I am not much impressed with the present day Bollywood music, and so I do not follow it. Once, while travelling by bus, I was subjected to some songs blaring from the audio system of the vehicle. Most songs appeared typically “modern” read “trash” to my ears, but one song caught my ears. It went “main yahan hoon yahan”. I wondered how such a catchy tune, so reminiscent of music in the era betwen 1950-70 got created after 2000 ?

This song lingered in my mind. When I went home and googled it, I found that it was from “Veer Zaara”. Wow ! So that was the explanation for this tune. Veer Zaara uses tunes that Madan Mohan had left unused when he died in 1975.

What a melodious tune ! Some tunes in “Veer Zaara” were those that Madan Mohan had composed while creating music for “Mausam”. But this tune in question dates even earlier. This tune was composed in 1950s, but Madan Mohan could never find a suitable situation in any of his movies to use it.

Just imagine, a tune created in 1950s being used in 2004, 30 years after the composer’s death, and sung by a singer who was perhaps not even born when the tune was composed, and the lyrics was written by a person, who was barely a school kid at that time. Udit Narayan and Javed Akhtar can now boast that they figured in a song composed by Madan Mohan.

I absolutely love this song. The music is magic. And the picturisation is beautiful. Udit Nayayan has sung the song beautifully, in a voice that almost sounds like Shahrukh Khan’s voice. Preity Zinta looks so beautiful and pretty in this picturisation. And Javed Akhtar has written beautiful lyrics.

And the encouraging fact is, even the younger present generation of listeners have loved this song.

Song- Main yahan hoon yahan (Veer Zaara) (2004) Singer-Udit Narayan, Lyrics-Javed Akhtar, MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

jaanam dekh lo mit gayin dooriyaan
main yahan hoon yahan hoon yahaan hoon yahan

jaanam dekh lo mit gayin dooriyaan
main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan
jaanam dekh lo mit gayin dooriyaan
main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan
kaisee sarhadein kaisee mazbooriyaan
main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan

tum chhupa na sakogee main wo raaz hoon
tum bhula na sakogee wo andaaz hoon
goonjta hoon jo dil mein to hairaan ho kyun
main tumhare hi dil kee to aawaaz hoon
sun sako to suno dhadkanon ki zabaan
main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan
kaisee sarhadein kaisee mazbooriyan
main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan

main hee main ab tumhaare khayaalon mein hoon
main jawaabon mein hoon
main sawaalon mein hoon
main tumhaare har ek khwaab mein hoon basa
main tumhaaree nazar ke ujaalon mein hoon
dekhtee ho mujhe dekhtee ho jahaan
main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan
jaanam dekh lo mit gayin dooriyaan
main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan
kaisee sarhadein kaisee mazbooriyaan
main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan

main yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan hoon yahaan

This is the first time I am hearing this song.
My knowledge of songs of this decade is less than the number of “seniors” we have in the Indian cricket team. 🙂

What a fantastic song it is….soft, pleasing music, beautifully sung by Udit (I always find him very good, his diction is also the best of them all !). And indeed the picturisation is also very good.

Thanks for broadening my knowledge of songs.

This is music for the soul – it touches your heart. Veer Zaara is my daughters and my favourite film and everytime we watch we enjoy it more than the last time. The picturisation of both actors is awesome and music is out of this world. If you have not seen it – I recommend you watch it at least once if not more times ….
