Haay chanda gaye pardes

“Chakori” (1949) is by now an obscure movie. This movie was a Ramesh Pictures production. It was directed by Ramnarayan Dube. The movie had Bharat Bhushan, Nalini Jaywant, Om Prakash, Manorama, Cuckoo etc in this movie.
If this movie is still remembered by some people, then that will have to be because of this song. This song is sung by Lata. Mulkraj Bhakri is the lyricist and music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.
The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Mr Sadanand Kamath who originally meant to send the lyrics to me to be discussed on the occasion of Hansraj Bahl’s birthday (November 19) but then forgot all about it and was reminded of this song again when he noticed so many Hansraj Bahl songs being discussed in the blog these days. 🙂
Mr Sadanand Kamath informs me that this song is reportedly one of Lata’s personal favourite. Indeed this song, which I heard for the first time only just now had gor to be a musical gem that needs to be brought to the notice of music lovers.
Song-Haay chanda gaye pardes (Chakori)(1949) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Mulkraj Bhakri, MD-Hansraj Bahl
Lyrics(Provided by Sadanand Kamath)
haaye chanda gaye pardes
chakori yahaan ro ro marey,
ro ro marey
haaye chanda gaye pardes
chakori yahaan ro ro marey,
ro ro marey
haaye chanda gaye pardes
deepak pe jal jal marey patanga
deepak pe jal jal marey patanga
haaye ghoonghat mein gori dharey
chakori yahaan ro ro marey,
ro ro marey
haaye chanda gaye pardes
beet chaley hain din ye suhaane
mane na dil haaye kisi bahaane
o o o,
kisi bahaane
baat takey te birha ki maari
haaye dil par haath dharey
chakori yahaan ro ro marey
ro ro marey
haaye chanda gaye pardes
nainon se neer bahe
munh se wo kuchh na kahe
chupke chupke gori birha ki peed sahey
nainon se neer bahe munh se wo kuchh na kahey
chupke chupke gori birha ki peed sahey
sooj gaye hain ro ro ke saajan
haaye naina jo tum se ladey
chakori yahaan ro ro marey,
ro ro marey
haaye chanda gaye pardes
chakori yahaan ro ro marey,
ro ro marey
haaye chanda gaye pardes

Atul ji,
The lyricist of this and all other songs in Chakori is Mulkraj Bhakri,as per the HFGK.
Just yesterday,I had written a note on Varma Malik,in which it was pointed out that Varma Malik’s first Hindi song was for Phoolon ke haar-1951.
As Chakori is a 1949 film, there is no chance of this song being written by Varma Malik.

This song is definitely written by Verma Malik. In the following you tube clip Maliksaab has himself admitted that this is his first film song.

The lyricist of this is by Varma Malik. He wrote this song but Behl got famous. Than Manoj kumar bring him back in 70’s with ek tara bole…
He wrote many patriotic songs too,
One of the unique thing about Malik that he can blend shayari and folk songs very well.
The other song also a very beautiful from this film by Malik…
Lata / Behl / Chakori(1949).
“tu hamse juda hai par tere liye phir bhi mere lab pe dua hai”
