In 2003 this was a very popular song.  They would constantly play this song on FM channels.  We had kept a small FM radio in the office, and usually it was kept on from mid-day, when all the urgent work of the section was done.  Rest of the work could be handled while listening to songs on FM radio. Listening to it many times, tends to make transcribing the lyrics, an easy task. Analyzing the words and their meaning is not so simple.

I thought the word was “udtaa hua wo. . .” in this line “girtaa hua woh aasman se. . .

girtaa huaa woh aasmaan se aa kar gira zameen par
khwaabon mein phir bhi baadal hi thhe wo kehta raha magar

There is the act of ‘falling’ twice in one line.  The poet could mean, that once the fall starts, it stops only when you reach the earth.  It would also mean that falling from a great height, i.e. aasmaan, only rock bottom will stem the fall.

Similarly, there is very interesting simile used in this first line:

toota toota ek parinda aise toota
ke phir jud na paaya
loota loota kis ne uss ko aise loota
ke phir udd na paaya

The bird is broken,
Never to be whole again
Who has done this great pillage,
So, the bird can never fly again.

kho ke apne par hi to
uss ne thha udnaa seekha
gham ko apne saathh mein le le
dard bhi tere kaam aayegaa

It learnt to fly,
Only by losing the wings,
Hold your sadness close,
The pain also will be useful.

tukde tukde ho gaya thha
har sapna jab woh toota aa
bikhre tukdon mein Allah ki
marzi ka manzar paayegaa

When the dreams are shattered to pieces
Arrange those pieces, to find
A new scenario with Allah’s will.

When dreams are broken, wishes are denied, it is always because Allah has willed something better and different for you.

girtaa huaa woh aasmaan se
aa kar gira zameen par
khwaabon mein phir bhi
baadal hi thhe
wo kehta raha magar
Allah ke bande hans de
jo bhi ho kal phir aayegaa

Falling down from the skies
It fell to the earth,
His vision full of clouds
Kept on the refrain,
O Allah’s faithful, laugh
Tomorrow is a new day
There is hope.

Now I know, why it is not ‘udtaa hua’, but ‘girtaa hua…..’.

This is a great motivational song for when the chips are down.  This was the first song of Kailash Kher, which made him famous.  I always thought that this is a private album song, but it is actually a film song from the film ‘Waisa bhi hota hai – II’.  This is supposed to be a sequel to ‘Aisa Bhi Hota Hai’.  Both these movies have passed me by.  I am not sure if I have seen ‘Aisa Bhi Hota Hai’, but I am sure about ‘Waisa bhi hota hai – II’.  Vishal Dadlani is the lyricist and composer with his partner Shekhar. The credits of this movie have a long list of lyricist and music directors and singers.  It also has a longish line of actors.  It seems that the film’s making is a pool of multiple strugglers in different fields of film making, who were trying to get a foothold in the industry at that time.

Kailash Kher is playing himself in the film singing this song.  So this is also a singer actor song.  Another trivia is that Rabbi Shergil also played himself and performed his own song on the screen in this film.

Song – Allah Ke Bande Hans De, Allah Ke Bande (Waisa Bhi Hota Hai II) (2003) Singer – Kailash Kher, Lyrics – Vishal Dadlani, MD – Vishal Shekhar

‘Vadh’ (2002) seems to have become an obscure film by now. Even though the film belongs to 21st century when the marketing through mass media has been the order of the day to promote the film, I do not recall having seen any such marketing blitzes for this film.

On-line searches revealed that it was a low budget film belonging to the genre of ‘suspense murder mystery’. A box office report suggests that the film was a ‘disaster’ as it earned about 50 per cent of the cost of production of the film. I guess, the absence of a well-conceived marketing of the film may have resulted in the prospective film audience not well-informed about the film. Otherwise, why should a film with Nana Patekar should get such a lukewarm reception at the box office? Probably, the low budget did not allow the makers of the film to indulge in high marketing blitzes.

‘Vadh’ (2002) was a maiden venture of Dilip Dhanwani who was in the film distribution business based in Mumbai. The star cast consisted of Nana Patekar, Anupama Verma, Puru Rajkumar, Meghna Kothari, Nakul Vaid, Sambhawana Seth, Arun Bakshi, Raju Mewani, Sweta Menon etc. The film was directed by N.S.R – the abbreviation for Nana Patekar, Rajesh Singh and Raj Bharath, respectively. Raj Bharath was entrusted with directing the film. However, due to alleged interferences by Nana Patekar, he left the film after which the Rajesh Singh was entrusted with the film’s direction. He also left the film on the same ground. Probably, producer thought it better to entrust the direction to Nana Patekar if he wants his film to be completed without any further delay.

The credit title of the film mentions that ‘it is a film by Nana Patekar for Dilip Dhanwani’. This shows as to how much Nana Patekar was involved in making of this film. This alone made me interested in watching the film, the DVD of which was available on one of the video sharing platforms. I watched this film in a single sitting as I found the film engrossing. The build-up of suspense till the last was superb. I could not guess as to who could be the murderer of three victims in the film which was attributed to a serial psychopath killer.

The gist of the story of the film is as under:

Dr, Arjun Singh (Nana Patekar) is a Psychiatrist who is attached to a mental hospital. He has a late marriage with Jyoti Singh (Anupama Verma) who is much younger than him. Dr. Arjun is very protective about his pregnant wife and loves her. His younger brother Vijay (Nakul Vaid) is a police inspector attached to Crime Branch who is in love with Meghna Kothari, the daughter of the Police Commissioner (Arun Bakshi).

In the mental hospital, there is a serial psychopath killer who has been kept in solitary confinement due to his violent behaviour. One day, the serial killer runs away from the hospital by breaking open the grilled door of his room. In this process, he kills three guards of the mental hospital by slicing the throats with ‘X’ slicing marks on the faces of the victims. This is his trade-mark killings. The police forces are looking out for the serial killer as this has created a panic among the residence.

Aryan (Puru Rajkumar) is a childhood friend of Dr. Arjun who is rich and a charming playboy. He spends much of his time in revelry and visits bars and clubs. He prefers casual relations with his girl-friends including the married ones and has no intention of marrying any of them. Dr. Arjun’s wife, Jyoti is also involved with extra marital relation with Aryan.

Soon after the running away of serial killer, one of the girl friends of Aryan is found murdered in her house. While the Crime Branch and Dr. Arjun think that the murder is a handywork of the serial killer with his trade-mark style of killing, Inspector Vijay has a doubt on Aryan as his visiting card is found in his murdered girl-friend’s house. After few days, another girl-friend of Aryan is found murdered in the same style which come to the light when Aryan visits her house. The presence of Aryan in the house makes Vijay confident that it is Aryan who has killed his girl friends in the same style as that of the serial killer so as to wood-wink the police in thinking that it is the work of the serial killer. Inspector Vijay arrests Aryan but due to lack of evidence against him, Aryan gets bail.

In the meanwhile, both Dr Arjun and his wife Jyoti are under threat from the serial killer. as they find ‘X’ mark in blood has been put on faces in their photo-frame. As a precautionary measure, Police Commissioner shifts them to a more secured place with a Commando attached to their new residence. Inspector Vijay ensures that he is present in the house when his brother, Dr. Arjun is on hospital duties.

Despite the security, one day, Jyoti finds that their personal Commando has been murdered in the same fashion as those killed by the serial killer. She gets the panic attack thinking that she and her husband would be the next target of the serial killers. A police team headed by the Police Commissioner visit to scene of the crime. To his horror, Inspector Vijay finds that his brother, Dr Arjun’s dead body is floating in a swimming pool with Jyoti murdered in her room with the same trade mark killing style as that of the serial killer.

The film ends with Police Commissioner taking a vow that he would not leave that mad serial killer and he would find him.

At the outset, the end of the film appears tame. This is because, I have not revealed the suspense part of the film just in case those who had not watched the film and are interested in doing so. The murder mystery has been solved as far as the film’s audience is concerned but for the police in the film, the case of the serial murders is yet to be solved.

The USP of the film is that the director has been successful in keeping the suspense in the film till the last. In fact, he has build-up the suspense as the film story progresses. However, this USP was not sufficient to make the film successful at the box office.

This film belongs to Nana Patekar from start to finish. There is no long and high-pitched dialogues for him as we are used to see him doing so in most of his films. He has a normal dialogue delivery and a restrained performance. Anupama Verma has done a conventional role of a house-wife which she has performed better than what she has been performing in her pop song videos. The suspense effects of the film have been well supported by the background music of Sanjay Chaudhary.

The weakness of the film is that it is too long for a suspense thriller. The film could have been easily condensed within the duration of say, 1 hour 45 minutes instead of 2 hours and 10 minutes to make it sleek for viewers. For example, there was not need to have two club songs of about 5 minutes durations just to support the playboy image of Puru Rajkumar. Such type of songs become distraction in a film which is trying to build-up the suspense. Probably, these two songs were included as a part of box office attractions. But the way these songs were conceived and presented, it would not have been a surprise if even front-benchers had taken a break by walking out of the theatre hall when these two songs were shown on the screen.

I also felt that there was no need for a romantic sub-plot of Inspector Vijay (Nakul Vaid) and his fiancée, Meghana Kothari. In fact, the role of Meghna Kothari is redundant in the film. On top of it, the pair have one song of about 5 minutes duration which appears to be forced upon the film.

And lastly, I missed the presence of N A Ansari type of a character in the film which would have added some aura around him, enhancing the suspense to the murder mystery.

‘Vadh’ (2002) has 6 songs, a high number for a suspense thriller. Except one, none of the song has pleased my ears. I am presenting the only song out of six which I liked and the song is ‘bahut khubsoorat hai aankhen tumhaari’ rendered by Jagjit Singh. The song is written by Nida Fazli which is set to music by Vishal-Shekhar. The song is picturised on Nana Patekar and Anupama Verma.

With this song, ‘Vadh’ (2002) makes its debut in the Blog.

Atul Song-A-Day 15K Song Milestone Celebrations – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Hullo to Atuldom.

Let me wish all a very Happy New Year.

No, my post is not late by three and half months, it is just that India is a country which follows a calendar called Shak Samvat which the Hindus follow and Hijri which the Muslims follow. The new year by the Hijri calendar starts sometime in September but as far as the Hindu Calendar is concerned every region seems to have a different time of the year when the new year starts. And each region has a name for its New Year’s Day – Gudi Padva (Samsaar Padvo in Konkani), Ugadi, Poila Baishak (in East Indian States), Bighu (Bikhu in Uttarakhand), Bishuva Sankranti, Cheti Chand, Vishu or Chitra Vishu (in Kerala and Tamil Nadu), I am sure I am missing a few names in this list – what do I do, we have a vast country. But the common thread here is most of the above are in March – April of the Gregorian calendar (only in some parts new Year is during Diwali and southern part of Kerala has its new year at Onam). In Punjab it is Baishakhi, celebrated on the Mesha Sankraanti which occurs today for this year (generally it is 13th April). So now that explains why I wished Happy New Year.

14th April also happens to be the birth anniversary of the architect of the constitution of India, first law and justice minister and one of India’s founding fathers – Bharat Ratna Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar or Babasaheb Ambedkar as he is popularly known the world over.

He was a jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits), while also supporting the rights of women and labour. My tributes to him on his 128th birthday without spelling his biography here.

There is another event which takes up my day on 14th April every year. In addition to it being our New Year (what we call Vishu) it is the birthdate of a very special person. There is a departure from the usual this year in that the New Year is on the 15th but birthdates don’t change, do they?

So, 14th April is the birthdate of part-time Atulite, full-time Satulite. He is at that year of life when people hang up their boots (he is not hanging them yet) and try to find time for other pleasures and hobbies that took a back seat when they were working hard to make ends meet. This Satulite calls himself Peevesie’s Dad. He takes pleasure in the achievements of his family – his son, daughter, brothers-sisters, brothers & sisters -in-law; is a big bhakt of his parents and parents-in-law; and is generous in encouraging his wife and kids towards whatever they are good at and forever supportive.

Infact he tried his level best to teach me to ride a two-wheeler and didn’t actually give up on me, but I must say I was a bad student who took a whole decade to master riding a two-wheeler. And was rewarded with a two-wheeler to ease my work load as soon as I mastered it. 🙂

As a teenager and right upto the end of my student days I was a staunch hater of any kind of automation and computers in particular. I had a feeling that each computer would eat up the job opportunity of two or three deserving humans (people called me crazy, maybe I was). But it does seem to have replaced a lot of things in people’s lives. Now, today’s birthday boy tried to change my mindset vis-à-vis computers and persuaded me to enroll myself in one of the many match-box size training institutes that tutored commoners about Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc, in addition to teaching a crash course in Corel or PageMaker. He thought it will be a useful skill, I must admit he was not wrong. Then he initiated me into the World-Wide Web and emails, and I am 100% sure he is ruing the day I agreed to learn all that he tried to get me to learn. He finds me at the desktop most of the time these days, and zooming in and around Bangalore (never unnecessarily) on a two-wheeler. And am also sure (secretly) he must be thanking my nervousness of being behind the wheel of a four-wheeler 😉

Oh, there are so many things that I can thank him for – he has lived half his life trying to understand me and my ways and moods. We have common interests in most aspects of life, possibly a little too much of compatibility, according to our children. The song with this post is ideal to express everything that I need to tell him. And the best part about the song is that it is not a lovey-dovey young couple song but a song choreographed on a motley group of honeymoon tourists which has a middle aged couple (Shabana Azmi – Boman Irani), mismatched couple (Ameesha Patel – Karan Khanna), small- town couple (Kay Kay Menon – Raima Sen), seemingly perfect couple (Minisha Lamba – Abhay Deol); and two other couples (Sandhya Mridul – Vikram Chatwal & Dia Mirza – Ranvir Shorey) who are on honeymoon but not exactly in love. (Dia Mirza and Ranvir are not in this song but they are part of the tourists in the Honeymoon Travels bus.) It is from the 2007 Reema Kagti directed “Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.” The music for this song is by Vishal- Shekhar and Javed Akhtar is the lyricist. Sunidhi Chauhan and Shekhar Ravjiani are the playback. The movie was produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. I am in love with the choreographer of this song who has allowed the actors do their own thing which adds to the sweetness of the song.

Today’s song is a party song filmed aboard a cruise ship in Goa. I think the song is ideal for one more occasion – partying for the post number 15000 (FIFTEEN THOUSAND Phew!) of the blog. Let me try to list out all that we are celebrating in this series of celebratory posts – 10 complete years of the blog, 10 year challenge (on-going series); 1,15,40,016 hits (as I write this); 3919 days of existence (at the time of writing this) AND 11032 posts by our fearless leader (as Sudhir calls Atul ji) – we celebrated Atulji’s 10000 individual posts but missed complimenting him for tirelessly giving us 11000 posts. And the biggest point of celebration – post number 15000. In addition to celebrating the New Calendar in various parts of the country.

It has taken five years to get to 15k from 10k with numerous milestones and centuries strewn enroute.  The blog has bonded all of its regular followers, some of who are contributors in various avatars, in a bond like none other, a whole bunch of unrelated people who had never dreamt of being friends and don’t mind being called Atulites. For all this and more to come I thank ASAD the blog which is our collective addiction.

Also a very Happy Birthday to our Satulite.
