And so wrote the scribe – “Yaadon Ka Sahaara Na Hota, Hum Chhod Ke Duniya Chal Dete” .

Thirty seven years to date. The life and the world has moved on, as it always does. It is the everyday drudgery and the process of existence, that makes life continue with what it is. But it is the memories of the sounds of dear ones that make life beautiful, and livable. Memories, that are frozen in time, for they are past and will never be alive and here again today. And yet, these memories live, in the minds, in remembrances, and in the sounds captured in technology. Ah yes, it is these sounds that make is possible to exist, with the drudgery of everyday existence.

“Be-qaraar Dil Tu Gaaye Jaa”

The sounds of restlessness coming from a restive heart. A voice that exists in a multitude of colors and flavors and moods. A voice that has entertained the listeners for the better part of four decades. A voice that has left an indelible stamp on the history of Hindi Cinema and Hindi Film Music. A voice that holds the trademark on the ultimate songs of fun that are completely and irrefutably non-replicable, priceless gems of yodeling, mimicry and voice modulation. A voice that became the alter-ego of many a successful careers, so much so that in the 70s and 80s, the lead male actors would not consider their careers and performances complete unless this voice was in the background. Even thespian Dilip Kumar, after having spent three decades in the industry, eventually performed on screen, with this voice behind him (‘Sagina’, 1974). A voice that was nominated 27 times for Filmfare awards for best male singer, in a span of just 16 years (1970 to 1986), winning it eight times in the process. A voice whose power of influence simply could not be matched, especially during the peak years in the 1970s and 80s.

HAM LOG (1951) was a typical Zia Sarhadi film highlighting the social issues in keeping with the socialistic ideology followed by Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA). The film was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone. In this film, social issues were raised that arose out of the difficulties faced by a poor family of Lalaji Harcharandas (Kanhaiyalal) and his wife (Durga Khote), unemployed son Raj (Balraj Sahani), a sickly daughter Paro (Nutan) and a school going son (Master Ratan). The problem is further accentuated by the arrest of Lalaji for allegedly stealing money from his employer for which he is sent to prison.

Recently,I came across a duet song ‘chanda tale muskuraaye jawaaniyaan’ from the film ‘CHANDI RANI’ (1953) sung by Talat Mehmood and P Bhanumathi. I had never heard of the film or the song. From the Indian Film Trade and other websites, I could gather that the film was produced under the banner of Bharani Pictures jointly owned by P S Ramakrishna Rao and P Bhanumathi and directed by herself. The film was made in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi and released simultaneously. This was her debut film as a director. She was also the lead actor ( double roles) with N T Rama Rao. I could not get synopsis of this film but I guess from the title of the film that it was a film based on some fairy tale. It is said that with this film, she became the first woman in the history of Indian film industry to produce, direct, act and sing in a film.

January 6th is the death anniversary of Jaidev Verma, known as Jaidev in Hindi film world. He was one of those unlucky music directors who, despite being extremely talented, did not make it to the top in Bollywood. He had given hit songs in Hum Dono (1961), Kinaare Kinaare (1963), Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Reshma Aur Shera (1972) , Gaman (1979) and many more. He is the only music director who won National Award for best music direction three times for Hindi films – Reshma Aur Sehra, Gaman and Ankahee.

The shock of news was too much to digest yesterday. I was browsing this blog, when Nahm Bhai’s brief message appeared in the comments. I couldn’t believe. Just very recently, I had read an interview in the newspapers. And the Yahoo-man seemed to be set to go on forever. Age seemed never to have touched his spirit. A childhood idol for me, he is the Prince, the true Prince of the clan, and will always remain thus for me.
