Ruke ruke se qadam

Posted on: May 13, 2010

I thought that I had posted most songs of “Mausam” here. When I checked up yesterday, I was surprised to find that I had only posted one song from this movie.

Considering that this movie is full of beautiful songs, I need to quickly make amends and start posting the remaining songs of this movie. Here is this song “ruke ruke se qadam ruk ke baar baar chale” from this movie. It is a beautifully written ghazal (by Gulzar). It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Sharmila Tagore. Madan Mohan (King of Ghazals in Lata’s opinion) is the music director.

What a nice and lovely song it is. But then we can say that for a large number of songs composed by Madan Mohan.

Song-Ruke ruke se qadam(Mausam )(1975) Singer-Lata , Lyrics-Gulzar ,MD-Madan Mohan

Lyrics

ruke ruke se kadam
ruk ke baar baar chale
ruke ruke se kadam
ruk ke baar baar chale
qaraar leke tere dar se beqaraar chale
ruke ruke se kadam
ruk ke baar baar chale
ruke ruke se kadam

subah naa aayi
kayi baar neend se jaage
subah naa aayi
kayi baar neend se jaage
ki ek raat ki ye zindagi guzaar chale
ki ek raat ki ye zindagi guzaar chale
ruke ruke se kadam

uthaaye phirte the ehsaan dil kaa seene par
uthaaye phirte the ehsaan dil kaa seene par
le tere kadmon mein
ye karz bhi utaar chale
le tere kadmon mein
ye karz bhi utaar chale
qaraar leke tere dar se beqaraar chale
ruke ruke se kadam
ruk ke baar baar chale
ruke ruke se kadam

Mubarak Begum sang, more or less, the same song (Mukhada and the last antara are common) in a Bengali film ‘Laal Pathore’ (1964). Obviously, the song was written by Gulzar which was set to music by Salil Chowdhury. Probably, the song was used for a mujra dance. Listen to the song set to music in a different style:

Thank you sir, for sharing this link of a different rendition which is older than the ‘Mausam’ song and also longer with additional couplets.

The additional couplets are a bit away from Gulzar sahab’s usual style. He was also not very active in hindi films in 1964, i think.

FIRST of all, Ruke Ruke Se Quadam is NOT written by Gulzar Sa’ab (and I am a big fan of his). It is written by the immortal Mirza Ghalib! The song was first picturised in the Bengali film ‘Lal Pathor’ (music Salil da) in 1964. You can find it in YouTube. In the Hindi movie by the same name (Raj Kumar, Hema Malini, Vinod Mehra) you can hear it again in one of the scenes where it plays in the background!

Dil Dhoondta Hai is also written by Mirza Ghalib.
Gulzar Sa’ab has changed some of the words and presented an easy to understand version. But for HEAVEN’s SAKE, let’s stop attributing these two fantastic ghazals to Gulzar Sa’ab! Let’s say, penned by the one and only Mirza Ghalib, and presented to the public by Gulzar Sa’ab in his beautiful way.
