O sapnon ki raani

Posted on: February 2, 2012

In 1960s and 1970s, movie halls used to hire a rickshaw in which they would install an announcer with a PA system as well as a record player. The rickshaw would be covered with the cardboard hoardings of handmade posters of the movie.

The announcer, armed with his microphone, would announce, in his best Ameen Sayani impersonation, about the movie that was being shown in the movie hall. He would also throw leaflets of the movie towards kids who would eagerly seek them. I was not a street smart kid so I hardly managed to collect more than a few such leaflets. Later, I would borrow them from my more enterprising friends who would grudgingly part with a leaflet or two.

I stil remember (after 40 years) that “Banphool” (1971) was publicised in my locality this way. It was then that I first became aware of the title song of this movie, which was being played on the record player installed in that publicity rickshaw. I in fact vaguely recall the I managed to collect a few leaflets of this movie too.

I did not get to watch the movie ofcourse ! My folks, like many people of those days felt that watching (and even talking about movies) was not a desirable activity especially for impressionable kids. 🙂

I have so far discussed three songs from this movie. Here is another song from this movie. This song is a duet which is sung by Lata and Rafi and it is picturised on Babita and Jeetendra. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

o sapnon ke raajaa
o sapnon ki raani

o sapnon ki raani
o sapnon ki raani…..
tu jahaan main wahaan
tu jidhar main udhar
nagar nagar dagar dagar
ik raah ke hum raahi
hum raahi
tu chor main sipaahi

tu chor main sipaahi
nahin tu chor main sipaahi
nahin tu chor main sipaahi
o sapnon ke raajaa….aaaaaa
tu jahaan main wahaan
tu jidhar main udhar
nagar nagar dagar dagar
ik raah ke hum raahi
hum raahi
tu chor main sipaahi
tu chor main sipaahi
hmmhmm…tu chor main sipaahi
achcha tu chor main sipaahi
o sapnon ke raajaa

thaane mein rapat likhaay gayee
iss gaanv ki ek gori
toone usskaa
chain chhuraayaa
nindiya kar lee chori
haaye haaye
thaane mein rapat likhaay gayee
iss gaanv ki ek gori
gori woh gori hai jhoothi…..
jhootaa dosh lagaaya
aap kissi ko dil de aayee
o..ooo…muft mein shor machhayaa
machhayaa

ye hawaa ye ghata
ye samaa ye jahaan
kali kali gali gali
sab dete hain gawaahi
re gawaahi
tu chor main sipaahi
tu chor main sipaahi
chor..tu chor main sipaahi
nahin…tu chor main sipaahi
o sapnon ki raani…..eeeee

naam pataa to dekh le
koyi aur na ho woh chhailaa
chor jisse tu samjhee hai
woh chor na ho ai Lailaa
haay haay
naam pataa to dekh le
koyee aur na ho woh chhailaa

naam pataa kyaa
man mein hai….
tasweer teri deewaane
teraa bachnaa mushkil hai
ae ae
kar le laakh bahaane
bahaane
sunn zaraa aa idhar
tu pakad le magar
gaanv gaanv shehar shehar
maane meri begunaahi
begunaahi
tu chor main sipaahi

tu …tu chor main sipaahi
nahin tu chor main sipaahi
chor tu chor main sipaahi
o sapnon ke raajaa….
O sapnon ki raani
o sapnon ke raajaa….
O sapnon ki raani
o sapnon ke raajaa….
O sapnon ki raani
o sapnon ke raajaa….
O sapnon ki raani

Ha ha, delightful write-up. 🙂 I remember those times when announcements would be made from a rickshaw and the flyers would be literally flying around as they would be flung out of the rickshaw. Kids would indeed run to collect as many as they could. Oh, those days! 🙂

I remember seeing Banphool as a young boy – I think the movie did ok. The title song was a reasonable hit IMO. The scene I remember very well is Shatrughan Sinha pointing a rifle at the elephant – I hated him for it. 🙂

I remember watching ‘Banphool’ in 1971 in a ramshackle theatre in Lucknow. That’s all I remember! It was a bland, run-of-the-mill film! I also remember watching ‘Mem Saab’ a week later in the same theatre. It starred Vinod Khanna and Yogita Bali. What a contrast! ‘Mem Saab’ was quite a good thriller with a particularly macho Vinod and a ravishing Yogita!
