It can be noticed that four movies out of 8 have since been YIPPEED. Another movie is one short of YIPPEEdom but that song seems unavailable as of now.

That leaves us with three movies that are eligible for Blog Ten year challenge today (11 march 2022). This time, for a change, I have decided that ll three movies should be taken up under Blog Ten Year Challenge.

“Alibaba Aur Chaalis Chor”(1954) is one those movies. This movie produced and directed by Homi Wadia for Basant Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Mahipal, Shakila, B M Vyas, S N Tripathi, Maruti, Sharda etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it . Four songs from the movie have been covered so far. Here is the fifth song. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Raja Mehdi Ali Khan is the lyricist. Music is composed by S N Tripathi and Chitragupta.

The song is ppicturised on Shakeela, B.M.Vyas, Mahipal ,Maruti Rao etc in it.

This Week, That Year – 8
———————————–
07Nov – 13Nov, 2011

OK yes, the tag line is correct, but the date is definitely out of sequence. Sincere apologies for this parallax effect. This is not the week of 7th Nov. This post should have come at least 6 weeks ago. And truly, the post template and lyrics and all the tag stuff was ready then, but the words to compose the post were trapped behind some real and imagined ‘constraints’.

Ah but you will say, why pitch in with the week of 7th Nov now, six weeks later. Well surely, for a special reason. That was a special week, with a very special milestone reached by the blog. On Saturday, the 13th November, 2011, we reached the 5000th post. That day, the blog had been in existence for 1,213 days – exactly 3 years, 3 months and 26 days. And we completed 5,000 posts, at a simple daily average of 4+ songs – day on day.

Superlatives have become repetitive on this blog now, as we have written time and again about the blog’s progress over the years. But the wonder is that the wonder simply does not cease to amaze – the wonder of the blog itself, of being on the blog, of being part of the bandwagon. Whether the pace is slow or fast, we have never been without steam.

Looking back then, from this 13+ years vantage point, it seems like just a speck on the past time line. But just think about it – about the feelings then, on arriving at the 5000th station of this journey. And I am sure, as we looked ahead at the future, this 16,700+ post compendium, was not even visible on the time line. And probably not even in the minds of the bandwagoneers. Some member or members did mention 10,000, maybe. But going beyond that, then crossing the 15,000 mark, and still continue to merrily chug along – probably that thought did not even cross anyone’s mind. The ambience has changed so much since those days 10 years ago. Now, the feeling is that nothing is impossible for this bandwagon and its fearless leader.

It was a dhamaaka celebration. A celebration that store the hearts of everyone – literally. The blog ne loot liya mil ke gaana sun’ne waalon ko. . .

It was a calculated and a planned choice – the song I mean. Lyrics from the pen of Shewan Rizvi, music composed by Bulo C Rani and rendered with such zest and fervor by Ismail Azaad Qawwaal. And on screen, a name that we had some hard time digging up and confirming – Sheikh, the comedian. Yes, the qawwaali “Hamen To Loot Liya Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne”. The qawwali that merits to be counted amongs the top 5 iconic qawaalis in Hindi films. That was the choice for the 5000th milestone song for the blog. The write up that day was a shared effort by Atul ji, Raja ji and yours truly. It truly is an honor to be part of that write up.

Ten years later, as we look back, it surely is a major joy that we picked this song for the 5000th milestone.

Now let’s play the numbers game for the week that was – from 7th to 13th November. A whopping 50 songs were posted that week, for an average of little above 7 songs per day. Quite a prolific week that was. Total number films showcased were 43. The film ‘Khel’ of 1950 made four appearances, the film ‘Mayur Pankh’ of 1956 made 3 appearances and ‘Anurodh’ from 1977 made two. The film name ‘Taqdeer’ appeared twice in that week, albeit from different years – 1943 and 1967.

The decade of 1941-50 was represented by 11 songs, the decade of 1951-60 by 12 songs, the decade of 1961-70 by 17 songs, the decade of 1971-80 by eight songs, and the 80s and 90s were represented by one song each. And so 1960s was the prominent decade with almost 30% songs posted that week.

As many as 13 films made their debut this week, and yes, 3 films also got Yippeee’d already. All three films are from 1970s – ‘Amar Prem’ (1971), ‘Mili’ (1975) and ‘Anurodh’ (1977). Since that week was done, 18 more films that appeared in that week are Yippeee’d by now.

We had two major artist milestone also come up that week. Hasrat Jaipuri completed 300 appearances on the blog, on 12th November with the song “Tu Kyun Mujhko Pukaare” from the film ‘Mayur Pankh’. And then on the 13th, the 5000th post also celebrated the century of songs composed by Bulo C Rani.

Here is the week’s data in table form.

Since 13th November of 2011, after this iconic qawwaali was posted, just one more song from the film ‘Al Hi Lal’ has appeared on the blog. That song is “Amma Main Bada Hoke Bahut Kaam Karoongaa” which appeared on the blog on 29th July, 2017. Here is one more song from this film – a duet sung by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. This is a lilting melodious song af a lovers’ tete-a-tete – a typical running-around-the-tree love song. On screen, this song is lip synced by Mahipal and Shakila.

The song is written by Shewan Rizvi, music composed by Bulo C Rani. The lovers are complaining about stolen hearts, and are naming each other as the thief responsible for it. Apparently it seems that once the qawwaali became the big hit that it is, somehow the remaining songs got very little attention from the listeners. This song is a wonderful one in its own right, but not so well known. I too got to hear it for the first time as I was searching for other songs of this film.

Listen to this lovely duet, I am sure you will like it.

Song – Tum Ho Dil Ke Chor, Kare Dil Shor  (Al Hi Laal) (1958) Singer – Manna Dey, Suman Kalyanpur, Lyrics – Shewan Rizvi, MD – Bulo C Rani
Manna Dey + Suman Kalyanpur

Lyrics

tum ho dil ke chor
kare dil shor
tumhen pehchaan liya. . .
o ho ho haan
aaj khula ye raaz
hamaara raaz
kisi ne jaan liya

aa haan
tum ho dil ke chor
kare dil shor
tumhen pehchaan liya
aaj khula ye raaz
hamaara raaz
kisi ne jaan liya

bedard ne deke dard
kiya dil sard
nigaahen pher ke
teri chaah ne
dil ki aah ne loota
raah mein hamko gher ke
laakh bachaaya
bach nahin paaya
dil ye hamaara
tum par aaya
o ho ho haan
tum ho dil ke chor
kare dil shor
tumhen pehchaan liya
aaj khula ye raaz
hamaara raaz
kisi ne jaan liya

o mast nazar
jaata hai kidhar
ik teer sa dil pe maar ke
badnaam na ho
badnaam na kar
ilzaam na de bekaar ke
raaz hamaara
tu ne jaana
jaan na le
bedard zamaana
o ho ho haan
tum ho dil ke chor
kare dil shor
tumhen pehchaan liya
aaj khula ye raaz
hamaara raaz
kisi ne jaan liya

sharma ke na ja
tadpa ke na ja
iqraar to kar le pyaar ka
jab aankh jhuke
aur lab na hiley
ye matlab hai iqraar ka
neechi nigaahen
dil ki kahaani
pyaar ki hai ye
khaas nishaani
o ho ho haan
tum ho dil ke chor
kare dil shor
tumhen pehchaan liya
aaj khula ye raaz
hamaara raaz
kisi ne jaan liya

Blog Day :

4789 Post No. : 16546

Today’s song is from the ‘1963’ movie ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’.

I have in past written about how I find some songs which were embedded in my impressionable mind in the childhood, either because of watching some movies or listening the songs on Radio.

Today’s song is one such song.

I had in my earlier post here mentioned that I had watched this movie ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan-1963’ when I was growing and have forgotten it now.
But I was always remembering this movie’s title and couple of its songs, and I was always looking for them.
So last year when I presented a song from this movie, I also go through the list of the other songs from this movie just out of interest. I did not listen to the remaining songs then.

Now, deviating from today’s post a little, I would like to mention one other song also from a mythological movie that I was vaguely remembering was ‘shankar bhole
bhaale shail bihaari, dam dam dam dam dmru baaje, traahimaam, traahimaam’.

I was sure that I had watched the movie where this song was there in my growing years.

I was always looking for this song and the only thing I remember was Dara Singh playing the Shivji’s role.

Few years back this song ‘shankar bhole bhaale shail bihaari’ was posted on the blog on 07.03.2016. But this did not contain the words ‘traahimaam traahimaam’. Four years later I presented a song ‘bolo shiv shiv shambhu bam bam bam’ from the movie ‘Har Har Mahadev-1974’. It also didn’t contain the words ‘traahimaam traahimaam’. Then the ‘dam dam dam damru baje’ words were also not there, and I thought that I may have, in my growing years, mixed-up with songs from the above movies and with a song from ‘Shirdi Ke Sai Baba’ which is another movie I have a nostalgia associated with it. There is a song in this movie ‘Dam Dam Dam Dam Damru baje’.

Now we come back to today’s post. About a month back when ‘shraavan’ month was about to start I started looking suitable songs to share on the blog. Also, I was looking for movies where few songs were required to ‘Yippeeee’ them on the blog.

Normally during this period of the year (i.e. shraavan month and later Ganpati festival) I am always reminded of some mythological and other movies which I had watched when I was growing.

Last year around the same time I had presented a song from ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’. The song was posted on 07.08.2020. Whatever songs from this movie have been posted on the blog are good songs and I like them very much.

I was remembering that there is a ‘naag-devtaa’ song in this movie. I thought I would present it on ‘Naag Panchami’ and if not on that day, I would share it in this month of ‘shraavan’ at least.

So, I take a chance to listen remaining songs from this movie and came across the today’s song. And finally, I got this ‘traahimaam …’ which actually is ‘traahimaam
Paahimaam’ 😊

‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan-1963’ was directed by Babubhai Mistry for ‘Roopkalaa Pictures’. It was produced by Mahipatray Shah. It had Anita Guha, Mahipal, with Ramsingh, Krishnakumari, Kummo Tripathi, and Raja Nene. They were supported by Ratnamala, T.N. Sinha, Prakash, Yunus Parwez, Mridula, Punam Kapoor, Baijnath, Ajit, Rehana, Uma Dutt, R.S. Dube, Munshi, Shekhar, Chand, Devchand, Lal Bahadur, Kishore, Dilawar Khan, Baby Chand, Burhan, Jugal Kishore, Dinanath, Vijay Kumar and Master Aziz.

The story of this movie was written by Vishwanath Pande, C.K. Mast, Pandit Madhur, and S.M. Abbas.
Editing of this movie was done by Ramchandra Mahadik.

‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan-1963’ had nine songs, all written by Pandit Bharat Vyas. The music was composed by Pandit Shivaram.

Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Mahendra Kapoor had sung six solo songs in this movie and two of them have been posted on the blog so far. That gives us four solo songs more by Mahendra Kapoor to be posted on the blog.
Today we are going to listen one of them.

Manna Dey had sung one solo and Mukesh had one duet with Suman Kalyanpur which has also been posted on the blog. Suman Kalyanpur had solo song other than the duet with Mukesh which has also been posted on the blog.

Following is the list of the songs of this movie as appearing in the HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970).

S.No. Song Title Posted On
01 Sabko naach nachaane waala 24.11.2011
02 Bhagwaan Krishna ki amar kahaani
03 Jaa jaa jaa chhod de o chhaliyaa 07.08.2010
04 Apne piyaa ki main to bani re joganiya 25.10.2009
05 Bhaarat bhoomi mahaan hai
06 Ye duniya banaana aur banaa ke phir chalaana 07.08.2020
07 Nadiya na piye kabhi apna jal 15.05.2015
08 Ho o naag devtaa traahimaam paahimam Being presented today
09 Kan kan mein bhagwaan

As mentioned above today we listen to a song sung by Mahendra Kapoor which on screen is lip-synced by Mahipal (I have always loved watching him on the screen).

From the picturisation of the song I guess that the King’s (Yunus Parwez) son (Master Aziz) is very sick or maybe he has lost his life (because of snake-bite) and all efforts to revive him are failed. And so finally Mahipal is praying ‘Naag devtaa’ to bring back the child’s life. ‘Naag devtaa’ finally saves the child.

The video of this song is little longer and includes conversation which I have not included in the lyrics.

Let us now listen and enjoy one more song from ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan’.

(I would like to see this movie moving to ‘Yippeeee-land’ as early as possible 😊 )

Blog Day : 4468 Post No. : 15960

After a long gap, in which I discussed songs and films of the 1950’s for a few months, I am now returning to the decade of the 1940’s. I discussed songs from 25 films of the 1950’s with the last post coinciding with completion of my 8 years of writing posts on this popular Blog.

Today’s song is from a less known- rather an unknown- film, Adalat-1948. It was the first film with this title. This title was lated used by the more famous film Adalat-1958 and also in Adalat -1976.

This film was produced by Mangal Pictures. It was directed by Vasant Joglekar and the music was provided by Datta Davjekar, for songs written by Mahipal and Narendra Sharma. Yes, he is the same Mahipal who became a regular feature in 131 Hindi Stunt, Action, Costume, Historical and Mythological films. Incidentally, Adalat-48 was Mahipal’s last film as a Lyricist.

The cast of the film was Baburao Pendharkar (brother of Bhalji Pendharkar),Salvi, Jog, Madgulkar, Jaysingh, Saroj Borkar, Sudha Apte, Nalini Dhere, Shalini and Rajan (Jawale). The cast, MD, Director all singers except Mohd.Rafi were Marathi people. Most of them are unknown to Hindi audiences.

Jaysingh was the son of director Bhalji Pendharkar, from his first wife. From his second wife(Miss Leela aka Leela Chandragiri) he got another son Prabhakar. Combining the names of these two sons, Bhalji named his new studio “Jayprabha” at Kolhapur. During the riots against the Bramhins, after the murder of Gandhi, this studio was burnt, because Bhalji Pendharkar was a Brahmin. The studio was rebuilt. It was later purchased by Lata Mangeshkar, only to get embroiled in court cases with the Maharashtra Government, for a long time.

Actor Rajan (Jawle) was a Marathi actor. He is the person who lived with and looked after actress Hansa Wadkar in her later bad days in her life, till she died. Actress Nalini Dhere was a Marathi actress but had done few Hindi films like Nagad Narayan-43 etc. In Hindi film industry, at some or the other times, there were as many as 8 Nalini’s operating as actresses and singers – Nalini Tarkhad, Nalini Jaywant, Nalini Nagpurkar, Nalini Gupte, Nalini Dhere, Nalini Saraf (who became Seema Deo-wife of actor Ramesh Deo), Nalini Chonkar and Nalini Korgaonkar (singer-Jail Yatra-47).

Another actor Madgulkar was a great personality in Marathi literary field. Gajanan Digambar Madguḷkar (1 October 1919 – 14 December 1977) was a Marathi poet, lyricist, writer and actor. He was born in village Shetphal, Atpadi Taluka, Sangli district in Maharashtra. His family hailed from village Madgule in the same Taluka.

He is popularly known in his home state of Maharashtra by just his initials as Ga Di Ma (गदिमा). He was awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1951 and Padma Shri in 1969. He has written 157 screen plays and over 2000 songs in his career. He was called Adhunik Valmiki (the modern Valmiki) of the current era due to his composition of Geet Ramayan ( Ramayana in Songs) as the most notable work. 2019 was celebrated as his Birth Century year. Government of Maharashtra hosted various events and festivals to grace the occasion.

Madgulkar wrote poetry, short stories, novels, autobiographies and scripts, dialogues and lyrics for Marathi as well as Hindi movies. His poems have been adapted to a wide range of musical forms such as Sugam-Sangeet (light music), Bhawa-Geet (emotional songs), Bhakti-Geet (devotional songs), and Lawani (a genre of folk songs in Maharashtra). Madgulkar entered the world of movies in 1938 at Kolhāpur. He contributed to 157 Marathi and 25 Hindi movies. He was also an artist. He loved to draw nature scenes. Special mention must be made for the films, Jeewan Jyoti-53-S/play and dialogues, Toofan aur Diya-56- story, and Do aankhen barah haath-57-Story, S/play and dialogues.

A noteworthy fact about Madgulkar is that during his peak period in Marathi films, he created a World Record. He teamed up with Music Director Sudhir Phadke and director Raja Paranjape. Together, as a team, they gave a total of 11 Hit films,in a row in 18 years- from 1948 to 1966 … a record for a Team.

He had knowledge of 10 languages including Marathi, Hindi, English, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu.

Madgulkar was married to Vidya (Padma Patankar, Kolhapur) and they had 3 sons (Shridhar, Anand, Sharad Kumar) and 4 daughters (Varsha, Kalpalata, Deepa, Shubhada). The popular Marathi writer, Vyankatesh Madgulkar was his younger brother.

His home in Pune (‘Panchavati Bungalow’) has become a place of attraction for his fans.

In Hindi film industry, there were many name alikes. Some of them caused serious problems of ‘Same Name Confusion”. Artistes of the same name was a common phenomenon in early cinema i.e. the 30s and the 40s. Then it diminished slowly. This matter was not only common in actors, but in other categories also. As far as Music Directors are concerned, there were so many “Datta”s as MDs. Some of them at the same time and few causing the SNC syndrome too ! There were K.Datta, N.Datta, Narayan Dutta, D C. Dutta, Dattaram and Datta Davjekar. Each one contributed to HFM to his ability.

One of these music director’s name will be written in Golden Ink, in the History of HFM. That name is DATTA DAVJEKAR. This is because he helped an all time Legend LATA MANGESHKAR, by giving her the opportunity to sing her First PlayBack Hindi song in one of his films-“Aap ki sewa mein-1947.

Dattatreya Shankar Davjekar (Born on 15-11-1915 – died 19 September 2007), better known as Datta Davjekar or Datta Daujeker , was a veteran music composer mainly associated with Marathi and Hindi movies. He studied upto Matriculation in Nutan Marathi Vidyalay.

He started working from 1931 composing songs in Melas and later in Saraswati Cinetone. Assisted Sureshbabu Mane for film ” Nandkumar’-1937. Later he assisted Govindrao tembe in Natraj company. He was called to Bombay to record all Hindi and Marathi songs for film Savangadi in marathi and Saathi in Hindi in 1938. he first gave music to ‘Municipality’ made by Brilliant Pictures.

Datta Davjekar’s father Baburao used to play tabla for live folk musical plays as well as in Urdu plays. He used to work in Arya Subodh natak Mandali. He played Pakhawaz also.

Davjekar learned how to play tabla and harmonium and thus developed an interest in music. He also started composing songs. Later, he was invited by the famous star Shanta Apte to perform on her shows. Davjekar performed at places as far off as Allahabad and Lahore.

Davjekar assisted C. Ramachandra and Chitragupta for a while. His first break came in 1941 with a Marathi film called Municipality. It was followed by Sarkari Pahune in 1942. One of the film’s songs Naache Sangeet Natwar was a big hit. Davjekar went on to work with big names in Marathi cinema, like Raja Paranjape, Gajanan Jagirdar, Master Vinayak, Dinkar Patil, Datta Dharmadhikari, Rajdutt and Raja Thakur. In 1945, he joined HMV and composed several popular marathi Bhavgeet songs, writing them himself, like ‘Tuj swapni pahile’ and ‘ kuni bai gungunle’ etc. he was known as ‘ DD ‘.

His famous films include Rangalyaa Raatri Ashyaa, Paathlaag, Pahu Re Kitni Vaat, Thoraataanchi Kamlaa, Padchaaya, Chimanrao Gundyabhau, Pedgaonche Shahane, Juna Te Sona, Sant Vahate Krishna Mai, Sukhaachi Sawali, Viasakh Vanwaa and Yashoda. His last film release was Pahaate Punyechi in 1992. His non-film song “Sainik Ho Tumchyaa Saathi” (translation: For you, oh Soldiers) was a big hit and its sales proceeds went to the Armed Forces.

In a career spanning fiftytwo years, Davjekar composed music in several languages for sixty films, twelve plays and several documentaries. He learnt German music for composing music for the play Thank you, Mr Glad. He is credited for giving a break to many singers who became extremely popular over a period of time, including the Mangeshkar siblings, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosale and Usha Mangeshkar as well as others such as Anuradha Paudwal.

The film Maazhe Baal, released in 1943, was Davjekar’s first Marathi film with Lata Mangeshkar. He went on to introduce her to Hindi films with his song Paa Laagoo Kar Jori Re for the film Aap Ki Sewa Mein (1947).

Davjekar did four more Hindi films, Vasant Joglekar’s Adalat-48, Jeet Kiski-52,Premnath’s English-Hindi bilingual, Prisoner of Golconda-53, in which Sudha Malhotra sang, and Bal Shivaji-56 . He used to accompany Lata Mangeshkar on her foreign trips for music programmes as the chief arranger. He won Five awards for his music to Marathi films. In 1995 he was given “Lata Mangeshkar ” award, by Maharashtra Government.

On 19 September 2007 Davjekar died of a heart attack at his residence in Andheri, Mumbai.

An Obituary in One India dated 20th September 2007 says…

Family sources said Davjekar died of heart attack at his Andheri residence late last night. The funeral took place at the Oshiwara crematorium this morning and was attended by family, friends and admirers.

Condoling the death of Mr Davjekar, Lata Mangeshkar recollected that the late music composer had given her the first opportunity in playback singing in his movie “Aap Ki Seva Mein”. “Just like his music, he was a sweet human being,” Mangeshkar said.

His non-film song “Sainik Ho Tumchyaa Saathi” was a superhit and its sales proceeds went to the Armed Forces. Datta Davjekar also composed music for twelve plays including “Thank You Mr Glad” for which he learnt German music. In a career spanning more than six decades, he scored music for nearly 60 films. (Based on information from Wiki, One India, and Marathi Chitrapat Sangeetkar kosh, with thanks.)

I have not seen this film Adalat-48, but I know that this film was about a love marriage which went to the courts and ended happily. Today’s song is the 4th song on this Blog. It is a Rafi solo song. The prelude music and the tune suspiciously remind me of some songs, which I am not able to pinpoint right now. Maybe you will….

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part I: 1946-1947

Today (28 september 2020) is the 91st birthday of Swar Samragyi Lata Mangeshkar (DoB 28 September 1929). We as part of HFM lovers extend her a very happy birthday and wish her many happy returns of the day.

She has been the most influential singer of HFM (and by extension all Indian film music).

A lot has been written on her career and her songs and her life. Instead of joining that race and repeating the already much repeated facts about her, I would take this occasion to stat my discussion of her HF songs yearwise, right from the beginning. So one can see that it is going to be a long series, which may have started on her birthday and it will contunue on and on, and each post will discuss one year. She has been around for more than six decades. It will take me at least 40 posts, may be more to discuss her songs over the years. I plan to publish one article every year. At this rate, this series could take upto one year. But then what is one year for this blog which is going on for more than 12 years !

This writeup, which is part I takes up the years 1946 and 1947. Why two years ? Because this series will discuss a Lata Mangeshkar song from the year under discussion. Lata Mangeshkar made her debut in 1946 but all songs sung by her in 1946 are already covered in the blog. 1947 is the second year for her HFM career. Here just one song sung by her remains undiscussed. So I had to take up the year 1947 as well so that I could discuss a song of the year with the article.

Coming to 1946, here are the details of the songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in HFM in 1946:-

Movie Music director Lata song in the blog Lata HFM songs in the year Lata solo songs Male duet Female duet Other songs Lyricists Song detail
Jeewan Yaatra Vasant Desai 1 1 1 0 0 0 Dewar Sharar Chidiya boley choon choon choon
Sona Chaandi D C Dutt 1 1 1 0 0 0 Wali Sahab Pyaare Bapu ke charnon ki le lo prasann
Subhadra Vasant Desai 2 2 2 0 0 0 Pt Sudarshan (1) Pt Indra (1) Piya aayegaa…gori sudh na bisaar piya aayegaa Pt Indra Chandra
Saanwariya oye baansuriya oye bajaaye gayo re Pt Sudarshan
Total Three movies Two music directors 4 4 4 0 0 0 Four lyricists All solos

The next year 1947, which was an important year for the country saw Lata Mangeshkar faring more or less how she had fared the previous year, as can be seen from the table below :-

Movie Music director Lata song in the blog Lata HFM songs in the year Lata solo songs Male duet Female duet Other songs Lyricists Song detail
Aap Ki Sewa Mein Datta Dawjekar 2 3 3 0 0 0 Mahipal Paa laagoon kar joree re
Ek naye rang mein dooje umang mein
Shaadi Se Pehle Pt Ramakant Paingankar-Karnad 1 1 0 1 0 0 Pt Mukhram Sharma Chalo ho gayi taiyyar Duet with Rafi
Shehnaai C Ramchandra 1 1 0 0 0 1 P L Santoshi Jawaani ki rail chali jaaye re with Chitalkar and Geeta Dutt as co singers
Total Three movies Three music directors 4 5 3 1 0 1 Three lyricists Three solos, plus her first male duet and first multiple singers song

If someone had done an year end analysis of Lata Mangeshkar’s career prospects at the end of 1947, he would have written off her chances as a playback singer. Such an analyst would have lots of facts backing his judgement. Lata Mangeshkar had a thin feeble voice, unlike the buland voices of the predominantly Punjabi female singers of those days. Forget laypersons, even a few studio owners, such as Filmistan’s boss rejected Lata’s voice outright, despite the recommendations of music director like Ghulam Haider. If one had to give opportunities to a new voice, then Geeta Roy showed far more promise. Unlike Lata, who was struggling on family and career fronts, Geeta Roy was getting her breaks almost without much struggle. And her voice was loved by all prominent music directors and movie producers.

So, Lata Mangeshkar did not have it easy in her career. She has faced lots of hardships. She has overcome them all. Moreover, she stood for her rights, took on powerful influential individuals in the induustry and got her way. Not just that, she survived and outlived them all.

Many people, with the benefit of hindsight may think that Lata Mangeshkar had a smooth career in film industry. Not at all. She has survived lots and lots of hardships that would have destroyed lesser mortals. One forgotten fact is that an attempt was made to poison her. It was a tactic that was earlier used against Master Madan in 1940s. Lata Mangeshkar’s enemies had planted a cook in her residence who was slowly poisoning her meals. It was an incident of early 1960s. The matter was detected in time and the cook ran away.

Her detractors accuse her of sabotaging the careers of some of her contemporaries. I think this accusation has an element of exxagaration. Even in the prime of her career, there were lots and lots of movies where she did not sing. She would typically sing songs in 50 odd movies in a year out of 100 odd movies released in that year. If these contemporaries were as good as they thought, they had enough opportunities to get work in the movies where Lata Mangeshkar did not sing. It takes far more than just raw singing ability to get work and get repeated. It takes lots of social networking which Lata Mangeshkar was good at. A few of her contemporaries known to be regarded as her competitors did not possess even a fraction of the networking abilities that Lata and her equally illustrious younger sister Asha Bhonsle possessed.

My observation about Lata Mangeshkar is that she was like an iceberg, and only the tip of her abilities were used in HFM. And even that has resulted into a body of work that is quite formidable.

One can see from the above two tables that Lata Mangeshkar was a struggler for most of the 1940s and she had very little to show for her struggles by the end of 1947. Lots and lots of things happened thereafter. She has the luck and the ability to turn it around spectacularly in the years to come. We will look at these facts in details in the future posts of this series.

It has been mentioned above that all Lata songs of 1946 have been covered in the blog. The table for 1947 shows that one Lata song from 1947 remains uuncovered. The song under discussion is that remaing song.

“Aap Ki Sewa Mein”(1947) was directed by Vasant Joglekar for Chandrma Pictures Bombay. This obscure movie had Dixit, Kesri, Shantarin, Saroj Borkar, Nimbalkar, Smson, D R Gokhale, Bhal Marathe, Vijaya, Baby Nalini etc in it. The movie had eight songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Lata Mangeshkar had sung three solos in the movie. Two of these songs have been covered in the blog in the past.

Here is the third and final Lata solo from “Aap Ki Sewa Mein”(1947) to appear in the blog. The song is penned by Mahipal (later a hero of mythological movies). Music is composed by Datta Davjekar.

Listening to the voice in this song, one can notice the influence of Suraiyya in her voice, who was a leading female playback singer of those days.

With this song, all the Lata Mangeshkar HFM songs of 1947 have now got covered in the blog.

In the next instalment of this series, we will discuss Lata Mangeshkar HFM songs sung by her in Hindi movies released in 1948.

“Adalat” (1948) was directed by Vasant Joglekar for Mangal Pictures Production, Bombay. The movie had Baburao Pendharkar, Shalini Devi, Jog Madgulkar, Sudha Apte, Saroj Borkar etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it. Two song has been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Adalat” (1948) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi. Mahipal (later known as an actor) is the lyricist. Music is composed by Datta Davjekar. I must say the lyrics of Mahipal are quite impressive in this melancholic song.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of the song.

Song-Kismat to dekho (Adalat)(1948) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Mahipal, MD-Datta Davjekar

4411 Post No. : 15808

Today is 15th August, 2020 and we are celebrating 74rd Independence day. A national festival in COVID times, when all the festivals and celebrations have been kept low key and confined to own dwellings, very small gatherings or on the modern wonders of 21st century whatsapp and video conferences. But these small mercies have also been marred by the casualties. Most painful is the inability to visit the sick and not go the two steps distance towards the final rites of those who have lost this battle.

This past 6 months, we have all come to realize what really matters. Our family, friends and our inherent capacity to be happy and content, is the takeaway for us at the end of this. Surely, there is light at the end of this tunnel.

It has been 73 years since we have gained or wrested our freedom from a foreign power. A power, which still relishes its successes and spoils from the conquering and subduing of this ancient land of the Rishi Munis and sufi saints and great thinkers and poets. There is a saying “United we stand and divided we fall”. But here we are celebrating the event of the division of an ancient civilization. Over these 73 years and even before with the two world wars, we have seen elsewhere how those superpowers and their brethren create, fight and finish their unholy wars. Be it annihilation of Japan or the systematic destruction of Iraq(twice over), and the dismantling of the ‘khilaafat’ in Turkey, we in the end got free lightly, only with the three way division of the sub-continent and the loss of a few million lives in the cross migration or exchange of population, or whatever. Everything comes at a cost, and we, some would say have paid it. There is a very good reason for the tag of ‘sub-continent’ to this region of Hindustan. These are some things to ponder over.

The song I have chosen to present here is “Desh mein sankat aaya hai” from “Aap ki sewa mein” (1947). The song obviously of pre-independance era, as it ends with “Chheen lo , chheen lo ……..” . Meaning ‘Azaadi chheen lo”. Otherwise the lyrics are mainly about food shortages, or maybe it is talking about famine, in Bihar or Bengal.

By and large, our country is free of such fears, at least in matters of food. Initially with the extended lockdown, there were apprehensions everywhere, especially in the elderly. They were not totally unfounded with the transportation and all activity at the standstill, there is always a chance of things going horribly bad. But the bureaucratic vigilance and diligence at every step of the way saved the day for India. Indian bureaucracy, however maligned as “babus” is a fine institution so is the distribution network of resources and essentials, that much has been proved. We take these institutions for granted, until they are threatened, look to be losing significance. Only then we acknowledge what it was and what we lost.

Despite these apprehensions, all was fine at least in Mumbai. But one thing I could not find in my 3 visits to the supermarket, i.e. the humble ‘safed watana’ 🙂 .

Here is a bonus, a poem by Sahir Ludhianvi :

Out of the six movies represented as above we have only two movies eligible for the ‘Blog Ten-Year Challenge’ today viz. ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan-1963’ and ‘Dulhan-1958’.

When our dear Prakash ji sent the lyrics for the today’s song it reminded me that I had watched this movie ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan-1963’ during my growing years in mid-late seventies.

This movie was screened during the weekly movie-screening at the ‘recreation club’ building of the colony we were staying then. Movies like ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere-1957’, ‘Sant Gyaneshwar-1964’ etc were some of the movie I got to watch during those days.

Though I do not remember the story of this movie ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan-1963’ now, remembering a few of its songs was no problem as they were embedded in my memory.Recalling these songs and reliving the nostalgia of actor Mahipal’s movies’ during the preparation of this post brought back memories of watching those black and white movies during my childhood days.

This movie had some nice melodious songs and its music was highly enjoyable.

‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan-1963’ had nine songs, all written by Bharat Vyas. The music was composed by Pandit Shivaram. Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Mukesh and Suman Kalyanpur had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Mahendra Kapoor had sung six solo songs in this movie and only one of them have posted on the blog so far. That gives us five solo songs by Mahendra Kapoor to be posted on the blog. Today we are going to listen one of them.

Manna Dey had sung one solo and Mukesh had one duet with Suman Kalyanpur which has also been posted on the blog. Suman Kalyanpur had solo song other than the duet with Mukesh which has also been posted on the blog.

Following are the four songs from this movie that have been posted on the blog;

Song-Ye duniya banaana aur banaake phir chalaana (Kan Kan Mein Bhagwaan)(1963) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-Pt Shivram

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

ye duniya banaana
aur banaa ke phir chalaana
bas usi kaa kaam hai
badaa zordaar us ka intzaam hai
ho o badaa zabardast us ka intzaam hai
raat ko hi raat
parbhaat ko parbhaat
shaam hi ko shaam hai
badaa zordaar uska intzaam hai
ho o badaa zabardast uska intzaam hai
ye duniya banaana
aur banaa ke phir chalaana
bas usi ka kaam hai
badaa zordaar uska intzaam hai
ho o badaa zabardast uska intzaam hai

jal pe hai thhal aur thhal pe aasmaan hai
phir bhi ek dooje pe na bojh ke samaan hai
jal pe hai thhal aur thhal pe aasmaan hai
phir bhi ek dooje pe na bojh ke samaan hai
ghazab ka ye jahaan hai
bin khambe ka makaan hai ae
ghazab ka ye jahaan hai
bin khambe ka makaan hai
jahaan ka ek ek kan us ka ghulaam hai
badaa zordaar uska intzaam hai
ho o badaa zabardast uska intzaam hai
ye duniya banaana
aur banaa ke phir chalaana
bas usi kaa kaam hai
badaa zordaar us ka intzaam hai
ho o badaa zabardast us ka intzaam hai

surya chandra taare apne dharm se naa tal sake
insaan ki majaal kya
jo uskaa kram badal sake
surya chandra taare apne dharm se naa tal sake
insaan ki majaal kya
jo uska kram badal sake
ik phool bhi khiley nahin ik patta bhi hiley nahin
ik phool bhi khiley nahin ik patta bhi hiley nahin
saare jahaan ki uske haath mein lagaam hai
badaa zordaar uska intzaam hai
ho o badaa zabardast uska intzaam hai
ye duniya banaana
aur banaa ke phir chalaana
bas usi ka kaam hai
badaa zordaar us ka intzaam hai
ho o badaa zabardast us ka intzaam hai

rath ye chaley nahin…een

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 33
—————————————————————————

When I look back at 2010, the blog posting rate was surprisingly similar to the post rate of 2020. Every day one or two posts appeared during 2010. The blog clocked around 60 odd posts per month. Same is happening even in 2020.

Coming to this date 10 years ago, viz 3 june 2010, two posts were discussed in the blog as below :-

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Tere binaa zindagi se koi shikwa nahin Aandhi (1975) All songs covered
Mil ke bhi ham mil na sake

Sunahri Naagin (1963) 07 of 08 songs posted

“Sunahri Naagin-1963” was directed by Babubhai Mistry for Everest Pictures, Bombay. Its story and screenplay were by Pt Madhur and Vishwanath Pandey. Dialogues were by C K Mast. It was a fantasy movie which had Mahipal, Helen, Sulochana, Anwar Hussain, Sapru, Priti Bala aka Zeb Rehman, Ulhas, Paul Sharma, Jeevankala, Bela Bose, Madhumati, Sheela Kashmiri, Kamal Mehra etc in it.

When I was going through the above, I thought that I was going through the credits of “Parasmani”(1963). Both movies were created by the same team, and even the star cast had much in common. Mahipal was the hero in both the movies, Here in ‘Sunahri Naagin'(1963), we have Helen in female lead instead of Geetanjali.

“Sunahri Naagin”(1963) had eight songs in it. Seven songs have been covered in the past. Here are the details of the seven songs covered in the blog:-

S N Song Post number in blog Date of posting
1 Been na bajaana jaadu na jagaanaa 2342 12-March-2010
2 Tu hi tu hai main dekhaa karoon 2345 14-March-2010
3 Chhedoge mujhko agar jaan ke 2449 16-March-2010
4 Mil ke bhi ham mil na sake 2511 3-June-2010
5 Main to ho gayi re badnaam 14495 16-July-2018
6 Yoon na akadiye yoon na bigadiye 15482 16-March-2020
7 Donon haathhon se dil kyun sambhaala hai 15493 24-March-2020

From the table, it can be seen that the movie made its debut in march 2010 and I discussed three songs from the movie in that month. Another song was discussed in june 2010. Then this movie was not taken up again in the blog for eight years.

This year, two songs have been discussed and one of these two songs was a Blog Ten Year Challenge song.

Today, another blog ten year challenge opportunity presents itself. On this occasion, here is this lovely song from “Sunahri Naagin”(1963). It is sung by Mukesh and Lata. The song is picturised on Mahipal and Helen. This song appears to be the song corresponding to Chori chori jo tumse mili to log kyaa kahenge of “Parasmani”(1963).

Not only are the singers same in the two songs, even the lyricist 9Farooque Kaiser is the same. Parasmani had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Here Kalyanji Anandji are the music director. Though HFGK is silent about the assistant music directors, it appears to me that Laxmikant Pyarelal may have been the assistant music director in this movie. I can notice Laxmikant Pyarelal stamp in this song.

It is a lovely song to listen to. Its lyrics and details were sent jointly by Prakashchandra and Avinash Scrapwala. Prakashchandra gave valuable background information on this movie whereas Avinash Scrapwala was the catalyst behind this Blog Ten Year Challenge Post.

With this song, all the eight songs of “Sunahri Naagin”(1963) are covered and the movie joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEEED in the blog. I notice that “Parasmani”(1963) too had been YIPPEED with its equivalent song viz Chori chori jo tumse mili to log kyaa kahenge . Such coincidences occur in the blog all the time.

हर सांस में शोला तडपे है
हर गीत में दिल की धड़कन है

आँखों में नशा सा छाया है

Blog Day : 4016 Post No. : 15123

“Naag Mohini”(1963) was directed by Shantilal Soni for Dimple Films Bombay. This “pauraaanik” movie had Vijaya Chadhary, Mahipal, Sundar, Rajan Haksar, Bablu, Uma Dutt, Indira Bansal, Rajrani, Sood, Khursheed etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Two of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from “Naag Mohini”(1963) to appear in the blog. the song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Rafi. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sardar Malik.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song. It is almost certain though that the song must have been picturised on the lead pair of Vijaya Chaudhary and Mahipal.
