Balam dheere bol koi sun legaa

In the past, I have discussed a couple of songs from “Basant” (1942) which is quite an important movie in the annals of Hindi movies, because this movie introduced Madhubala, who then was a young kid and was credited as baby Mumtaz.
Ulhas and Mumtaz Shanti played Madhubala’s parents. I have not watched the movie, rather I try to guess the story of movies from its songs. I guess that Ulhas and Mumtaz Shanti are drama performers and they drama company performs in various places and later their daughter (Madhubala) too joins then in performing on stage.
Here is a song in which UlhasMumtaz Ali and Mumtaz Shanti Pramila are shown performing on stage. This is a song that is sung by Parul Ghosh Amirbai Karnataki and Arun Kumar. P L Santoshi is the lyricist. Pannalal Ghosh, husband of Parul Ghosh who later on became a legendary Bansuri player is credited as the music director, though it is largely believed that it was Anil Biswas (brother of Parul Ghosh and brother in law of Pannalal Ghosh) who had actually composed the music for this movie.
PS-The actors are Mumtaz Ali and Pramila. I thank Mr Sami for pointing it out and Mr Vidur Suri for seconding that. Also, the female singer is Amirbai Karnataki.
Here is this song which is sung in the singing style of 1942. The audio quality is amazingly clear and it is a pleasure watching a song picturised as early as 1942.

Sami Ji is right. And the female singer is Amirbai Ji, not Parul Ji. In the last stanza, what you have mentioned as ‘tankha’ is actually tankhwaah’, and ‘do din ke nau aane wali’ should be ‘do sikke nau aanewali’. Great job, keep it up.

Atul ji,
As per a note in HFGK,Pannalal Ghosh had given the background music and done the orchestration only.The music has been given by ANIL BISWAS according to AB himself. So the MD’s name should be Anil Biswas and NOT Pannalal Ghosh.

Yes. But due to a contract of only limited number of films per annum, Anil Ji’s name was not mentioned and Pannalal Ji’s was instead.

Please note that the actors are Mumtaz Ali (Mehmoods father) and Pramila performing on stage and NOT Ulhas or Mumtaz Shanti
