Multi starrer movies became a norm in Hindi movies in a big way in 1975 when “Sholay” (1975) came up. In the wake of its mega success, many multi starrer movies followed.
But “Sholay” (1975) was by no means the first multi starrer movie in Hindi cinema. The first multi starrer was “Kismat” (1943) which was a grand success at the box office. Two decades later, “Waqt” (1965) was created. “Waqt” (1965) in fact not only provided inspirations for multi starrers movies of 1970s, it also provided a story line for such movies. “Waqt”(1965) was a lost and found movie on a grand scale. In this movie, an earthquake takes place and Balraj Sahni gets separated from his wife and three sons. All of them lead their separate lives and are unable to recognise each other despite coming in contact with each other on numerous occasion. Indeed, this story line has been an obvious inspiration for Manmohan Desai’s “Amar Akbar Anthony” (1977).
And it goes without saying that great music was also a big selling point of multi starrer movies, be it “Kismat” (1943), “Waqt” (1965) or the movies that followed subsequently. In fact, quite a few of “Waqt” (1965) songs have gone on to become iconic songs that have influenced people in more ways than one. For example the song Ae meri zohra jabeen changed the mindsets of Indians and made it sociaaly acceptable for middle aged and old men to sing love songs for their spouses in social gatherings. And the other song from this movie, viz. Aage bhi jaane na tu continues to be one of the most popular songs of its genre in clubs.
I find that I have discussed only three songs from “Waqt” (1965) so far. I need to discuss the other songs as well, because all songs from this movie are great songs.
Here is a get together song from this movie. we find Sadhana seated on a piano and singing this song, while guests, viz Raj Kumar etc arrive. The song is sung with gusto by Asha Bhonsle. Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics are superb as always. And Ravi, an underestimated music director for most (but not for me) comes up with another iconic song. Not for nothing do I describe Ravi as the creator of iconic songs.
Sadhana, on whom this song is picturised looks stunning. In 1960s, she was the most attractive and happening actress in the film industry. Her hairstyle which was called Sadhana cut, was a rage among ladies. I do not think any other actress ever had that kind of fan following for her hair style.
If one looks at the picturisation, she is not just seated at the piano for show. She actually seems to know what keys to press at what time. And that makes the picturisation appear even more authentic.

I am sure that it is a typographical error.
While describing arrival of guests,it should be RAJKUMAR and not Raj Kapoor.
