Nostalgia has always been a good topic for songs. There have been quite a few nostalgic songs in Bollywood movies that have become evergreen. Even among nostalgic songs, songs recalling one’s childhood tend to become most unforgettable of all such songs.
One of the most well known and well remembered nostalgic song about childhood is this song from “Devar” sung by Mukesh. This song is unlikely to be forgotten with time. It is simply timeless. Mukesh’s haunting voice and Anand Bakshi’s Shailendra like lyrics, not to forget Roshan’s timeless music, has seen to it.

Song-aaya hai mujhe phir yaad wo zalim (Devar) (1966) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Roshan
Lyrics
aaa haa
aayaa hai mujhe phir yaad wo zaalim
guzraa zamaanaa bachpan kaa
haay re akele chhod ke jaanaa
aur na aanaa bachpan kaa
aayaa hai mujhe phir yaad wo zaalim
wo khel wo saathi wo jhoole
wo daud ke kahnaa aa chhoole
wo khel wo saathi wo jhoole
wo daud ke kahnaa aa chhoole
ham aaj talak bhee na bhoole
ham aaj talak bhee na bhoole
wo khwaab suhaanaa bachapan ka
aayaa hai mujhe phir yaad wo zaalim
iski sabko pahchaan nahin
iski sabko pahchaan nahin
ye do din ka mehamaan nahin
ye do din ka mehamaan nahin
mushkil hai bahut, aasaan nahin
mushkil hai bahut, aasaan nahin
ye pyaar bhulaanaa bachpan ka
aayaa hai mujhe phir yaad wo zaalim
mil kar royen fariyaad karen
un beete dinon ki yaad karen
mil kar royen fariyaad karen
un beete dinon ki yaad karen
ai kaash kahin mil jaaye koi
ai kaash kahin mil jaaye koi
wo meet puraanaa bachapan ka
aayaa hai mujhe phir yaad vo zaalim
guzraa zamaanaa bachpan kaa
haay re akele chhod ke jaanaa
aur na aanaa bachapan kaa
Translation
I am once again cruelly reminded
of those childhood days
How unfortunate that those days should leave us
never to come back again
Those playmates, those swings
Those games of hide and seek
I have yet to forget those games
So dream like were those childhood days
Few people appreciate them
It is not a passing phase
It is not easy, rather it is exceedingly difficult
to forget the love of childhood
We may meet again and remonstrate
we may reminisce those days
How I wish that I met my childhood friend once again
I am once again cruelly reminded
of those childhood days
How unfortunate that those days should leave us
never to come back again

Hi Atul,
The song has a Raj Kapoor touch to it… maybe because of “Shailendra-like” lyrics …. didn’t imagine Dharam in the song! Another lucky actor who got some memorable Mukesh and Rafi songs in his B&W movies.

Thanks for posting this Atul. Reminded me of my Father. He was a big Mukesh fan and I have heard him hum this song many a times. Also, this song could also be added as part of the PianoSong group.

I think I watched this movie in the weekly screenings of Hindi movies at our colony club at place we were staying during 1975-79.
This ‘nostalgic’ song is since then ‘nostalgic’ for me too, and it brings back many memories !!

Lovely song.
There is another very good Mukesh song in this film – very rich in lyrics. “Baharon ne mera chaman lootkar…”.
The movie itself is a good movie…different from run-of-the-mill movies of heroes chasing heroines in a park. 🙂
