Tora man darpan kahlaaye

Posted on: February 27, 2009

When I watched “Kaajal” (1965) some 15 years later in a movie hall, I was all prepared to get bored to death when I realised that this movie had Raj KUmar and Meena Kumari in the lead roles, and the movie. But then a song appeared, then another, then another…. ad infinitum.

And all these songs were iconic songs. Not just me, most other people sitting in the movie hall was just as impressed and stunned. How can one movie be full of such classic songs !

Just as I posted so many great songs from “Badi Bahan” (1949), now I am thinking of posting the songs of “Kaajal” one by one. In that series, here is the first song- “tora man darpan kahlaaye”.

Sung by Asha Bhonsle, this song appears at the beginning of the movie. Sahir wrote the lyrics and Ravi composed the music.

Picturised on Meena Kumari, this song is one of the most well known bhajans that have been created by Bollywood. Considering that Ravi was the music director, that was only to be expected.

Song-Tora man darpan kahlaaye (Kaajal) (1965) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

tora man darpan kahlaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
bhale bure saare karmon ko,
dekhe aur dikhaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye

man hi devta, man hi Ishwar, man se badaa na koy
man hi devta, man hi Ishwar, man se badaa na koy
man ujiyaara jab jab phaile, jag ujiyaaraa hoy
is ujle darpan par praani
is ujle darpan par praani
dhool na jamne paaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
bhale bure saare karmon ko,
dekhe aur dikhaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye

sukh ki kaliyaan, dukh ke kaante, man sabkaa aadhaar
sukh ki kaliyaan, dukh ke kaante, man sabkaa aadhaar
man se koyi baat chhupe naa, man ke nain hazaar
jag se chaahe bhaag le koyi
jag se chaahe bhaag le koyi,
man se bhaag na paaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
bhale bure saare karmon ko,
dekhe aur dikhaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye

tan ki daulat dhalti chhaayaa man kaa dhan anmol
tan ki daulat dhalti chhaayaa man kaa dhan anmol
tan ke kaaran man ke dhan ko mat maati mein raund
man ki qadar bhulaanewaalaa
man ki qadar bhulaanewaalaa veeraan janam ganvaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
bhale bure saare karmon ko,
dekhe aur dikhaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye
tora man darpan kahlaaye

The most amazing thing about this flick is Dharmendra playing the role of Meena Kumari’s brother!

Good observation !

can you post me the english translation of this song tora man darpan kahelaye

Our mind is like a mirror it shows us good n bad experiences that we have been through whaT is the meaning of Karma?

It means my karm whatever I do with my hands or mind or body is karma. So mind has a hard disk which stores everything without being biased for mind there is nothing good or nothing bad it will keep storing and it has the ability to bring back those memories at random access wgenevr it wants,

That’s why it is called darpan a mirror …..

If younlike to understand further please respond I shall revert soon

this is awsome song i love it so much i am singing it in a christmas festival in art of living

two corrections:

“mat maati mein rol”

and

“heera janam gavaye”

Sahir has immortalised this bhajan.
