Salaam keejiye aali janaab aaye hain

I have mentioned it in the past that Hindi movies and Hindi songs tend to deal with topics that are of interest and relevance to Indian public. Having said that, one finds that there are very few songs on some topics of everyone’s interest. For example, there are very few songs, if any, that deal with the feelings of Indians as voters. 🙂
It turns out that there was indeed one such song in “Aandhi” (1975). In this movie, Suchitra Sen plays a politician. like most Indian politicians, she appears before the voters with folded hands only prior to the elections. After winning the election, she does not bother to turn up again infront of her voters.
Here is a song that every Indian voter can reaadily identify with. The picturisation of the song finds Suchitra Sen going in front of her voters and the youths of her constiturency jeer her for her inaction during the last five years and ask her inconvenient questions, eg, what has she done for the constitency during the previous five years etc.
The lyrics by Gulzar are quite hard hitting. Sun lyrics will be a source of great fun among people these days and the politicians will have to grin and bear it. But 1975, when this movie and this song were released were very different from now. Those were the days of single party rule in India and the single party led by Mrs Indiara Gandhi ruled with an itron hand. Moreover, 1975 was when Emergency was imposed and a song that mocked the elected representatives fell foul of the censors. Forget the song, even the movie was in for some trouble, mainly because the movie was based on the life of Mrs INdiara Gandhi, the then PM of India, with Suchitra Sen playing the role of Mrs Gandhi. In fact, the title of the movie, viz. “Aandhi” was nothing but Gaandhi, with the first letter of G dropped. The censor delayed passing the movie but later relented. I am not sure whether the song was passed or not at that time. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this matter.
Here is this song from “Aandhi” (1975). It is sung by Rafi, Bhupinder Singh and Amit Kumar. Gulzar is the lyricist and music is composed by R D Burman.

kehna kyun nahi maanti
Paathshaale mein chuthhi ho gayi
basta kyun nahi baandhti

aali janaab aaye hain
yeh paanch saalon ka dene
hisaab aaye hain
salaam keejiye
aali janaab aaye hain
aaa
salaam keejiye

aali janab aaye hai
jo inn khudaaon ko sajda kare na kaafir hai
bas ek vote nahin hai
yeh jaan hazir hain

Bohut lagaaye utaare hain naam ke label
chalaayi kursiyaan
humne jamaaye hain table

salaam keejiye
aali janaab aaye hain
yeh paanch saalon ka dene
hisaab aaye hain
salaam keejiye
aali janaab aaye hain
hamaare vote khareedenge
humko ann de kar
yeh nange jism chupaa dete hain kafan dekar
aaa aaa
yeh jaadugar hain
yeh chutki mein kaam karte hain
yeh bhookh pyaas ko
baaton se raam karte hain
aaa aaa aaa aaa
humaare haal pe

likhne kitaab aaye hain
humaare haal pe
likhne kitaab aaye hain
(arre bhai isliye)
salaam keejiye
aali janaab aaye hain
salaam keejiye
aali janaab aaye hain
yeh paanch saalon ka dene hisaab aaye hain
salaam keejiye
aali janaab aaye hain
yeh paanch saalon ka dene hisaab
aaye hain
aaye hain
aaye hain
salaam keejiye
aali janab aaye hain
hamaari zindagi apni hai
aapki toh nahin
yeh zindagi hai gareebi ki
paap ki toh nahin
aa aa
yeh vote denge
magar abke yoon nahi denge
Chunaav aane do
hum aapse nipat lenge
aaa aaa aaa

Salaam kijiye
aali janaab aaye hain
Salaam keejiye
aali janaab aaye hain

One guy who lip syncs the song is HARISH MAGAN and anyone knows who is that topiwala who lip syncs for the song? He sometimes double up as junior dancer cum artiste cum villain`s sidekick. One man besides suchitra sen is Kamaldeep alongwith Omprakash

Yes. This song was intact in the movie. ‘Aandhi’ was a memorable movie. Making it memorable were Suchitra Sen, Sanjeev Kumar playing the role of her estranged husband and the simply superb songs. Gulzar’s poetry and R D Burman’s music were an unforgettable combination!
