceless. The movie affords us that opportunity.

I did some research to find out who plays whom. It is interesting to note that Sandeep Patil’s role is played by his son Chirag Patil. Likewise Late Malcolm Marshall’s role is played by his son, Mali Marshall. Carl Greenidge played the role of his father Gordon Greenidge. Clive Lloyd’s son also played a role. He was 6’8″ tall, so he was signed up to play Joe Garner (6’9″). Shivnaraine Chanderpaul’s son Tej Narayan Chanderpaul was signed up to play Larry Gomes. Mohinder Amarnath, man of the match in the final, played the role of his father late Lala Amarnath. 🙂 Nina Gupta, whose dalliance with Viv Richards is well known, plays Kapildev’s mother. 🙂

Today is 11th December’2021 and its still thirteen days’ wait for the release of the movie ‘83’ on the big screen. I am eagerly waiting to watch this movie on its very first day and if possible, I will be watching its ‘first show’ whether it’s a morning or noon show 😊

In fact, I am waiting for this movie for more than a year since it was originally planned for a theatrical release in April’2020. However due to ‘Corona Pandemic’ its release kept getting postponing to new dates and nfinally it will be released on 24th December2021.

The year 1983 has been an important year of my life when I appeared for my tenth standard board exams in March-April 1983, and we were waiting for the results to be declared in June 1983.
Secondly it was the most memorable year for us- cricket loving and cricket playing boys- as India emerged victorious in the ‘1983’ cricket world cup.

I got to watch the teaser of this movie around 29th November 2021, and the teaser mentioned that the official trailer of the movie would be released on 30th November’2021. So, I was eagerly waiting to watch the ‘trailer’ because the teaser itself was very interesting.

On 30th November I watched the trailer of this movie, and I was lost in nostalgia of this famous win of Indian Cricket Team. Since then, I have been regularly watching the trailer (in Hindi and other languages) twice or thrice daily.

On 6th December2021 this song ‘lehraa do’ from this movie was released on YT and it gives me goose bumps everytime I watch it. I am thrilled and now impatiently waiting for the release of this movie in theatres. I am sure I am going to enjoy it on the big screen, with emotions and memories playing in the ‘flashback’ in my mind.

One week to go for ‘83’ to release in theatres. As said earlier I am already very excited to watch this movie on big screen. For the last few days I have been watching its trailer daily . On the last Sunday I watched the trailer and its song ‘lehraa do’ again on my TV at home (earlier I was watching it on the laptop 😊).

Due to my regular clicking to this movie trailer and other associated visuals of the 1983 world cup, the suggestions appearing on YT are also filled with the videos of the interviews of the real heroes of the 1983 cup, their appearances on TV show, there appearances on the launch of the movie, its poster, and similar things.

Other than the trailer of this movie ‘83’ what I watched during the recent days is the highlights of the final match of ‘world cricket cup 1983’, and highlights of the semifinal between India and England.

I repeatedly watched the famous catch of Vivian Richards by Kapil Dev in the finals.

TV had not arrived in our colony when India won the world cup in 1983. We had to listen to the commentary on Radio only. However, the ‘video parlors’ had come up in the nearest city – Akola. The operators arranged the video of the finals, after India’s famous win, for a ticket of Rs. 10/- with a complimentary cold drink.

I recall that the print of the video was not good or it may have been a copied version. But whatever was available was enough for us to enjoy the win. (My board exam results were already declared on 17th June, and I had passed in first class with 72% marks only. And now I was applying for polytechnic courses and filling up forms and submitting them. This gave me chance of visiting the city frequently. Slowly I was more on watching movies in theatres and video parlors. 😊 )

Coming back to cricket again, I was discussing about the memories of ‘world cup 1983’. As mentioned earlier, we (me and group of friends) enjoyed all the matches while listening to the commentary on Radio/Transistors.

I could not forget how I walked alone in the ground near my house with my transistor to listen to the commentary of the India-Zimbabwe match of 18th June’1983.

I recall that I had gone to the city Akola on this day of 18th June’1983. I no longer recall the purpose of that visit.

I came back from Akola by train to Paras. Reaching there I could not get any transport and decided to go home by walking. On the way I was asking friends (who had their homes on the way) the score of the match which was played between India and Zimbabwe.

I was shocked to know that India had already lost four wickets. By the time I reached home and grabbed the control of the transistor. The commentary with lot of disturbance in the network, informed me that India had lost five wickets.

In order to get better reception, I took the transistor to open field near our house where we used to play cricket. By this time Kapil Dev had started scoring runs and I was holding the transistor closer to my ears not to miss the exciting commentary of that ‘famous match’.
When I try to recollect, I can not remember more than this (now my memory is also deteriorating day by day I think 😊)

My guess is that the story of this match must be the ‘high-point’ of this movie, or it could be more than that. We all are aware that no camera team was available that day at the Royal Tunbridge Wells stadium to cover the visuals of this match. So, the video of this match is not available. (However, some photographs (very few) are said to be available now).

As a cricket fan of that era what more could we ask for than a ‘complete movie’ on this historic India win where Kapil Dev led the team to this triumph.

The eager wait is finally over. We are going to enjoy the ‘true story’ on the bigger screens on the coming 24th december 2021. Watching the movie-trailers, and other promos almost daily, has put me in full ‘83’ mode now … Other than this I also enjoyed a TV show/s where all the members of this team come together and shared the anecdotes of the tournament.
Moreover, there is one clip of the launch of the poster of the movie in Chennai and here we have Kapil Dev, Srikkanth, Kamal Hasan, other promoters of the movie and all the team member actors 😊

I had forgotten many statistics of this tournament for India’s matches so I revisited them on wiki-pages and revived the nostalgia associated with those beautiful days.

At this point we will have a brief look on India’s journey in this tournament.

One thing I specially want to mention here is about the atmosphere at the night of 25th June’1983. Everybody at home and in the neighborhood were all excited and celebrating the win. I went to sleep to rise as early as possible the next day. And while the evening of 25th June’1983 was great for all, the morning of 26th June’1983 was not less than that. There were more celebrations. All the newspapers were carrying the news of India’s historic win.

Our group of cricket-playing boys had gathered and took a round of the whole colony decorating the roads and walls of common places like club etc. we were ‘shouting’ 😊 slogans of India’s win and roaming around with joy. That was a very ‘special Sunday’ for all Indians.

At this point I would like to reproduce a brief from the ‘Moments of History’ on completion of India’s 64 years of freedom on August 15th, 2011. This was shared to me by my Guruji on mail. The winning of 1983 world cup is mentioned as below in the ‘visual chronology of post-Independent India-moments that stood out in each year of the nation’s triumphant, troubled history’ –

1983 – Kapil’s Devils go from underdogs to top dogs

Seen as underdogs going into the tournament with no hopes of clearing the league matches, the Kapil Dev-led Indian cricket team triumphed over all odds, including wagers of 100-1 in favour of the Windies in the finals of the World Cup. With a modest score of 183 to defend, the match, and subsequently the trophy, belonged to the Indian medium-pacers. When Balwinder Singh Sandhu swung the ball, Gordon Greenidge had no other choice but to edge it, helping India to its first wicket. WI’s swashbuckling batsmen had a rather meek task of adding runs to the scoreboard in little trickles, but some smart bowling, swift fielding and superlative catches by the Indian team ensured that the Cup belonged to India and India alone on that unforgettable day of June 25, 1983.

The online advance bookings for the movie ‘83’ has started from today. As I mentioned earlier, I am going to book tickets for first day first show. The earliest show starts at 08:00 in the morning. And next is 08:15 am and 08:30 am at different locations. I should be able to catch the 08:30 show. 😊

Earlier I had planned that my younger daughter and I could be going to watch this movie as other members would be busy. But now my wife is also insisting to watch the first day – first show with me 😊. Watching the trailers of the movie have triggered her interest to watch this movie with me 😊

One slight change – now my elder daughter will be joining us in watching this movie. One family friend from her office will also join us. My younger daughter will not be able to come as she has coaching assignment that day. Maybe she will join me in my repeat watch of this movie. 😊

Meanwhile the movie’s promotional video was shown at ‘Burj Khalifa- UAE’ on 16.12.2021 evening.

As in the news now, the movie has been screened for special invites and dignitaries. Everybody is praising the director of this movie Kabir Khan and main actor Ranveer Singh. The transformation of the actors into the ‘83’ players and their nuanced performances have been appreciated by all ‘reviews’ so far.

Also, the movie is carrying many things not known to us e.g., what was going in the minds of the players then in 1983, what personal problems they faced, and how they kept playing against all odds to win the cup.

Regarding the players of this 1983 Team, I would just quote here what Kapil Paa ji has said about his teammates on TV when the movie was launched.
“inko handle karnaa aasaan nahin tha. Ye bade character hain, aap ke liye bahot mushkil kaam honewaala hai aise character dhoondhne India mein. Aap ko nahin mil sakte, aap koshish kar sakte hain, par mil nahin sakte”

I guess Kapil Dev is saying this to the director of this movie Kabir Khan when they launched this movie four years back.

I remember the book which I had read in 2015-16 wherein Balwinder Singh Sandhu is the co-author of the book. This book is ‘The Devil’s Pack’. I would suggest that all cricket lovers of that era and current era should read this book.

Hullo Atuldom

A few phrases and idioms are coming to my mind as I sit to write this post.

“Chip off the old block” meaning “jaisa baap waisa beta”. I am talking of an actor who is representing Gen”X” of the family of entertainers, following in the footsteps of his father, uncles, grandfather, granduncles, great grandfather and great great grandfather. In fact a few of his cousins are also active in carrying the family flag of entertaining the country with their acting talents. This is one talented clan.

But I will not use the public’s favorite word ‘Nepotism’ here because being a star son will only help you get an entry to the producers’ and production house’s offices. They may be nice to you and offer you a role too but after that it is purely the business that the film generates and how much that the audience loves you that decides which direction your career goes. We can name any number of actors whose careers have fallen by the roadside for want of success.

Coming back to the “chip of the old block” that I started the post with, he started out as an assistant to Sanjay Leela Bhansali when he made “Black” (2005). Sanjay Leela Bhansali also gave him his debut film “Saawariya” in 2007 for which the music director was Monty Sharma, another person trying his hand at carrying the family flag- he is Pyarelal Sharma’s nephew.

We are here wishing Ranbir Kapoor on his 38th birthday. He is as versatile as any other of his family in emoting, comedy, dance and every aspect of acting. He has had a fair bit of successful movies and he was simply amazing in the comic climax at the villain’s den in the movie “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Dastaan”. He was able to stay in step with Madhuri in the “ghagra” song. He is the recipient of awards for various categories. He was fortunate to have worked with his parents in “Besharam” and also his granduncle in “Rockstar”.

I am a little confused as to which will be an appropriate song to go with this post, because the songs in his movies had good lyrics, choreography and were all eye-pleasing. I am going to settle for a song from “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani” which has lyrics by Irshad Kamil and music by Pritam Chakraborty. The movie was a remake of a 2005 Telugu hit and got Ranbir a critics award of best actor. Rajkumar Santoshi was the director and Katrina Kaif, Upen Patel, Darshan Jariwal, Smita Jaykar, Govind Namdeo and Zakir Hussain as the don who has a gang that cannot do anything right. Ranbir and Katrina played characters that have a speech problem every time they get emotional.

I find the names of singers who are new to me – Naresh, Atif Aslam, Soham Chakraborty, Kailash Kher (this one I have heard for some time now) and Ashish Pandit. This is an all-male song.

There are a few dates that every Indian knows by heart. For instance. Independence day (15 august), Republic day (26 january) and Mahatma Gandhi birth anniversary (2 october). India observes official holidays on these days.

There are some more important days in the history of India and most of them have to do with birth / death anniversaries of eminent persons. These dates are mostly associated with Indian freedom struggle followed by birth pangs of Independence.

The newly independent India was a desperately poor, undernourised, illiterate nation, lying in utter disarray and confusion. There were a few famous foreigners who were convnced that India as a nation was going to be shortlived.

The first few decades of independent India were very difficult. Indians had low self esteem and they had little to show for at the world level in any sphere.

Sports was considered a luxury that the poor nation could not afford. It was popularly believed that one who studied moved ahead in life whereas one who devoted time to sports was a slacker who would be a failure in his future life. -“Padhoge likhoge banoge nawaab Kheloge koodoge hoge kharaab”- it was a very popular saying in Hindi. There is even a song in a Hindi movie containing his idiom.

India had very few sporting achievements. Indians celebrated those few and far between sporting achievements quite hard. India was a powerhouse in Hockey and they used to win gold medals in Olympics continuously till 1956 Olympics. After that they began to get challenged, first by newly independent Pakistan (who won the gold in 1960 Olympics defeating India) and then by Europe and the downfall of Indian hockey began. 1964 Olympics gold and 1975 World cup title were exceptions rather than rule. After 1975, India never won any major international Hockey tournament.

India was no good in any other sports.

Cricket was very popular in India though this popularity did not translate into excellence. Cricket was popular among the “middle” class Indians. Majority of Indians considered themselves as “Middle” class those days. The reason why cricket was popular among “middle” class public had to to with its dress. While one needed to wear shorts to play other games which was considered infra dig by “middle” class Indians, cricket was played while wearing full pants, and so one felt like a sahab rather than a lowly individual while playing cricket. It was a “saala main to saahab ban gaya” kind of feeling for Indians who took to cricket.

Till mid 1970s, longer version of cricket, played in white dress, was the only form of cricket. Despite the popularity of cricket in India, Indian cricketers, with some honourable exceptions, were by and large quite mediocre at international level. The top players of England would not even tour India, and that gave India the opportunity to defeat a depleted English team in 1951-52, which was the first test win for India in test cricket. For next two decades, Indian registered some infrequent test wins, mostly against weak and / or new comer teams, viz Pakistan and new Zealand.

1971 to 1973 was a surprising purple patch for India when they managed to win three test series in a row, against West Indies in 1971, against England in 1971, and in home series against England during 1972-73. But this freak run against depleted sides was too good to last and India got soundly thrashed in their next test series against England in England during 1974.

During that disastrous tour, India played two limited overs match against England and lost tamely.

The first Limited overs world cup was played in England in 1975. Indian public as well as cricketers had no clue about the rules of the game. That was demonstrated rather dramatically during the opening match of that world cup. England piled on 334/ 4 in 60 overs. India in reply, crawled to 132/ 3. Gavaskar, opening the innings, scored 36 runs and remained not out ! He was perhaps trying to play out the overs and draw the match ! The fact that playing out overs and not scoring runs did not avoid defeat, unlike in test matches was not known to many.

In that world cup, India lost every match, except one which they played against a rag tag team of expatriates who represented a team called “East Africa”. East Africa was a collection of club level players from various African nations. India was able to record their only victory of the world cup against this team.

India did even worse in the next world cup in 1979. this time they lost all the matches. Their most humiliating defeat was against Sri Lanka, who at that time were an associate team, they were not yet a test team.

When the third world cup was held in England in 1983, then it was being considered yet another cakewalk for West indies, who had won both the world cups and whose team boasted of strong batting line up and a fearsome pace bowling quartet. They were so strong that other teams would write off their chances against West Indies and would concentrate on winning other matches.

Indian public as well as players were sure that it would be yet another forgettable world cup for them. Some cricketers had already planned to go visit USA on a sight seeing tour after the group stage matches.

This world cup had two groups of four teams each. In each group, the teams played each other twice. The top two teams qualified for the semi finals.

The first group match that India played was against West Indies ! Because of rain interruptions, this match was played over two days. India batting first scored a so so total of 262/8. Yashpal Sharma, with 89 runs, held the innings together where the second highest score was only 36 runs by Sandip Patil. West Indies, after a decent start, suddenly had a middle order collapse against the dibbly dobbly military medium bowling attack of Sandhu, Madanlal and Roger Binny who claimed 5 wickets among themselves. At 130/8 , West Indies were in big trouble, but their tail then began to wag valiantly. Just when it appeared like the tail were taking West Indies to a famous fighting win, Ravi Shashtri struck to claim the two vital tailender wickets. West Indies were bowled out for 228 ! It was a major upset. It was the first ever world cup defeat for West Indies, It was the first ever win for India against a test side (only the second win for them in world cup).

The next match for India was against Zimbabwe, an associate team, and India won comfortably.

Then normal world cup service seemed to resume for India. They lost their next two matches tamely, by 162 runs (against Australia) and 66 runs (against West Indies).

After two wins and two losses, India played Zimbabwe again. While batting first, India were in dire straits at 17/5. Overconfidence by the entire batting line up plus good use of swinging and bouncy conditions by Zimbabwean bowlers had brought India on its knees. The entire top order, viz Gavaskar (0) , Srikkanth (0) , Mohinder Amarnath (5), Sandeep Patil (1) and Yashpal Sharma (9) were blown away. Only bowlers and wicktkeeper were left, who were not known for any great batting feats at international level.

Kapildev (the captain) and Roger Binny took the score to 77, when Binny fell for a gritty 22. Next man Shashtri fell for one, and India was 78/ 7 ! Next man in was Madanlal, he scored 17 and fell when the score was 140.

At 140/8, it appeared as if India was going to maintain its past record of losing to an associate team in the world cup. Incidentally, Zimbabwe had already defeated Australia in this world cup in their very first world cup match.

Kirmani, the wicket keeper was definitely the last hope because Sandhu after him was a perfect rabbit with the bat. Kirmani held his end intact and concentrated on protecting his wicket. He faced 56 balls and scored 24 not out.

All this while, Kapildev was going alone sedately. Coming in at 9/4, he saw off the rampaging opening bowers Rawson and Curran, who bowled bulk of their quota of overs in their opening spell.

After initial jitters, Kapildev began to open up. He had already reached into late 70s when the eighth wicket fell for 140. The eight batsmen who fell had contributed just 55 runs among themselves.

After the fall of eighth wicket, Kapildev started to throw his bat around. The boundary was short on one side and longer on the other, but most Kapildev sixes (six of them) were straight sixes over long on boundary where the boundary was long. Kapildev struck six sixes and 16 fours. When Rawson and Curran returned to finish off their balance quota of overs, they were pulverised, being struck at over ten runs per over.

Kapildev did not give any real chances. He chanced his arms and his hits fell on no man’s land. It was Kapildev’s day out on that day of 18 june 1983.

India reached a respectable looking 266/ 8, a total that looked impossible for most parts of the innings.

While chasing, Zimbabwe were off to a decent start. their first wicket fell at 44, but after that, Indian dibbly dobbly trundlers (Sandhu, Madanlal, Binny and Mohinder Amarnath) did all the damage, with Kapildev taking the final wicket. India had won by 31 runs. It was not a case of India getting out of jail, rather it was like India escaping from the gallows !

Suddenly, India, who looked like going home, were in the reckoning for a semi final spot. They were second in the group with 12 points behind West Indies. Final group match of India was with Australia who were third in the group with 8 points and they too had a chance to pip Indians to the post by defeating india by a decent margin and going through on equal points but better run rate.

This India vs Australia match was a virtual quarter final. India batting first scored what looked like a poorish total of 247 all out in 55. 5 overs.

While chasing, Australia lost their first wicket cheaply with the score on 3. It was the prized wicket of Trevor Chappel who was man of the match in their previous encounter in the tournament. But the second wicket began to score runs and started to look threatening. Just when I and my hostel mates began to despair, the second wicket fell at 46, then the third at 48, fourth at 52, fifth at 52, sixth at 67 etc etc. The trundling trio of Sandhu (2 wickets), Madanlal (4 wickets) and Binny (4 wickets) skittled Australia out for 129 and took India to semifinal. It was something that was looking out of question just two days back.

The day when India stormed into the semi final was 20 june 1983. I was in my hostel where it was a tradition that birthday boy of the day would treat entire hostel with Mithai. That day happened to be my birthday, and the mithai celebration turned out to be quite sweet and memorable for all concerned.

The memory of semi final was a blur. Most Indian wins (except one) came when India batted first. But this time India bowled first and restricted England to 213. India concentrated to keeping wickets in hand. India emerged a comfortable winner in the end in a chase that they executed well, though they gave anxious moments to Indian fans, apparently showing no urgency to score quickly in the middle overs.

Three matches in five days, and three wins. India were in the final of the world cup !

Three days later, it was another sunday. The date was 25 june 1983. The day of the final.

Those were the days when only Delhi and perhaps Bombay had TV. Most part of India only had Radio. Listening to cricket match commentary in a hostel with lots of like minded hostelmates was quite an experience. Everyone had radios, but majority of people would throng together to listen to the commentary on one single radio. If I recall correctly, that used to be the radio of a person who was a cricket enthusiast and claimed to be related to Sharmila Tagore based on the resemblance of his teeth with that of Sharmila Tagore. 🙂

We listened to the commentary of Indian batting, but there was not much to cheer about. India kept losing wickets at regular intervals and India was bowled out for a paltry 183. Chasing 183 was no big deal for West Indies. They were set a similar target in the semifinal against Pakistan and they had romped home with ease, winning by eight wickets with 11.2 overs to spare.

The innings break coincided with our dinner break in the hostel. After dinner, people would traditionally go on an after dinner walk towards the golf course located in front of the hostel some half a km away. West Indies innings had started by then. India claimed an early wicket, but that only brought Viv Richards to the crease. He was going hammer and tongs at the Indian bowling. All of us were reconciled to the fact that it was going to be a one sided match, with west indies winning comfortably.

Then, against the run of play, we gathered that a wicket had fallen, and it was the wicket of Richards ! A big sigh of relief. But West Indies was not a one batsman team. they has a long and strong batting line up. Even their wicket keeper and tailenders could score runs. Moreover he target was not much. A few hefty blows from some batsman, and the match would be decided.

While listening to the commentary, more in hope than real expectation, we found the fourth and fifth wickets falling at the same score, and the wickets were that of Larry Gomes and Clive Lloyd. At 76/6 , Bacchus, another thorn in Indian flesh was gone. Both of them had scored big double centuries against india in India.

Dujon and Marshal gave anxious moments to Indian bowlers. Then Dujon fell to Mohinder Amarnath . 119 for 7 ! Then 8 for 124. Marshal gone, he too to Mohinder Amarnath.

Finally, West Indies resistance came to an end at 140. A 43 run victory for India. So the world had a new champion, an out rightly unexpected champion. If West Indies was to be dethroned, one would expect any team other than India to achieve it. But it turns out that it was the Indian David that slayed the West Indian Goliath.

West Indies had won the earlier two world cups. Their title wins did nothing much for world cricket. But this unexpected fluke win of India against all odds changed the game of cricket ! Indian interest in the game suddenly moved on to the next higher gear. So much so that Indians began to invest far more in cricket. The Indian industry, far smaller and modest then than what it is now, began to take much more interest in cricket. So much so that the world cup which was always held in England and always sponsored by Prudential Bank of England,, was held the next time in Indian subcontinent. This time it was sponsored by an up and coming Indian business house called Reliance ! In 1983, India was considered an also ran, but by 1987, India was a strong title contender ! It is another matter than India lost in the semifinal itself.

1983 win was a fluke no doubt. But he future results showed that Indian cricket had arrived at world stage after this fluke world cup win. Two years later, there was a World Championship of cricket in Australia. India, because of its defeat at home to England in 1984-85 was being considered as a no hoper. Kapildev, the world cup winner in 1983, had lost his captaincy and Gavaskar was made the captain for this WCC. Once again, defying all predictions, India won all their matches, remained undefeated and lifted the WCC title. So it was like Fluke title won 1983 was followed by its sequel, fluke title win II ! Later there would be some ODI tournament wins for India. India began to be counted among favourites in all subsequent world cups.

That is not all. Indians began to take interest in running the administration of ICC (international cricket council) which was till then a preserve of British stiff upper lip Lords who were running it in a manner that was hardly helping popularise the game. Indian businessman, such as Jagmohan Dalmia, took over the running of ICC, and improved the financial condition of ICC beyond all recognition. Today ICC is one of the richest sporting body. It is richer than most sporting bodies where Indians do not take interest. For instance, Rugby is a sport in which cricket playing nations like England, Australia and New Zealand take interest, but India does not. Result ! International body of Rugby earns far less than ICC.

Much of ICC riches (around 70 % of it) today comes from India. That is how much money Indian market contributes to world cricket. It is this Indian market that has made BCCI one of the richest sporting body of a country, richer than ICC in fact. Seeds of all these giant Oak trees were sown on this day 37 years ago, thanks to that miraculous fluke title win on 25 june 1983 !

25 june 1983 gave Indians immense self confidence that they too can do it. And as mentioned above, they used this win to advance their cricket. Cricket academies sprung up all over India, and some of them were by private companies. For instance, a pace academy came up in Madras, called MRF pace academy. Fans of other countries mocked it, but if today Indian pace attack is considered one of the best pace attacks, then remember, it is the result of three decades of investment on training of pace bowlers in different academies spread all over India. And that started only after this great fluke event that took place on 25 june 1983.

This win inspired not just India, but its neighbours too, who may not admit it openly but they look up to India and get inspired. Interest in cricket picked up in these nations too. Pakistan won the world cup in 1992 and Sri Lanka announced its arrival in cricket scene by unexpectedly winning the world cup in 1996. Three world cup title wins out of four between 1983 and 1996 ! All this was made possible because of that first title win in 1983 ! Even Bangladesh became a cricket crazy nation and started to play international cricket from 2000.

Other sports too benefited in India. Indian Sportsmen in other sports too began to have more self belief. One great example is that of Indian chess. Just like India was supposedly considered incapable to producing fast bowlers till 1970s, India was also considerd incapable of producing Chess grandmasters. Those days, India had just two international masters, that was all. AICF (All India Chess Federation) began to invest more in organising chess tournaments inviting strong chess players from abroad. India saw its first Grand master in 1987 in the form of Vishwanathan Anand in 1987. Later on, he became World Champon as well. He inspired whole lot of Indians to take up Chess. Today India has some 60 off Chess Grandmasters and based on average ELO raking of the top ten chess players in the world, India is among top four strongest chess playing nation in the world !

Likewise one can add the example of Indian Badminton too.

To mark this major major achievement of Indian sport in general and Indian cricket inparticular, here is a cricket song from “Ferrari Ki Sawaari”(2012). This film was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and directed by Rajesh Mapuskar for ‘Vinod Chopra films’. This movie had Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani, Ritvik Sahore, Seema Pahwa, Aakash Dabhade, Deepak Shirke, Paresh Rawal, Satyadeep Mishra, Achyut Potdar, Bhalchandra Kadam, Vijay Nikam, Nilesh Diwekar and others, with a special appearance by Vidhya Balan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala. He not only discovered this cricket song, he sent its lyrics to me specially to mark the occasion of Indian world cup win on 25 june 1983 ! He certainly keeps an eagle eye on important days in the annals of Indian history !

“Preetam” (1971) was produced and directed by Bhappie Sonie. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Leena Chandavarkar, Helen, Raj Mehra, Tiwari, Anwar Hussain, Manmohan, Siddhu, Malika, Urmila Bhatt, Raj Kishore, Ravikant, Daya Devi, Shyam, Dhanraj, Robert Slater, Birbal, Naaz, Dhumal, Mehmood etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Five songs from the movie have been covered in the past.

Here is the sixth and final song from “Preetam”(1971) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Manna Dey. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

The first song from the movie to appear in the blog was a Manna Dey song as well. Like that song, this song too is picturised on Mehmood. Here he is seen with Naaz. While commenting on that song, I had observed that

Listening to the song, it is clear that the dance and music is inspired from “Gumnaam” (1965) and the lyrics are somewhat inspired from “Padosan” (1968). Based on the above, I guessed that the music director must be Shankar Jaikishan and the lyricist must be Rajinder Krishan. On checking up, I was proved right !

The above observations apply on this song as well. 🙂

In the start of the song, there are some words that I guess are in Tamil. I request our knowledgeable readers to help correct those lyrics wherever applicable.

Atul Song-A-Day 15K Song Milestone Celebrations – 12

Cannot believe that we have reached the milestone of 15k on the blog. Just seems like yesterday that we were all waiting with bated breath to reach the 10k milestone. How time flies, and how consistent and persistent all of you have been. No words to express each one of your dedication, passion and labour of love.

What can one say about this haven of ours that has not been said before? For someone like me who has been like a pardesi in some ways (not being active as all the regulars), it is so heartening when all of you still reach out and ask how things are with me and family.

Team ASAD we could equate with the CSK team in IPL, consistent, champions and liked by one and all. Needless to say, we have calm, composed leaders to lead us too 🙂 .

It does feel guilty that our Yippeeee! team could not continue our work after a point of time, and yet there is hope that we would get back to it one day soon and try really hard to get to the ever moving target of the blog :).

These days, the only place I get to listen to songs is the car, and most of the times, it is what my daughter decides to play that we get to listen to. One of the recent numbers that is pretty much on repeat in her current playlist is a lovely song from the upcoming movie that most people are looking forward to called ‘Kalank’.

The song has been picturised so well, and is even better thanks to two amazingly talented actors, Madhuri Dixit and Alia Bhatt. The voice for these two are the versatile Shreya Ghoshal and Vaishali Mhade. For some reason, when you listen to this song multiple times, reminds us of songs sung by the Mangeshkar sisters (the names of the songs do not come to mind).

Though Pritam is accused many a time to blatantly copy songs for his tracks in movies, he does come up with some brilliant numbers that forces you to play them in a loop.

I know I have not done justice to this article celebrating the 15k milestone of the blog, nor the song featured here, but I am hoping the article would be the last thing on your mind after you listen to this beautiful number which has such an amazing tempo and so well rendered.

Wishing Atul ji, Sudhir ji, Arun ji, Khyati Ben, Raja ji and the entire paltan and followers of the blog, a very big Congratulations! This is no mean achievement, and I am sure for the celebration we can expect some amazing trivia and posts to reach even more unique milestones with this one big milestone. Colorful greetings to all readers and friends. May this festival of colors, bring happiness and good health, to yourself, and to everyone you know. 🙂  May these colors multiply and spread good cheer across every day in the calendar.

On this blog, we are celebrating the eleventh iteration of this festival. Statistics is one thing – apart from that, the wonderful fact is that the songs of Holi in Hindi films, seem like a supply with no end. Of course yes, when the films and their directors continue to add more songs celebrating this festival every year.

I bring to your attention, this wonderfully fabulous song of the spirit of Holi, from a really very recent film – ‘Ye Jawaani Hai Deewaani’ from 2013. This film was one of the most successful films of that year, and I am sure you must be aware of it, even though it is possible that your tastes and preferences are rooted in the 1940s and 50s which is the gold standard for melody and music in Hindi films. However, that does not mean that music of the decades after the golden . . . – well it does deserve credit. It does catch your attention, and the music and songs still grow into your mind to become darling memories.

Although I have myself not been paying much attention and time to the music of the current years. But quite decidedly, along comes a film with a blast of music that forcefully captures your attention, and insists on becoming part of your list of favorites. Something quite of this sort happened with this 2013 film, for me. And it started very much with this song.

After a long time, I must say, that I have encountered a song of this festival, that simply takes your breath away. The spirit of celebration, and all the emotions that uniquely make this festival what it is – is not so totally and carefully represented every time. But surely, this song does it.

There is color, lots and lots of it.
There is water – it starts off with that.
There is cheer – for every person who is part of this song, and everyone else who may be listening and enjoying it.
There is music – yes of course.
There is dancing – goodness you must be kidding.
There is ‘bhaang’, and there is noise.
There is a large dipping pool – nay, a large dunking pool.
Oh yes, there is “छेड़ छाड़” – chhed chhaad, there is “ज़ोर ज़बरदस्ती” – zor zabardasti.
There are fair maidens running away to save themselves from being smothered with color and water.
And there are insistent and forceful young charmers who will not take ‘no’ for an answer. Or rather they do not even care what the answer is – they will force the color into your face and hair. They will chase you, and run you down, and cuddle you – and they will be more insistent, the more resistance one puts up.
There are drums.
There is singing – very loud, yes.
There is nonsense lyrics – like “लट्टू पड़ोसन की भाभी हो गई” – lattu padosan ki bhabhi ho gayi.
There are meaningful verses – “ज़ुल्मी ये हाजिर जवाबी हो गई. . .” – zulmi ye haazir jawaabi ho gai.
There is “नोक झोंक” – nok-jhonk – that is very verbal and very physical too.
There is humor, and there is suggestive propositioning – like “अरमानों में बेहिसाबी हो गई” – armaanon mein behisaabi ho gai.
And there is flights of fancy.
And there is uncharacteristic expressions of festivity from unexpected quarters
And there is a glimmer of surprised realizations.
The matters of heart, unexpressed, are just beneath the surface sheen.
And of course there is a shock of unexpected and amazing realizations – yes, this could surely be it.
There is joy of shared happinesses.
There is a loud cheer of good spirit.
And everything, each and every one of these ingredients put together into the mix to convince you – yayyy, it is Holi – get colored, and get wet, very wet.

Amazing, simply and truly amazing – after a long time, comes along a new sound that astonishes the mind with the honesty with which the true spirit of the festival is so sweetly captured. Needless to say it – but yes, I am quite truly floored.

I have not yet seen the complete film. I got introduced to the songs of this film over the past many months. Especially this Holi song was forcefully dumped into my notice just about a year ago, yes around the last iteration of this celebration. Enthused as I was, I could not make and present a post in time for the festival; now coming around to it after a wait of a full year. Even with this passage of time, the charm of this song has not diminished even one bit. I simply do not seem to be getting enough of this song. 🙂

The lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and the music is by Preetam. Singing voices are of Vishal Dadlani and Shalmali Kholgade. On screen, the song is performed by Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapoor and a ton of dancers. Deepika and Ranbir are so truly convincing in the complete free form enjoyment in this song. The movie makes its debut on our blog with this song.

Wishing a grand celebration of this festival today, to all friends and readers. Go out, get doused in colors, make up some fun lyrics – like “लट्टू पड़ोसन की भाभी हो गई” types, and sing it out at the top of the voice. It does not matter – it is Holi. Just down one glass of bhang and then blame it for everything. 😀 😀 😀

We in this blog have covered lots of HFM from all eras. While doing that, we have had lots of discussions on Hindi movies as well.

Yesterday night, and early morning today, I was thinking about the differences between Indian music and Western music, and I realised that there is considerable technical and conceptual differences between the two and the difference between the two kinds of music is something that very few people are aware of. I realised that the “western” music that we in India have brought in is not really “western” music as it is in the west. We have failed to import the spirit of western music. We have ended up introducing western instruments in India but we have failed to tap the vast richness of western music. We have ended up largely becoming a frog in the well, deluding ourselves that our music is older and richer and all that vis a vis western music, whereas the real facts are altogether different. It is a very interesting (at least to me) topic and a rather vast and somewhat involved topic as well. I hope to able to discuss it in detail when I get my thoughts sorted out on this topic.

While thinking about Indian music vis a vis Western music, my thoughts veered to movies- Indian movies vis a vis western movies. And I realised another very interesting and deeply significant difference between the two kinds of movies. This is the topic of discussion in this writeup.

When Hindi (and other Indian language) movies began to be made, the movie makers obviously wanted to make profits. Those were the days when India was quite a poor country with extremely low purchasing power per capita. Moreover, vast majority of Indians were illiterate. Under there circumstances, the movie makers decided that they needed to address each and every section of society as well as age group in their movies. Their idea was to maximise the head count for their movies and they hoped to achieve that by catering to all their “requirements”. Thus we had the situation where the movie would pack in all possible kinds of situations and scenarios, viz love, misunderstanding, separation, bedard zamaana, remonstrating with the Almight mother, cruel villain, helpless sister etc. Likewise, we have several songs in the same movie catering to the different emotion requirements of the movie.

Each and every movie tried to attract the same (real all) sections of the population. If a movie became successful, they everyone else would try to ape the contents of that movie. In short, every movie wanted to be a please all movie, and in the process it often ended up pleasing none.

There are some cases where niche market movies were made that appeals to a small portion of audience rather than entire audience, for instance religious movies. But these niche movies were made more out of financial considerations ( availability of small budget) rather than by design.

When one tried to pack in everything in every movie, then obviously the movie ended up looking like jack of all trades and master of none. So the qualities achieved by these movies were not as high as they possibly could have been had they dispensed with some of the lesser important ingredients (for instance comic side plots) and had concentrated only on the main ingredients.

When I compared Indian movies with Western movies, I found a startling difference. Western movie makers did not try to cater to every section of their population. They made movies on a particular genre and tried to cater to lovers of that particular genre only. The result was overall high quality of their movies. Even though these western movies were not targetted at the entire population, they still did big business becaue the audience there were prosperous and even smaller head count for a Western movie meant bigger amount of revenue for Western movies than say for Indian movies that attracted bigger head count. So good quality movies meant for niche market (plus prosperity of the market) meant that overall good quality movies with good budget were made in the West and that did good business.

To put it arithmetically, Indian movie makers had the LCD (least common denominator) of population in mind while making their movies while Western movie makers had the HCF (highest common factor) of population in mind while making their movies. And Western movies proved that quality products aimed at niche market can earn far more in a prosperous population that what can be earned by lesser quality product (where ceiling on quality was imposed deliberately) aimed at impoverished masses in a poor country. So Western movie makers considered market segmentation whereas Indian movie makers tried to cater to the entire population treating that as a unified market without any segmentation.

I have often likened Hindi movies to Indian Railways. And I find that Indian Railways have traditionally followed the very same policy as Hindi movie makers as far as their target audience is considered. Hindi movies try to pack in all ingredients in each and evey movie and end up with a movie that is often unsatisfactory. Indian Railways try to run all kinds of trains, viz Rajdhani, Express Trains, Passenger trains, Goods trains etc on the same track. The passenger tickets are kept artificially lower and goods fares are kept artificially high. As a result, Indian Railways ends up losing punctuality as well as revenue while running passenger trains. They also end up losing goods traffic because goods traffic switches to road which turns out to be economical for them.

Today India is not a poor country unlike in the past. India is the sixth biggest economy in the world with a nominal GDP of $ 2.8 trillions. Per capita annual GDP of $2000 may be low but it is still a vast improvement (200 times) from the past when Indian per capita annual income used to be $100 in 1960s. Using 80:20 principle, which states that 20 % popuation has 80 % of money and the rest 80 % population has the remaining 20% money, it means that today 20 % population of India has a per capita income of $8000 whereas remaining 80 % population has a per capita income of $500. So one can say that 20 % population (viz 26 crore population) of India is already reasonably well off. 26 crore population is equal to the population that Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world. So now it is possible for Hindi movies makers to produce movies of various genres with niche audiences as targets audience rather than seeking to attract the entire population as the target audience, because the niche audiences are now sizeable in number and they are prosperous enough.

Indeed that is happening. Many recent movies are meant for niche audience and the movie makers do not try and make all kinds of compromises that old time movie makers did in their attempt to make please all movies. And the results are quite outstanding.

Take the example of “Dangal”(2016). It is the tale of a rustic retired wrestler who wants to live his dream of wrestling glory through his daughters. He fights society that disapproves of girls taking up such activities and he subjects his daughters to lives of extreme discipline and physical exertion. Usual Hindi movies of yore woould show the girls winning their bouts rightaway after just a token exercise or two, but that is not how it is shown in this movie. The girls work hard but keep losing repeatedly and after every loss, they are made to work even harder. That is how it is in real life. In the past, such movies would not work in India. Movie watchers in the past expected their lead actors to be supermen/ supergirls who were not required to work hard. In fact Indian movies themselves rarely showed the lead actors doing any hard work, or for that matter any work at all. They would only sing songs and that is all they seemed to be doing throughout the movie.

“Dangal” (2016) was a professionally made movie and it caught the imagination of Indian public. More dramatically, it caught the imagination of movie goers in China as well, and the movie did bigger business in China than in India ! It earned more than Rs 800 crores from Chinese market !

It showed that a movie that had outstanding quality had universal appeal even beyond the traditional Indian audience and their diaspora.

That is true for Railways as well. India is at present in a situation where they can think of catering to niche markets of customers by providing them dedicated facilities. Instead of running all kinds of trains on the same track, running goods trains on a dedicated track and passenger trains of separate track would ensure that both kinds of customers would get proper attention. Work on dedicated freight corridor is in advance stages and soon we will be in a situation when goods trains will run on their own dedicated tracks and that would free up the existing Indian Railway tracks for passenger carrying trains.

Then Bullet trains are coming up as well. People who criticise this project as a wasteful exercise are like old time movie makers and old time Railway organisation who feel that all trains and all movies should be for everyone. Bullet trains have noting to do with Indian Railway. They are more like metro rails which too have nothing to do with Indian Railways. We have seen how Metro Rail has changed the face of commuter services in Delhi. Unlike Indian Railways, Metro rail have proved that it is possible to ensure that every commuter enters with a valid ticket and after proper security check. So Metro Railway has been a quantum leap in public transportation in India and it is absolutely world class. Bullet trains too will have its own track and it will have nothing to do with existing rail ntwork. Bullet train too will have Metro rail like effect. In fact Bullet train has more in common with Metro rail rather than normal trains. It competes with short duration flights and it will in fact be a more convenient option compared to flights in those sectors where they will run. It will basically ensure that places like say Ahmadabad and Mumbai would become like suburbs that one could reach in a couple of hours or so.

Just like airlines are meant for more prsperous people, bullet trains too will be for the same segment of population. as mentioned by me earlier, India have 26 crore people who are prosperous and this bullet train is meant for them. They will use it and they will pay full unsubsidised ticket price. Just because the existing Indian Railways train tickets are subsidised does not mean that all future trains and other services need to be subsidised. As mentioned earlier, India is no longer a poor third world coutry. Japan started its bullet rtrains in 1964, just before it became the first Asian country to host Olympics. Japan GDP per capita at that time was $ 840. China had its first bullet train in 2003. at that time. Chinese per capita income was $ 1289 . So these two Asian countries were poorer than India when they developed their high speed trains for the first time. And these bullet trains changed the face of these countries. Now one can reach from Beijing to Shanghai (1300 km) in a little over four hours. This distance is similar to the distance between New Delhi and Mumbai (1386 km). At present New Delhi- Mumbai Central Rajdhani takes about 16 hours to cover this distance. Just imagine this distance being covered in 5 hours ! That would shrink distance for people. This train is a success in China and such trains would succeed in India as well.

I was telling our regulars that I would discuss Railway related topics in detail in my writeups. This writeup gives me one such opportunity where I have put my views across about bullet trains. I hope rail enthusiasts among us (such as Raja, Avinash Scrapwala, Peevesie’s mom, Peevesie’s brother etc) will get some food for thought with this writeup.

As I mentioned, it is time India stopped thinking local and started thinking global. Bullet train would be a step in that direction. “Dangal”(2016) was very much a world class movie made in India. “Bahubali” was another world class movie. These movies have earned India great respect worldwide and have enhanced Indian soft power among foreigners. When I visited Bali recently with my family, a local of Bali asked where we were from. I replied “India”. “Bahubali part two!”- that person exclaimed. 🙂

I watched “Dangal”(2016) onboard the flight on my way back from Bali. And I was suitably impressed. It is a fantastic movie that keeps one spellbound throughout. It is a professionally made movie that has an universal appeal.

Hindi movies cannot do without songs. This movie too has songs but they are background songs and they blend in nicely with the movie. I am happy that the movie makers did not consider throwing in the usual formula of yore where hero’s wife would sing a bhajan, hero would sing an inspirational song, a fakeer would sing a philosophical song and a comedian would sing a comedy song follwed by a cabarat. A movie like this would have fallen flat. Many such Dev Anand movies have fallen flat because of such reasons in the past. Fortunately Aamir Khan the producer of this movie is a professional.

The songs are quite interesting. The song under discussion is especially interesting. The lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya has come up with fun lyrics from the point of view of the two daughters of Mahavir Singh Phogat (played by Aamir Khan). A word like “haanikarak” is what Hindi medium students use in their science class while discussing some chemicals. 🙂

The song is sung by Sarwar Khan and Satraz Khan. Music is composed by Preetam.

The song picturisation is quite good as well. Overall, a superbly created and picturised song.

With this song. “Dangal”(2016) makes its debut in the blog.

The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Leena Chandavarkar, Helen, Raj Mehra, Tiwari, Anwar Hussain, Manmohan, Siddhu, Malika, Urmila Bhatt, Raj Kishore, Ravikant, Daya Devi, Shyam, Dhanraj, Robert Slater, Birbal, Naaz, Dhumal, Mehmood etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

I think I should get over this habit of waking up late to dates. I remembered that today (14 august 2018) was Johnny Lever’s birthday and later, yesterday, around seven in the evening I remembered that 14th august is also Shammi Kapoor’s anniversary. He passed away this date in 2011. Its been seven years.

Shammi Kapoor the man with “Neeli aankhen” (bade hai dil ke kale haan yehi neeli si aankhon waale) were his eyes actually blue or were they light? The gora-chitta-banka naujawan. The dancer who, I am sure, made a number of choreographers cry by doing his own stuff to the rhythm of the songs and had audiences lapping it up. And IMHO Helen was one dancer who managed to follow the choreographer when Shammi did his own stuff on his cue during dance numbers – the last part of “ai ai ya karoon main kya suku suku”is the best example for this. He would have continued in this manner but for the death of his beloved wife Geeta Bali, post which he lost interest for a few years, and then when he returned to the screen he began looking older than his age. He played Vinod Khanna’s older brother in 1971 in “Preetam” and father two years later in “Zameer”. Leena Chandavarkar, his heroine in Preetam, looks very tiny in front of him.

His movies all had memorable songs, mostly sung by Mohd. Rafi in the 60s and later in the 70s & 80s Kishore Kumar sang a few songs filmed on Shammi. There is video on YouTube wherein Shammi talks of his friendship with Kishore Kumar which possibly began at the time of “Mem Sahib” (1956/57) but (in Shammi’s words) he got a chance to lip-sync to Kishore only in the late 70s and 80s. when I heard Shammi mention “Mem Sahib” I decided to see it on YouTube. First thing that struck me was all the actors played characters that we later generation audiences are not familiar with. Meena Kumari played a mod-girl, Shammi Kapoor a negative character and Kishore Kumar a brahmachari who is confused about the ways of the world.

Yesterday when I realised the significance of 14th august with regard to Shammi Kapoor I had a chat with our Atulji to find out if there were any Shammi song left, are we at the bottom of the barrel? He gave me a list of post 1970 movies and also mentioned “Preetam”. I remember having seen this movie made by Bhappi Sonie in the times when doordarshan was the sole source of entertainment. I remember Leena Chandavarkar was paired opposite Shammi and Helen was for Vinod Khanna. I remembered the songs were also decently good.
Today’s song is a typical Shammi Kapoor song in the sense it is sung by Mohd. Rafi with music by Shankar Jaikishan. Only odd man out here is the lyricist -Rajinder Krishan.
