“Waqt” (1965) was one of the most influential Hindi movies of all times. The story of “Waqt” (1965) was by no means original, but the scale and presentation of the the story was was certainly grand. I have already given several reasons in the past why I call this movie an influential movie.

“Waqt” (1965) was a movie that like most B R Chopra movies rewrote the rules of the game. This movie was a multistarrer movie at a time when this term was not even coined. This term as well as the concept would be made use of in Hindi movies ten years later in “Sholay” (1975) and other movies.

I have discussed as many as five wonderful songs from “Waqt” (1965) in the past and yet this song was not one of them ! It just goes on to prove my point that this movie, in addition to being a multi starrer, was a musical blockbuster too.

“Waqt” (1965) was the first multi starrer Hindi movie of the golden era. It had several leading stars of the time namely Sunil Dutt,Sadhana,Raj Kumar,Sharmila Tagore,Shashi Kapoor,Balraj sahni,Achla Sachdev etc. The story line, that had the big family of Balraj Sahni separating in an earthquake, only to meet again towards the end, may look hackneyed now, but it was a novelty those days.In fact, it was the story of this movie that led to multi-starrers, as well as lost and found movies of 1970s.

“Waqt” (1965) was a path breaking movie in more ways than one. For one, it was a multistarrer movie, one decade before this term came into circulation. Secondly, it was the movie that set the rules for lost and found movies which became the norm one decade later. “Waqt” (1965) was the movie that started the fad of lost and found movies which was so eagerly lapped up by Manmohan Desai one decade later. In this movie, there are three sons and the parents and they get separated from each other after an earthquake and reunite only in the last reel. So B R Chopra showed the way as far as lost and found movies were concerned.

“Waqt” was the first multi starrer movie in Bollywood history, though some people call “Kismat” ( a movie of 1940s) as the first multi starrer.
