When new actors are to be introduced in lead roles in Bollywood movies, they are normally introduced in love stories. In most such cases, the hero tends to be the producer’s son and the heroine is a newcomer, or vice versa.
The love stories show the parents of the lead actors dead against the duo seeing each other. A few songs and dances and a climax scene later, all is well and the lead actors live happily ever after.
But such love stories in 1990s became more and more unrealistic. It was no longer a case of the two sets of parents opposing the alliance. In these movies the entire villages/ communities of the two actors would be sworn enemies of each other for generations. In real life, such love affairs are doomed to failure and so these bollywood movies showing the lead actors reforming their entire village/ community with their true love , making them forget their generations old enmity, is highly unrealistic and the reality is far more grim. So there is no way in hell that I can bring myself to appreciate and enjoy the love stories of 1990 with such unrealistic story lines.
“Saudaagar” (1991), which was a multi starrer, introduced Vivek Mushran and Manisha Koirala is such roles. And it is for the above mentioned reasongs that I could not bring myself to like the movie as well as its songs.
The songs of 1990s were no longer based on high class profound lyrics. The songs of this movie were quite low brow and yet popular.
Here is one of the most popular songs from this movie. This song uses the threee letter abbreviation of “I Love You” viz I L U and the entire song is built around this TLA.
Anand Bakshi, who has written countless great songs in his four decades long career came up with this song which may not have stretched his lyrical prowess to much. And Laxmikant Pyarelal, who came up with counless memorable tunes in their equally long career, creating this song may have been just another song for them.
This song caught the imagination of the public ( except mine) and this song went on to become very popular.
The song is a very long song ( 9 minutes long). It is sung by Manhar Udhas, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sukhwinder Singh and chorus. The song is picturised on almost the entire star cast of the movie which includes Vivek Mushran, Manisha Koirala, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kumar, Anupam Kher, Deepti Nawal etc. Incidentally Vivek Mushran and Manisha Koirala did not have any Bollywood connections. Manisha Koirala though was from an influential political family of Nepal, what with her relative B P Koirala being a leading politician in Nepal (who has been Nepali PM several times).
