Today’s song is the last and final song from the murder mystery/ Crime story film-Mujrim-1970. HFGK lists this film as a ‘Stunt’ film.
The film was made by producer S.P.Suri for Shankar Films, Bombay. It was directed by Kewal Mishra. Charandas Shokh wrote the story, Dialogues and the Screenplay. The music was by Sonik-Omi duo. The cast included Joy Mukherjee, Kumud Chhugani, Dev Kumar, Jayant, Heeralal, Rajan Haksar, Jayashree T., Ramesh Deo and many others. Lyricists were Verma Malik and Hasrat Jaipuri.
This was an ordinary crime story with a predictable ending. Such films do not make a lasting impression on the audience.
The first ‘Mujrim’ film was made in1944 and then came 3 more ,in 1958, 2970 and 1989. Among them the most entertaining was the 1958 film with Shammi Kapoor and O.P.Nayyar combination. This film had suspense and good music too !
This is what I had written about today’s film in 2012, as my comments from my notes….
MUJRIM-1970 was an ordinary film with a highly predictable story and average music. This is a story of Gopal who is an ace driver having won Gold medals in car races.
One day when he is driving along, he sees a girl being forced by few criminals.He rushes to help her.During the fight,the girl disappears and Gopal drives on,when he is followed and arrested by Police for murdering Deepak,one of the goons in the incident.Deepak is the brother of dreaded criminal Gangaram(Jayant) serving in jail.
Learning about Deepak’s death,Gangaram escapes from the jail to avenge brother’s death.Meanwhile Gopal also escapes from Police van and takes shelter in a Goa bound truck,owned by Ganga singh(Dev Kumar) and his sister,Manju Singh(Kumud Chhgani).With police and Gangaram chasing him Gopal and Manju fall in love and sing love songs too to reduce their tension.
After reaching Goa, Gangaram kidnaps Manju. Gopal suddenly finds Saloni(Nishi) the girl who had disappeared and who is eyewitness to the real murderer of Deepak.Now Saloni,Gangasingh and Gopal together rescue Manju and hand over Gangaram to police.
The Heroine of this film was Kumud Chhugani- a Sindhi well educated girl. From time to time,girls from the Sindhi community appeared in Hindi films. There was Sheila Ramani, known for her film Funtoosh-1956-with Dev Anand, in the 50’s. Then came Sadhana Shivdasani in the 60’s and 70’s, who made her unique Hairstyle famous as’ Sadhana Cut’, which reminded us of the Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn and her famous film ‘The Roman Holiday’-1953, with Gregory Peck. Poonam ki Raat-1965 was the debut movie of KUMUD CHHUGANI.
Kumud Chhugani was an accomplished classical dancer,who had won a trophy from Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963 youth festival at Delhi.She was a talented actress too.She acted in 18 films in a span of 20 years.Her heroes were like,Dharmendra,Bishwajit,Joy Mukherjee,Rajendra Kumar,Manoj Kumar,Sanjay Khan etc.Her last film was Karmayudh-1985.
She acted in several Hindi and Gujarati plays also. After retirement,she is helping her husband in his Interior Decoration business in Mumbai.
Kumud Chhugani ( 25-8-1945 to 28-7-2020 )was a well-known Bollywood actress during the 1960s and 1970s. While detailed information about her childhood is scarce, she is reported to have been born in Sindh, now part of Pakistan, on August 25, 1945, into a Sindhi-speaking Hindu family. She pursued her education up to a B.A. degree. From a young age, she showed a keen interest in dance and acting and went on to receive formal training in Kathak dance.
In 1965, director Kishore Sahu introduced her as the heroine in his film Poonam Ki Raat. Although she did not achieve major success as a lead actress in Bollywood, she showcased her talent in many films as a supporting actress. Some of her notable films include Ladla, Shart, Hamara Adhikar, and Aaj Ka Mahatma.
Over the course of her career, she appeared in nearly 21 films, with Resham Ki Dori believed to be her last. She later married Satya Prakash Rishi, though the couple had no children.
She grew up living in Navjeevan Colony, Mahim Mumbai where she learnt and practiced her dance. She acted as Dharmendra’s sister in “Resham ki Dori” and featured in the song ” Behna ne bhai ki kalai se pyar bandha hai”. Also with Amitabh Bachchan in Bandhe Haath, Rajesh Khanna in Prem Nagar, Sanjay Khan in Shart etc. In the 1970s she lived on 16th road Bandra.
Bollywood Actress from Sindhi Family, an Honors graduate and a Kathak dancer, Kumud was introduced and had her break in Kishore Sahu’s Poonam Ki Raat (1965). Sahu had signed her exclusively for three years and Kumud was obliged to refuse several good offers soon after the film’s release. That affected her film career and with the contract over, she had to start afresh and was seen in films like Laadla, Vaasna, and Shart.
One of the actors in the cast was Ramesh Deo. Ramesh Deo (30 January 1929 – 2 February 2022) was an actor who worked in more than 285 Hindi films, 190 Marathi films and 30 Marathi dramas with over 200 showings in his long career. He also produced feature films, television serials and over 250 ad films. He directed a number of films, documentaries and television serials. He Received Filmfare Marathi Lifetime Achievement Award For His Contribution in Marathi Cinema.
Ramesh Deo was born in Kolhapur, Maharashtra on 30 January 1929. His ancestral roots are from a Rajput family of Jodhpur (Rajasthan). His father was a judge of Kolhapur. His ancestors shifted to Kolhapur as his great-grandfather and grandfather were both engineers. They built the Jodhpur Palace and were called by Chatrapati Shahu Maharaja to build the city of Kolhapur. His grandfather came down to become the chief engineer to Shahu Maharaj, and his father was his legal advisor.
He made his film debut with a cameo appearance in Patlachi Por, a Marathi film, in 1951. Andhala Magto Ek Dola (1956), directed by Raja Paranjape, was his first full-fledged role. He started off as a villain. His first Hindi film was Rajshree Productions’ Aarti (1962). In his long career, he has played supporting roles in films with Rajesh Khanna in lead, namely – Anand, Joroo Ka Ghulam, Aap Ki Kasam, Prem Nagar, Ashanti, Goraa. He has played supporting roles in Mehrbaan, Dus Lakh, Raampur Ka Lakshman, Fakira, Shatrughan Sinha starrer Mere Apne and many more.
In January 2013, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 11th Pune International Film Festival (PIFF). He worked in Nivdung, a Marathi serial in the year 2006. Deo was married to Seema Deo, an actress formerly known as Nalini Saraf. His sons are Marathi actor Ajinkya Deo and Abhinay Deo, director of the 2011 film Delhi Belly. He died at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital from a heart attack on 2 February 2022, at the age of 93.
Ramesh featured in more than 250 Hindi films and nearly 200 Marathi movies in his career spanning 60 years. He is known for films such as Anand and Aap Ki Kasam in Hindi cinema and his extensive work in the Marathi film industry, He was known for his unassuming screen presence, playing varied roles–from friendly doctor, menacing villain to a loveable family friend. He brought on-screen with him his affable trademark moustache and smile, which would either charm the audience or instill fear, depending on the role he played.
In the mid-60s, he turned towards Hindi cinema. He largely appeared as a character actor playing both positive and negative parts, including Aarti, Anand, Aap Ki Kasam, Mere Apne, Jeevan Mrityu, Saraswatichandra, Teen Bahuraniyan, Khilona, Ghayal Once Again, Jolly LLB, among others. The actor straddled several movie eras with ease, from Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna to Amitabh Bachchan. In filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1971 classic Anand, Ramesh played Dr Prakash Kulkarni, starring alongside his actor wife Seema Deo. The couple played on-screen as a pair in the film.
