Chhoti si mulaaqaat pyaar ban gayi

Posted on: February 27, 2009

When one listens to this song, and finds out that Shankar Jaikishan are the music directors and Hasrat Jaipuri the lyricist, then one can safely assume that this Rafi song is picturised on Shammi. And indeed, I have thought so about this song for more than four decades. It indeed seems to fulfil all the ingredients that one had in a Shammi Kapoor movie.

It was only two days back that I managed to get hold of the video of this song. Beginning of the song shows Rajendranath. Good, so he is there as the sidekick of the hero ? But then I see that instead of helping the hero out, Rajendranath is making fun of the hero. The hero is unable to blow his trumpet properly and Rajendranath is laughing his heart out at the discomfiture of the hero. How dare Rajendranath do it to Shammi Kapoor ? It is a sign that the hero may be someone else.

The hero, who does not resemble Shammi Kapoor, and bears some resemblence to Vishwajeet, takes off his coat after two unsuccessful attempts of blowing the trumpet. Rajendranath gets ready to go ROFL again, but he is disappointed to find the trumpet blowing properly this time.

The person most relieved and happy at this nice turn of events is Vyjyantimala.

The hero strats singing the title song of the movie. “Chhoti di mulaaqaat pyaar ban gayi, pyaar banke gale ka haar ban gayi”.

Vyjyanti Mala, who has danced Bharatnatyam and Kathak in lots of songs, is seen to “twist” in this song, which was the latest fad in Bollywood movies those days.

The hero, incidentally was Uttam Kumar, the superstar of Bangla movies. He would occasionally foray into Bollywood movies, and this was perhaps his first Bollywood movie.

I am told that this movie was a box office success. I am sure the music of this movie, and especially this song, may have played a major role in the success of the movie. As I mentioned, this song was the only thing about this movie that I was ever aware of till two days back.

Needless to say, this song is a timeless and evergreen song.

hosh le gayi sarkaar ki adaa
sarkaar ki add dildaar ban gayi
dildaar banke gale ka haar ban gayi

aage badh chuke manzilon se ham
peeche rah gaye chaand ke qadam

Uttam Kumar is known for his sober roles in Bengali films but proves to a good twist dancer.vaijanti Mala to is great.

you said that bishwajeet somewhat resembles uttam kumar…well, that may be the greatest compliment for bishwajeet ever! uttam kumar is not just a superstar in bengal but he is probably the best actor that i have seen on screen to have played the role of hero (and i find him to a better actor than amitabh, dilip kumar, kamal hassan etc. – all of whom are GREAT actors themselves) but this film chhoti si mulaqat, as far as i know, was a failure. i have heard that it is a terrible film. generally uttam kumar’s exploits in hindi cinema had not been successful which contrasts his popularity in bangla cinema.

but thanks for the lyrics…as for the hundreds of others you have posted in this blog of yours!

I am very much aware that Uttam Kumar was the superstar of Bangla movie as I have mentioned in the write up. And I am also aware that Vishwajeet’s son, Prasenjit was a big star in Bangla movies.
