Main to chaloon paschim poorab chaley duniyaa

on:In Hindi movies, singing songs is a privilege of the lead actors, and they sing at least half a dozen songs, including romantic songs.
But there are exceptions. For example, heroes playing tough guys (Like Sheikh Mukhtar for instance) do not normally sing songs and this frivolous activitity is entrusted to more sissy looking side heroes and other characters in such movies.
Under normal circulmstances (and sometimes even in abnormal circulstances) though, the lead actors must sing songs as it is the first commandment of Hindi movies.
“Mayur Pankh” (1954) offers an interesting situation. Here the hero Kishore Sahu romances a gori (Odette Ferguson) who is unfamiliar with Indian ways of singing duets, and so the usual songs are ruled out. So another way was devised to include songs in this movie. Dance performancesby various female dancers would be organised and the romancing duo would attend them, always being seated in the front row, of course. 🙂
Interestingly, all these songs and dance performances in the movie were picturised on different actresses. It is very curious to note that all these songs, picturised on different actresses were sung by Lata. Lata in fact gave playback for as manay as six different actresses in six different songs in this movie.
I have discusssed four such songs already. here is the fifth song.
In this song, Cuckoo is the dancer who gives her performance on a stage.
Shailendra is the lyricist. Shankar Jaikishan composed the music.

Lyrics
main to chaloon pashchhim,
poorab chale duniyaa
meri qismat pe badi jale duniyaa
main to chaloon pashchhim,
poorab chale duniyaa
meri qismat pe bad jale duniyaa
o o o
jab se kisi ko basaayaa hai dil mein
jab se kisi ko basaayaa hai dil mein
ho ho ho
halchal hai gairon ki har mehfil mein
halchal hai gairon ki har mehfil mein
mere ghar chandaa sooraj chale duniyaa
meri qismat pe badi jale duniyaa
main to chaloon pashchhim,
poorab chale duniyaa
meri qismat pe badi jale duniyaa
o o o
sapnon mein wo jab se aane lage hain
sapnon mein wo jab se aane lage hain
o o o
shaam-o-sahar muskuraane lage hain
shaam-o-sahar muskuraane lage hain
meri hansi pe tadap chale duniyaa
meri qismat pe badi jale duniyaa
main to chaloon pashchhim,
poorab chale duniyaa
meri qismat pe badi jale duniyaa
o o o
raste mein kaante bichhe hain to kyaa hai
raste mein kaante bichhe hain to kyaa hai
o o o
zaalim ye pahre lage hain to kyaa hai
zaalim ye pahre lage hain to kyaa hai
main jo chaloon chhun-chhun to sang chale duniyaa
meri qismat pe badi jale duniyaa
main to chaloon pashchhim,
poorab chale duniyaa
meri qismat pe badi jale duniyaa

Thanks for the prompt response. I am a little surprised. The ‘mukhda’ tunes of both songs sound ditto to my ears!

Dear Atul,
I came across your ‘song-a-day’ site! Simply awesome, the way you keep alive the memories of those golden songs of yesteryears! My sincere compliments! I too am a great fan of old songs and all those wonderful artistes!
Just a comment on this particular song from ‘Mayurpankh’. You will notice that that the same tune was repeated by Shankar-ji in the 70s for ‘Sanyasi’. (Jaikishen was no more at that time). The song was ‘Baali Umariya Bhajan Karoon Kaise’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar and picturised on Hema Malini.

Thanks for your appreciation.
I have heard the “Sanyasi” song, but I did not notice the resemblence. Perhaps the resmemblence may not be all that obvious.
