I find that there are many songs that I love listening to without having an inkling about their details. And with time getting the details of these songs becomes a problem in case that movie does not do well at the box office.

It was in 1960s that Indians were first treated to views of countries outside India and the Indian audiences were left gasping at the sight of the world, viz Japan, Europe etc and the progress that they had made vis a vis India left a lasting mpression in Indian minds, not that it led to any progress or introspection among Indians. They were just happy to enjoy these foreign locales on the movie screens.

Till 1960s and 1970s, most households in India compulsorily had a few photos and calenders hanging from their walls. One category was that of were religious photos and calenders, and then other category was that of national leaders. It may be difficult or impossible for the present generation to today imagine that most households in India equated national leaders with Gods. In 1950s and 1960s,in every Indian household, one could see photographs of Mahatma Gandhi (Father of the nation), Rajendra Prasad (First President of India) and Jawaharlal Nehru (First Prime Minister of India). Then some people also had a few more photographs of a few more important leaders, viz Sardar Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose etc.

“Guide” (1965) is a landmark movie in more ways than one.Its music was ethereal, and the industry insiders (singers, lyricists, music directors etc) voted this movie as musically the best Hindi movie of all times. Listening to the songs of this movie, one can see why. The songs of this movie has cast a magical spell over its listeners right from the time they became available some 45 years ago, and that magic spell continues even today, even across generations.

It was on 31st July 1980 that Rafi left us for heavenly abode and the music world was suddenly a much poorer place. The vacuum that was created as a result of his demise could not be filled and that vacuum exists even today.
