Jalte hain jiske liye
Posted April 14, 2009
on:“Sujata” (1959) was a sad movie, from whatever little I have gathered about it. I have not been able to watch it ( I cannot stand sad movies) but its music is a different matter altogether. S D Burman created some immortal music in this movie.
I had posted one immortal “lori” already from this song (nanhi kali sone chali hawa dheere aana) in Geeta Dutt’s voice. Here is another superb song from this song, this one in Talat Mahmood’s voice. “Jalte hain jiske liye” was originally contemplated to be sung in Rafi’s voice, but Jaidev, S D Burman’s assistant in this movie, suggested that Talat’s voice would be more suitable for this song. And indeed, the soft silken voice of Talat sounds so wonderful in this song.
This song, which was written by Majrooh Suultanpuri, was picturised on Sunil Dutt and Nutan. It is a “phone” song, where Sunil Dutt rings up Nutan and sings this song on phone. Well, there were very few phones in 1959 ( exactly half a century ago) and singing a song on phone was not good for one’s telephone bills those days unless one was doing it for very important reasons. And I agree, singing to Nutan was an important enough reason to run up hefty phone bills- and Raja would readily agree with me. 😉
PS-By Raja,I mean my friend Raja, not the other Raja of telecom “fame”. 🙂
Song-Jalte hain jiske liye (Sujata) (1959) Singer-Talat Mahmood,Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-S D Burman
Lyrics
hmm hmm hmm
Jalte hain jiske liye
teri aankhon ke diye
dhoondh laya hoon wohi
geet main tere liye
jalte hain jiske liye
jalte hain jiske liye
teri ankhon ke diye
dhoondh llaya hoon wohi
geet main tere liye
jalte hain jiske liye
dard ban ke jo mere dil me raha
dhal na sakaa
jaadoo ban ke teri aankhon me ruka
chal na saka
dard ban ke jo mere dil me raha
dhal na sakaa
jaadoo ban ke teri aankhon me ruka
chal na saka
aaj laaya hon wohi
geet main tere liye
jalte hain jiske liye
dil me rakh lenaa ise
haathon se ye chhote na kahin
geet naazuk hai mera
sheeshe se bhi
toote na kahin
dil me rakh lena ise
haathon se ye chhote na kahin
geet naazuk hai mera sheeshe se bhi
toote na kahin
gungunaaunga yehi geet main tere liye
jalte hain jiske liye
jab talak naa ye tere ras ke bhare hothon se mile
yoon hi awaara phiregaa ye teri zulfon ke tale
jab talak naa ye tere ras ke bhare hothon se mile
yoon hi awaara phiregaa ye teri zulfon ke tale
gaaye jaaungaa yehi geet main tere liye
jalte hain jiske liye
teri aankhon ke diye
dhoondh laaya hoon wohi
geet main tere liye
jalte hain jiske liye

I was listening to this song today and wondering why I hadn’t seen it on your site and looked it up, and there it was! I am still wondering why I hadn’t seen it until today. What an amazing song! It took me back 50 years to a romantic time when everything was so quiet and soft and gentle. Thanks for all the memories, Atul!

I was raking my brain to remember this song; it used to be on of my favorite songs before. Ultimately, I thought I’ll google “sunil dutt sad song phone” and I landed up on your blog and got what I was looking for! Thanks!

It is my all time favourite song, alongwith the songs of bandini, SDBurman, at his best in this genre of sad / sweet songs. Another incident pertaining to this song, is S D B was said to be convinced Mohammad Rafi would still have sung this song better, as it was composed with him in mind.
Regards, even though it is in my memory bank, good to be reminded.

Thanks for this post on this wonderful song. Talat’s voice is so soothing to listen to. By the way, I see that you posted this in 2009 and mention, I am sure Raja would agree, where you actually mean Raja Swaminathan, your friend. Today, it could also mean the ex-telecom minister A Raja ;).

Beautiful song, Atul… takes me back to my childhood and times spent in front of the TV — in a neighbor’s house, no doubt — watching this movie of Doordarshan… 🙂

Being happy and sad(at times for some at all times for others) is a part of life. Sujatha is a fantastic movie. The picturization, the direction, the editing and the music with fabulous lyrics, everything about this movie is great. You might be able to see the movie from some site for old Hindi movies.

One of my very favorite song. I like Nutanji as an actor. She is very talented and very humble in life. I had the fortune of seeing her in person during one of the functions held in Shanmughananda Hall, opposite to Gandhi Market in Matunga, years ago.

I loved this song in my teenage years and remains my favorite today. Sujata was one of the classic films of Bimal Roy and Sunil Dutt-Nutan made it a memorable film

I have been singing this immortal song to my lady love for the last 20 years. neither she nor I ever lose the vibration of the music- it is indeed an immortal song. Nutan was a classic actress. Her expression told more than her words. She hardly needed any direction. Those were the days!

Lovely song.
Atul, “Sujata” is not a sad movie. It is an all-time classic by Bimal Roy.
Lovely story, lovely songs. And it has a happy ending.
And it has Sunil Dutt and Nutan. My favourite combination.
