When “Neki aur Badi” (1949), the first movie of Roshan as a music director flopped, the sensitive music director was so disappointed that he reportedly wanted to commit suicide. Kidar Sharma, who gave him his first break, gave him his second break too, in “Baawre Nain” (1950). The songs of this movie became popular and Roshan, as they say, never looked back since.

Many people may have noticed that the picturised versions of many songs are often different from their audio versions. One reason could be that the picturised version is often curtailed while editing the movie. But the main reason for the difference between picturised version and audio version is more technical. In olden days, it was technically not possible to record a song once and use it for audio as well as picturised versions. So those days the same song used to be recorded twice- once for the picturisation and once for the audio recording. So one could find some slight, and sometimes, more than slight differences in the two versions of the same song.

While listeneing to the songs of old movies, we often praise the singer and/ or the music director, but many of us tend to underestimate the contribution of the lyricist. However great a tune, or however wonderful a voice may be, unless the singer gets a good well written song, it is not very likely that the song is going to catch the imagination of the public.

Roshan made his debut at nearly the same time as most legendary singers (Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar etc). But is is interesting to note that Roshan used Kishore Kumar’s voice only 8 times, all all these songs were in 1952 and 1953.

“Sheikh Chilli” (1956) was what was then regarded as a B grade movie. But the movie appears quite A grade in its overall quality. Mahipal and Shyama were the lead actors and I absolutely refuse to call Shyama a B grade actress. And Mahipal too has earned quite a repulation as a hero in these movies.

“Baawre Nain” (1950) was the second movie as a music director for Roshan. Learning from his mistakes as a music director in his first movie, Roshan made amends, and came up with such an amazing musical score in this movie that the brand name of Roshan was launched with this movie. Till today, his descendents have been using the name Roshan ( which was the first name of Roshalal Nagrath) as a surname and as a brand name. And this brand name first got recognition in 1950 with this movie.

I am aware that “Babul” (1950) had Dilip Kumar and Nargis in lead roles. So I was confused when I watched this song from “Babul”. I had no difficulty identifying Dilip Kumar singing in Talat Mehmood’s voice, but who was the lady. she looked unfamiliar. And she did not look like Nargis.
