“Baadal” (1951) was a Varma Films Production movie. It was directed by Amiya Chakravarty. Starcast of the movie included Premnath, Madhubala, Purnima, Hiralal,Randhir, S Nazir, Agha etc.
Here is what Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our in house expert on old and obscure movies have to say on this movie:-
BADAL-1951 was a musical hit directed by Amiya Chakravarty.
Amiya Chakravarty, who was a Canteen Manager in Bombay Talkies, remained loyal and stayed back even when few others like Gyan Mukherjee, Ashok kumar, Vachha, S.Mukherjee and others left en masse to form another studio. He always had a competition with Gyam Mukherjee and it showed even when the two separated. When Badal was sucessful, Gyan Mukherjee made Shamsher in 1953 based on the same story. Later also they made Kathputali and sitaron se aagey on the same story taking the same heroine. Their competition ended with their death only.
BADAL was the Indian avatar of Robin Hood. Badal(Premnath) suffers at the hands of evil people employed by Jaising(Hiralal) the right hand of Jahagirdar Mahipal singh(Randhir). As a revenge he becomes a Baghi. He loots the rich and helps the poor. Once he saves Ratna(Madhubala) from the hands of his own people. They fall in love.
Jaising is also after Ratna. He arrests Badal, but Ratna with help from friends helps him to escape. The king comes to know all this and wants to know personally ,so he changes himself into a businessman and starts mixing with people. He learns that his own men are doing evil work and that Badal has been wronged by them.
He calls Badal and punishes all the crooks. He makes Badal his Minister and all is well that ends well.
As many as six songs from “Baadal” (1951) have already been discussed on this blog. Here is the seventh song from the movie. This song is sung by Mukesh with his usual midas touch. Picturisation shows Premnath holding the reins of his trusted horse while the horse carries Madhubala on its back. Very chivalrous of our desi Robinhood to give the lady a lift on his horse instead of making her walk on her feet. 🙂
Incidentally, 14th february happens to be the birthday anniversary of Madhubala. How very appropriate that this much loved artist should be born on the Valentine’s day.
The song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)
main raahi bhatakne waala hun
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoonoonun
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoon
yeh mast ghata meri chaadar hai
yeh dharti mera bistar hai
yeh mast ghata meri chaadar hai
yeh dharti mera bistar hai
main raat mein din ka ujaala hoon
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoon
main raahi bhatakne waala hoon
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoon
yeh bijli raah dikhaati hai
manzil pe mujhe pahunchaati hai
yeh bijli raah dikhaati hai
manzil pe mujhe pahunchaati hai
main toofaanon ka paala hoon
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoon
main raahi bhatakne waala hoon
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoon
main machloon to ek aag bhi hun
main machloon to ek aag bhi hun
main jhoomoon to ek raag bhi hoon
main jhoomoon to ek raag bhi hoon
duniya se door niraala hoon
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoon
main raahi bhatakne waala hoon
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoon
main raahi bhatakne waala hoon
koyi kya jaane matwaala hoon
