Today’s Song is the last and final song from the film Free Love-1974.
The film was made by Priy Kala Chitra, Bombay. It was directed by Batra Kaushal Raj and the music was by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The cast of the film was Yogita Bali, Kiran Kumar, Bindu, Sulochana, Jagdeep, New Entrant Sarvajeet, Rehman (Guest artist), Murad, Paro, Iftikhar, Kamal (wife of comedian Maruti), Ram Avtar, Janakidas and many many others.
As the years are passing by, names of the yesteryear actors are seen less and less. In today’s film also there are few old time artists in the cast Like Sulochana (debut in 1946), Rehman (debut in 1946), Murad (debut in 1942), Paro (debut in 1946), Iftikhar (debut in 1944), Ram Avtar (debut in 1938), and Jankidas Mehra (debut in 1941). Slowly these people disappeared from films. Some retired, some died and some stopped getting credited in films. The coming new generation will not even know their names. That is why the film historian’s role is very important. Through their hard work and efforts, their writings will keep the records of these old time stalwarts.
Unfortunately, I do not find any young movie fans engaged in the pursuit of recording history. Another important duty of a film historian is to correct the wrong information passed on by the hasty enthusiasts who gather titbits from here and there and write long posts. Some time back I had bought a book written by a young film journalist. When I started reading it, from the first page itself I started getting hiccups as the book was full of not only wrong information but even there were no efforts to check on the same name confusion artists. I felt so sad ! Few days back that journalist wanted to meet me, but I was so disgusted with him that I told him I am not in Mumbai now.
Anyway, let us now take a look at the scene of films and music in 1974…..
Out of the 132 films released in 1974, as many as 30 films were Hit films. Manoj Kumar took up the common man’s needs in his film ” Roti, Kapda aur Makan”, whereas a disturbed family life was discussed in “Kora Kagaz”. The film emphasized that both husband and wife were equally responsible for a happy married life.
One of the best ‘Middle of the line’ films in Hindi- Rajanigandha entertained not only in 1974, but also for many more years thereafter. I like it even today.
Some other notable films of 1974 were Roti, Aap ki kasam, Premnagar, Chor machaye shor, Dost, Amir Garib, Haath ki Safai, Bidai etc etc.
Another ‘New Wave’ songless film was Ankur.
The Film institute of Poona was renamed Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Waheeda Rehman, Jeetendra and Simi got married in 1974 and actor Nasir Khan-brother of Dilip kumar- died in Bombay.
Laxmikant-pyarelal was in full form with films like Roti, Kapda aur Makan,Dost, Amir Garib, Roti etc. R.D.Burman gave his fans his usual stock in films like Apki Kasam, Zehreela Insaan, Manoranjan etc. His song ‘ Jai jai shiv shankar’ became very popular.
Kalyan ji-Anand ji films like Kahani Kismat ki and Bairag were ok, but Kora Kagaz gave a Hit song ” Mera jeevan kora kagaz”. Ravindra Jain’s chor machaye shor, Usha khanna’s film Havas, O.P.Nayyar’s film Pran jaaye par vachan na jaye, Rajesh Roshan’s film Kunwara Baap, Shyam ji Ghanashyam ji’s film Thokar and Salil Chaudhari’s Rajanigandha provided few lovely songs.
A film like Five Rifles had ordinary music by K-A, but Aziz Nazan’s famous qawwali ‘jhoom barabar zoom sharabi’ in this film was very popular. Assam’s Bhupen Hazarika entered Hindi films with his first film Aarop.’Nainon mein darpan’ was a popular song in it.
National film award was won by Mukesh and Lata and the FilmFare award was won by Asha and Mahendra Kapoor. K-A won the Best MD award.
Singers Pahadi Sanyal, W.M.Khan (Aalam Ara fame) and Begum Akhtar expired in 1974. MDs Master Krishna Rao and Gyan Dutt also left this world.
The 1974 Hindi film Free Love (also known as Azad Mohabbat), directed by Batra Kaushalraj, was a romantic thriller. The plot revolved around a young woman’s struggles against exploitation, societal pressures, and a corrupt system.
Geeta (Yogeeta Bali) is an innocent young woman who is in desperate need of a job to support her impoverished family, including her brothers and sisters. She is deeply in love with Ramesh (Kiran Kumar), an aspiring lawyer who is still finishing his studies. Ramesh does not want Geeta to take up a corporate job, hoping they can build a life together once he starts practicing law. Driven by financial desperation, Geeta accepts a job as a secretary for Mohan Oberoi (Sarvjeet), a wealthy business tycoon. Mohan is a manipulative predator who openly professes a philosophy of “Free Love”—using his immense wealth to sexually exploit and control poor, vulnerable young women. Geeta’s co-workers try to warn her about Mohan’s sinister traps. It is gradually revealed that Mohan’s previous secretaries met mysterious, tragic deaths whenever they tried to resist his advances.
Mohan showers Geeta with worldly luxuries to make her dependent on him, making it impossible for her to simply quit. During a business trip to Delhi, Mohan successfully traps and compromises Geeta, shattering her dreams and destroying her relationship with Ramesh. Rather than succumbing to defeat, Geeta is forced to fight back. Ramesh uses his legal knowledge to step up as a fearless advocate, battling the corrupt system and Mohan’s immense power to bring the villain to justice and save the woman he loves.
Let us take a look at one of the old time stars from this film – Paro Devi…….
Paro Devi was a courtesan from Meerut and she entertained only the high grade clientele both in terms of affluence and eminence like Josh Malihabadi and Saghar Nizami. She was financially well off. All she wanted now was to become an actress. On the other hand, Begum Para came from a respectable family. Her father was the Chief Justice of the then Bikaner State. She was educated in Aligarh Muslim University and was financially well off. Like Paro Devi, Begum Para was also interested in becoming an actress. Since her elder brother Masroor Ul Haq was already married to actress Protima Dasgupta, it was easy for Begum Para to get an entry into the film by becoming the heroine in ‘Chaand’ (1944).
How Paro Devi landed in the Hindi film industry is not mentioned in Manto’s book. However, I guess that some of Paro Devi’s clientele may have been from the Hindi film industry and one of whom may have recommended her name to Shashdhar Mukherjee of Filmistan when he was finalising the cast for the film “Shikaari’ (1946). It is interesting to note that both Josh Malihabadi and Saghar Nizami were involved with the Hindi film industry at that time. One source also says she was introduced by Savak Vachcha in Shikari (1946) as a side-heroine.
Paro Devi started her acting career with Filmistan’s ‘Shikaari’ (1946). In the film, Ashok Kumar and Veera were in lead roles. Paro Devi had a side role as a Burmese tribal girl who was head strong and aggressive. But in view of her background as an entertainer with pleasing manners, the film’s director had lots of difficulties in getting from her the required expression and delivering the dialogues in commensurate with her role in the film. Since as courtesan, singing came to her naturally, in this film, she sang her own songs. The film was a huge box office hit. With this, Paro Devi as an actor-singer signalled her arrival in Hindi film industry.
During 1946 to 1950, Paro Devi acted in 16 films, but barring a couple of films, she was mostly in the capacity of what is known as a side heroine/character. During this period, she sang around 40 songs for herself, in 12 films. Her last song was in the film Nakhare-51. However, because of her peculiar voice quality which was more suited for coquettish songs than the soft love songs, she had to lip sync in the voices of other playback singers. For instance, in ‘Shabnam’ (1949), Shamshad Begum sang four songs for her including tumhaare liye huye badnaam. From about mid-50s onward, Paro Devi was mostly relegated to the character roles. From her filmography, I find that she was fairly active in her acting career which spanned for nearly 35 years during which she acted in 88 films. Her last film was Anokhi Dulhan-1986. She died on 3-8-1990. (Thanks to a book by Manto, an article by Sadanand Kamath ji and my notes).
