Iint ki dukki pan ka ikka
Posted on: February 5, 2009
We have had quite a few songs talking about Bombay. But there have been few songs talking about other major cities.
As long back as 1958, we had one song that talked about Calcutta.
This song “iint ki dukki paan ka ikka” was from “Howrah Bridge”. The song is sung by Rafi and picturised on Om Prakash who is seen driving a tonga and singing this song.
The lyricist was Qamar Jalalabadi and O P Nayyar was the music director.
watching the Calcutta of 50 years ago through his song is quite a trip down memory lane. I am surprised to see just how less crowded the place was, and how fewer buildings there used to be those days.
Song-iint ki dukki paan ka ikka (Howrah Bridge) (1958) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Qamar Jalalabadi, MD-O P Nayyar
Lyrics
iint ki dukki paan ka ikka
iint ki dukki paan ka ikka
kahin joker kahin satta hai
sunoji ye kalkatta hai
iint ki dukki paan ka ikka
kahin joker kahin satta hai
sunoji ye kalkatta hai
ballygunje ki jheel pe babu
aayen roop ke das
jheel kinaare badhti jaaye
matwaalon ki pyaas
na pocket me maal maal hai babu
na pocket me maal maal hai babu
na kapda hai na latta hai
suno babu ye kalkatta hai
iint ki dukki paan ka ikka
kahin joker kahin satta hai
sunoji ye kalkatta hai
chaurangi ke chowk mein dekho matwaale bangali
rasgulle ki meethi baaten inki shaan nirali
kahin mukherji kahin baneerji
kahin mukherji kahin baneerji
kahin ghosh kahin datta hai
sunoji ye kalkatta hai
ho hatke
iint ki dukki paan ka ikka
kahin joker kahin satta hai
sunoji ye kalkatta hai
ye basti hai aag ka dariya
ismein Howrah pul hai
apni jaan bachha lo babu
warna dabba gul hai
sar par paaon rakhkar bhaago
sar par paaon rakhkar bhaago
katne wala patta hai
suno ji ye kalkatta hai
hurr
iint ki dukki paan ka ikka
kahin joker kahin satta hai
sunoji ye kalkatta hai
ho haha

That is true. I was watching this silly film the other day, and Mumabi/Bombay at the time is so empty of traffic that even with double decker buses etc., the streets look wide, the pavements look empty.
Is over-population a fact? Follow Hindi films through the ages and you can see how our landscape has been bending under the weight of our people :))

Beautiful lyrics woven into nice composition makes a song 50 years younger.
Kolkata is over crowded now a days so is going to be our India.
Rates of Rasgulla are skyrocketing.
Other songs from the film “Aaiye Meharban” by “Asha Bhosle” and “Mera Naam Chin Chin” by “Geeta Dutt” are worth listening.

I think the song is also Om Parkash secretly warning to Ashok Kumar, who seems to be hiding in the baggage space of this tonga. and keeping the passenger from looking around too much.
