Hullo Atuldom

‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ (release date 30th July 2004) is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and directed by David Dhawan. It has a cast headed by Priyanka Chopra, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Amrish Puri, Kadar Khan, with Shashikala, Upasana Singh, Supriya Karnik, Satish Shah, Rajpal Yadav, etc for support. A few well-known faces make cameo appearances as themselves. The songs of the movie are written by Arun Bhairav, Jalees Sherwani (never heard these two names) and Sameer. Sajid- Wajid and Anu Malik are the music composers with Anu Malik giving music for one song and Sajid-Wajid having tuned the rest (there were 8 songs with two songs being multi-version songs).

The movie is the story of two friends Sameer and Sunny who meet in Goa after a gap of many years and only one of them recognizes the other as the ‘bachpan ka yaar‘. Actually Sunny seeks out Sameer with the help of Sameer’s grandmother (Shashikala) and tracks him down in Goa. Sunny gets Sameer to believe that he is after the girl, Rani Singh whom he is trying to woo. That makes it two hurdles for Sameer to overcome in his love-life; the other being Rani’s father (Amrish Puri). The movie has some fun moments between Sameer and Rani’s parents as also the landlord (Kadar Khan) of Sameer and Sunny. After a lot of madcap happenings Sameer comes to know that Sunny is actually Arun Khanna- his bachpan ka yaar – and that his aim in seeking out Sameer was just to reunite with him.

On the way to ‘THE END’ there is a chase through a crowded stadium (filmed at Bangalore’s stadium) after Sameer is taunted by Sunny about Sameer’s anger-management issues. Sameer snatches the microphone from the Chief Guest at the cricketing event, a friendly match between India and Pakistan, much to the amusement of the commentators and the players. He makes a public apology to Rani and her parents and proposes to her in front of the spectators.

This movie has Salman Khan playing Sameer, Akhsay Kumar playing Sunny alias Arun Khanna and Priyanka Chopra playing Rani Singh. Rajpal Yadav plays a madcap astrologer who keeps giving Sameer directions on how to woo Rani which always flop.

There have been a few posts on the blog, since 24th when the movie based on the 1983 world cup had its theatrical release. That movie is on my wish-list, but all those posts and references to cricketers making appearances, as themselves, on the silver screen, reminded me of this movie. Of course we have had Sunil Gavaskar and Sandeep Patil playing romantic characters on-screen and Syed Kirmani playing a negative character too, but we are looking at films that have cricketers playing themselves.

‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ has Navjot Singh Sidhu play a commentator (he had turned a commentator mouthing Sidhuisms by then) and Sajid Khan (the comedian and film maker) sharing the commentary box. Then we have Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra, Irfan Pathan, Mohammad Kaif, Parthiv Patel, and Harbhajan Singh looking at the goings-on, on the pitch, from the pavilion. And (finally) we have Kapil Dev as the chief guest from whom Sameer snatches the microphone. Kapil Paaji also puts in his two-bit to help Sameer’s case with Rani and her father and put an end to the interruption that the drama was causing to the start of the game.

We are having this film making its debut on the blog to wish Salman Khan on his 56th birthday. Here is wishing him health and happiness and a long innings entertaining us Hindi Film Followers. This romantic song is composed by Sajid-Wajid and written by Arun Bhairav. It is sung by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan.

Lyrics

laal dupatta

laal dupatta
udd gaya re bairi hawa ke jhonke se
laal dupatta
udd gaya re bairi hawa ke jhonke se
mujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo
magar meri jaan lega wo
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo
magar meri jaan lega wo

laal dupatta

laal dupatta
udd gaya re tera hawa ke jhonke se
laal dupatta
udd gaya re tera hawa ke jhonke se
tujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo
maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo

oo oo oo oo
oo oo oo
hey hey hey hey hey
la la

laakh chhuopaye baithi thi main
chaand se chehre ko
ik pal mein hi tod diya
bairan hawa ne pehre ko
oo
tere chehre kya jaana
kucch aisa jaadu chhaa gaya
mere chaand ko dekh ke
chaand bhi sharma gaya
mujhe sharam si aaye
haaye tauba
mera dil ghabraaye
haaye tauba
arey aa baahon mein chook naa jaayen
aise mauke se
tujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo
magar meri jaan lega wo

haaye
mehka mehka ye samaa
kehne laga aa pyaar kar
mere sohne yaar tu
dilbar se iqraar kar
oo
tere pyaar ki khushboo
meri saanson mein sama gai
le sajna sab chhod main tere
peechhe peechhe aa gai
tujhe pyaar ho gaya
haaye tauba
iqraar ho gaya
haaye tauba
arey
ab to roke naa rukun main
kisi ke roke se
mujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo
magar meri jaan lega wo
maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo

laal dupatta
udd gaya re bairi hawa ke jhonke se
hoye
laal dupatta
udd gaya re tera hawa ke jhonke se
tujhko piya ne dekh liya
haaye re dhokhe se
maana ke mujhe dil dega wo
magar meri jaan lega wo
maana ke tujhe dil dega wo
magar apni jaan dega wo

Hullo Atuldom

Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom (born 24 November 1982) is an Indian amateur boxer, politician, and incumbent Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. She is the only female to win the World Amateur Boxing Championship six times, the only female boxer to have won a medal in each one of the first seven World Championships, and the only boxer (male or female) to win eight World Championship medals. Nicknamed Magnificent Mary, she is the only Indian female boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing in the flyweight (51 kg) category and winning a bronze medal.

She had also been ranked as the world’s No. 1 female light-flyweight by the International Boxing Association (amateur) (AIBA). She became the first Indian female boxer to win a gold medal in the Asian Games in 2014 at Incheon, South Korea and is the first Indian female boxer to win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She is also the only boxer to become Asian Amateur Boxing Champion for a record six times. She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award, in 2020. She is also a recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2009 and Arjuna award in 2003.

Born as the eldest child, in Manipur, to parents who were tenant farmers, Mary Kom had her schooling at various schools of the Churachandpur district of Manipur. She was participated in all kinds of athletic events specially javelin throw and 400 metres running. She was among the youngsters who were inspired by Dingko Singh, 1998 Bangkok Asian Games Gold medal winner in Boxing and a fellow Manipuri. She switched from athletics to Boxing but kept it a secret from her father who was an ex-wrestler. The family got to know of her involvement in Boxing when her photo appeared in a newspaper when she won the state championship in 2000. Mary Kom is married to footballer Karung Onkholer (Onler) and has three sons including twins. She resumed her training and went back to her winning ways after the birth of her first two children.
(All the above information I have extracted from Wikipedia)

There was a biographical film on her life in 2014 where Priyanka Chopra enacted the role of Mary Kom. The movie had many lesser known actors playing her husband, coach, family etc. Only Shishir Sharma, who played the National Level coach, was the other known face. Even the music composers- Shashi Suman and Shivamm Pathak- were new along with the lyricists Sandip Ssingh and Prashant Ingole. The movie was directed by Omung Kumar and produced jointly by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom18 Motion Pictures. The movie was decent and showed incidents in a cinematic way. So I would suggest that anyone who sees the movie should not complain that details shown is not as it happened in Mary Kom’s life.

How did I land on this movie? Well I was thinking up a post on Priyanka Chopra for her birthday as she turns a year older on 18th July. I was going through her filmography and found that she had sung a few songs in her career which began in 2002 in a Tamil film and 2003 in the Sunny Deol- Preity Zinta starrer ‘Hero: Love Story of a Spy’.

She was Miss World 2000. She has done a whole of gamut of characters including a negative shaded Sonia Kapoor in ‘Aitraaz’ in 2004 for which she got a lot of critical acclaim and nominations/ awards as Best supporting actress and Best performance in a Negative Role. Priyanka has also won the National award for her performance in ‘Fashion’ (2008). If I may add she also managed to find a footing on American Television in the series ‘Quantico’ in 2015.

The song with today’s post is the one she has sung in her own voice. I haven’t seen ‘Mary Kom’ completely so I don’t know if the video accompanying the song is how it happens in the movie or whether the video uploaded on YouTube is a cleverly stitched affair.

Happy Birthday Piggy Chops (a nickname she got during the shoot of BluffMaster! in 2005)

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 17
———————————————————————

Some achievements boggle your mind. A few years ago it was 10k song and now its 10 years of this blog. Maybe I should say it bloggles my mind! Terrible puns aside, I apologize for this delayed write up. Some incidents over the last weekend, caused me to tragically lose my phone, and after a remote data erase, miraculously find it again. It felt like a Hindi film honestly, one I would have titled ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ if there hadn’t already been one by that name.

But today I am spurred into re-action as I seemed to be the only one without a post on this occasion despite being named by the fantastic Atul ji as the youngest contributor (though, isn’t that credit long stolen. I remember a 18 yr old writing about amirbai karnataki?) I decided that ‘देर आए पर दुरुस्त आए’ will be my style and I will write a new article and mark my attendance so to speak.

As I read what Atul ji wrote, I reflected on my own journey, from a watcher of movies to being someone who now stands behind the camera for 16 hrs a day and watches the magic happen. I love watching movies for fun even today and that’s how my first watch of anything still is. But my subsequent watches have me looking at individual shots and camera movements, production design and set decor, costuming and makeup, and all these aspects as they come together with the script and dialogue as an experience. I not only appreciate the executive brilliance but also spend time imagining the sight of some poor production guy whose life turned miserable for the shot to be executed.

Of course there are a lot of people who would like to say that movies made earlier are better than current movies but this honestly not true. Especially the 70s-90s, I grew up in the 90s, but I have to have  my nostalgia glasses glued to my face when I see the movies. Else I will start ranting about their problematic portrayals for a few days. Similarly some movies were technically brilliant then but there is some great original work being done today too. Of course like in a podcast by SnG comedy’s Aadar Malik (nephew to Anu Malik and a comedian in his own right) mentioned, (talking about the lack of technical advancement they recorded under in the 70s), “Yeh log ko itna mehnat aur perfection rakhana padta tha, because ek mistake bhi kitna bhari padta, ek do gaana chura liya toh kya hua aisa lagta hai”

My song today is one I picked not just because of its celebratory mood, nor because it has a varied ensemble that resembles us Atulites, but also to appreciate the hard work behind the whole thing. It’s the first song that’s been filmed, and presented in entirely one take in one camera. Our beloved song from ‘Aradhna’ (1969) had multiple cameras and the song from ‘Main Hoon Na’ had cuts from a separate location. This one had neither and you have to appreciate all the work and practice needed for everyone to be exactly in the place they needed to be at every moment whether in focus or out, their high energy throughout and the absolute conviction in co-ordination they had. There is also a very cute shot of Priyanka doing a dance step like an extra with her face looking away as she moved from one side to another for her next cue. The dance is cute and fun and Priyanka and Ranveer make the cutest siblings.

The song is from ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ (2015) which is directed by Zoya Akhtar. and has a whole list of performers. We have Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh as Kabir Mehra, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Vikrant Massey, Ridhima Sud, Parmeet Sethi, Dolly Mattdo, Manoj Pahwa, Preeti Mamgain, and a few I couldn’t identify dancing along perfectly in sync. The music is by Shankar ehsaan Loy and the lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. The singers are Shankar Mahadevan, Yashita Sharma, Manish Kumar Tipu, Farhan Akhtar and Sukhwinder Singh.

Enjoy. And congratulations to all

Blog Day : 3479 Post No. : 13977

Republic day is a holiday that nearly everyone looks forward to in this country.

As a kid I would hate the day, though. We would have to get ready even earlier than usual, find our way to school for the ‘jhanda vandan’ – flag hoisting ceremony. I would usually be both in the marchpast and the patriotic dance. So, I would have to do a sneak off as soon as the flag is hoisted and get in costume for a badly choreographed patriot dance which had more in common with the actions that accompany a nursery rhyme.

I would then head back home where the society ‘jhanda vandan‘ would be over already and there would be poha for breakfast. My friends and I would chill together and then head home once our parents have finally gone hoarse from calling out to us for lunch. Then of course it would be the ol’e hearty meal and hearty sleep routine.

These days I love the day like the rest of the adult population. Which to be honest is mostly because it’s an off for nearly everyone and most people get to sleep in on a weekday. Except maybe liquor store owners and alcoholics. It is a difficult day for them indeed.

I know I sound cynical, but the way our country is right now, we manage to find our inner patriotism and urge to display our constitutional values only twice a year. We find it in ourselves to be socialist, liberal, proud of our diversities, and nationalist with a urge to do genuine social good. We talk about ‘swachhta abhiyan‘ over non-biodegradable thermocol cups of tea and foiled paper plates of food and plastic spoons. We have really taken our country for granted in a manner that is unprecedented in history.

The other day at the pre-Republic Day annual get together in my society, the party was ended with a loud cheer for a late communal regional leader of Maharashtra. My friends and I had a really uncomfortable look exchange and we then had a private conversation about how certain views sometimes get expressed in our families that we choose to remain silent out of respect for the elders in question. There was also a general agreement that the current political environment leaves very little space for the youth to be fully socialist liberals and thus we are choosing to be capitalists looking to make our way.

I think it’s high time we decide to be patriots outside the National holidays, cricket stadiums and the auditoriums of sports-based movies. Let us inculcate the values that make our nation move forward.

And meanwhile let me introduce some of you to a patriotic song from a recent sports-based movie, ‘Mary Kom’ (2014).

[Ed Note: With this song, the film ‘Mary Kom’ makes its debut on our blog today.]

jhuke tere aage sar
teri god mera ghar
hai tujhe salaam india
india

mushkil waqt mein bhi
hum na khoyen hausla
mil ke  saath chalne ka yoon kar len faisla
mitti hum jo choome to milta josh hai
bas teri hi khaatir jaan ye sarfarosh hai
jeet ka jashan hum manaayenge
aasmaan tiranga sajaana aaj hai
shaan se sabhi ko bataayenge
jeet lenge ye saara jahaan

jhuke tere aage sar
teri god mera ghar
hai tujhe salaam india
jhuke tere aage sar
teri god mera ghar
hai tujhe salaam india
india aa aaaaaaa
india aa
india

ho abr se iraade hon
koshisho ke waade hon
manzil milegi chaahe raahein hon khafa
aaaaaaaaaa
ho abr se iraade hon
koshisho ke waade hon
manzil milegi chaahe raahein hon khafa
desh ye sikhaata hai
himmatein badhaata hai
thhokar se gir ke na tu rukna be-wajaah
tera ye watan
kar kuch bhi jatan tu
jaan bhi is pe luta de tu
dar ko dara ke raggon mein fateh ka josh jaga
arsh ki udaane lagani hain
in hawaaoon ka rukh badalna aaj hai
desh ye ibbadat humari hai
de tu ye aaj sab ko bataa

jhuke tere aage sar
teri god mera ghar
hai tujhe salaam india
jhuke tere aage sar
teri god mera ghar
hai tujhe salaam india
jhuke tere aage sar
teri god mera ghar
hai tujhe salaam india
jhuke tere aage sar
teri god mera ghar
hai tujhe salaam india
aaaaaa

Hullo to all in Atuldom

On this blog, Atul has a page for birthdays of various Hindi film artistes. He has meticulously kept track of these dates and makes it a point, as much as possible, to post a song honouring the artiste on the concerned date. That is like a doctor treating his patients.

Atul ji’s 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 7
——————————————————————–

Sudhir ji, got in touch with us Atulwaasis and told us that there is a HUGE milestone coming up on the blog.

I had no clue that it was this huge. With my little knowledge of maths, I did some calculation and it works to an average of around 3 posts a day for the last 9 years. If that just seems like a number to you – you either do not understand hard work when you see it, or you are just a passer by seeing this blog for the first time.

While I still wonder how it is even possible to have such commitment and endurance I am reminded of what Atul ji often tells us – this is a “Labour of Love”. And then it all falls in place and makes so much sense. Atul ji has been a beacon of light, a guru, a nostalgia maker, the man who got all us crazy Atulwaasis together.
