Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Ye kahaan aa gaye ham

Posted on: March 25, 2012

This article is written by Pradeep Raghunathan, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a new contributor to this blog.

This is my first attempt at reviewing a song, so please bear with me :). I have been glued to the blog off late and am trying hard to catch up with all the posts on the blog. I have, but hardly reached 1/3rd of the way in my journey so far. I am so looking forward to the journey of discovering these gems, thanks to our fellow members.

I was looking through the list of movies posted, and I was but surprised that only the iconic song ‘Rang Barse’ from Silsila was posted so far. The music of this movie was a superhit and the movie happens to be one of my all time favorite movies.

I remember I was a young lad studying in Malaysia, and every Saturday they used to play an Indian movie on the national TV channel, RTM. All of us at home were so looking forward to it that we used to make sure we had all our food ready, and we could watch the entire movie. Those sure were the days where there was a thrill in looking forward to such things. One thing the kids of this generation are missing are the fun in small things we do.

I digress.. one of the Saturdays, they were going to screen Silsila, and I was excited because it had Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha in it. Prior to this day, I had no clue about the movie and what the story line was. My sister, father and my mother sat down to watch the movie, and I got all engrossed in the movie as I seemed to like the way the movie started and showed the bonding between the brothers, Amitabh and Shashi Kapoor. Who can forget the scene where the brother’s travel in the jeep, drunk like fishes and repeating the dialogue – “Neeche paan ki dukan, upar gori ka makan”

I always felt that Amitabh and Rekha made a really good pair, and in this movie it really showed. As we progress into the movie, I so wanted the 2 of them to get together, that I hated the fact that Jaya Bhaduri spoilt this from happening. At that point of time, I had no clue that there was an affair going on between Big B and Rekha.

This movie has quite a few good numbers, with music scored by Shiv-Hari (Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma & Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia). The song Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum is sung by Lata and Amitabh himself. To correct myself, Amitabh does not sing, but render dialogues in this song, and with a voice like his, it sure sounds wonderful. The lyrics has been penned by Javed Akhtar, and he has done ample justice to the scene. The song is picturised on Rekha and Amitabh, who is in a dilemma, and so wants to elope with Rekha (who is his ex-lover and is now married to Sanjeev Kumar)

This song is one of my all time favorites, and i was pleasantly surprised that my young daughter seems to like it too. Her other favorite Old Hindi numbers are “Mile Na Phool”, “Piya Aiso Jiya Mein”, “Ajeeb Daastan Hai Yeh” and “Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji”.

Hope you enjoy the song + dialogues from this number.

Song-Yeh Kahaan Aa Gaye Hum (Silsila) (1981) Singers-Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics-Javed Akhtar, MD-Shiv Hari

Lyrics

Main aur meri tanhaai aksar yeh baatein karte hain
tum hoti to kaisa hota,
tum yeh kehti,
tum voh kehti
tum is baat pe hairaan hoti,
tum us baat pe kitni hansti
tum hoti to aisa hota,
tum hoti to vaisa hota
main aur meri tanhaai aksar yeh baatein karte hain

yeh kahaan aa gaye hum
yoonhi saath saath chalte
teri baahon mein hai jaanam
mere jism-o-jaan pighalte
yeh kahaan aa gaye hum
yoonhi saath saath chalte

yeh raat hai,
yeh tumhaari zulfein khuli hui hai
kahin nahin ho
magar yeh dil hai ke keh raha hai
ke tum yahin ho,
yahin kahin ho

O,
tu badan hai main hoon chhaaya
tu na ho to main kahan hoon
mujhe pyaar karne waale
tu jahan hai main vahan hoon
hamein milna hi tha hamdam
isi raah pe nikalte
yeh kahan aa gaye hum
yoonhi saath saath chalte
hmm, meri saans saans maheke
koi bheena bheena chandan
tera pyaar chaandni hai
mera dil hai jaise aangan
koi aur bhi mulaayam
meri shaam dhalte dhalte
yeh kahaan aa gaye hum
yoonhi saath saath chalte

majboor yeh haalaat,
idhar bhi hai udhar bhi
tanhaai ki ek raat,
idhar bhi hai udhar bhi
kehne ko bahut kuch hai,
magar kisse kahe hum
kab tak yunhi khaamosh rahe aur sahe hum
dil kehta hai duniya ki har ek rasm utha de
deewaar jo hum dono mein hai,
aaj gira de
kyun dil mein sulagte rahe, l
ogon ko bata de
haan humko mohabbat hai,
mohabbat hai, mohabbat
ab dil mein yehi baat,
idhar bhi hai udhar bhi

yeh kahaan aa gaye hum
yoonhi saath saath chalte
yeh kahaan aa gaye hum

It is a really mature film, made for adults. Even though it has a rather predictable ending, it had some great scenes. Rang Barse is like a mandatory Holi Song and Yeh ladki hai ya shola is so like a Punjabi wedding.

I like this song a lot too. Welcome to Atul’s blog Pradeep. Your recounting of your watching of this film was really so heartfelt. I am glad your daughter also likes old hindi film songs.

Thanks for reminding me of this song. I tend to overlook Hindi film songs of post 1970s and this blog is a place where I get such reminders like this one.

It is more of a poetry than a song and I like it.

Jaaved Akhtar is one of a rare poets whose poetry reminds me of the poetry of Hindi film songs of the golden era. Even in films like ‘Ye Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara’ (2011) his Urdu couplets recited by his son Farhan Akhtar were nice to listen.

This is a really lovely number – my favourite from Silsila. I especially like the way the song sways from one end to the other, if you know what I mean. It is solemn – and the Lata breaks out “tu badan hai main hoon chhaya” and then the change in pace with “humen milna hi thaa humdum”. Just fantastic. Shiv-Hari have excelled here.

In fact, the other songs of Silsila are also lovely. I especially like the Punjabi number (as Ava puts it ;-)), “pehli pehli baar dekha aisa jalwa, ye ladki hai ya shola” and the beautiful “sar se sarke, sarke chunariya”. Just lovely! Actually all the songs are good – I may not be doing justice to the others.

Lovely write-up, Pradeep. And welcome to the blog in this avatar. Looking forward to more write-ups from you. I hated the Amitabh-Rekha pairing (maybe because I absolutely LOVED the Amitabh-Jaya pairing) but I will not hold that against you. 😉

Thanks for the lyrics and nice article and welcome.

Amitji and Rekhaji `s subtle on screen chemistry elevates this song to a different level.

“magar ye dil keh rahaa hai ke tum yahin kahin ho,yahin kahin ho”
“Huyee aur bhi mulaayam, meri shaam dhalte dhalte”
“Tu badan hai main hoon chhayaa”

These lines are my all time favourites and every time I listen these lines, I cry shamelessly.

Yes, the line should be “HUYEE aur bhi mulaayam”,it is not “KOI aur bhi mulaayam”
Am I right? Please correct if I am wrong.

Thank you ever so much all of you. I am humbled, as every one of you stars of this blog have responded to my post. I have no words to express how happy I am feeling now. I am really thankful to Atul to have posted my review on the blog, I am truly honoured.

Mr. Prakashchandra, I am sure you are right about the lyrics.

Mr. Arunkumar Deshmukh – Thank you and I will try to write the next review pretty soon.

Mr. Ava Suri – Thank you, I try to play a few songs now and then to keep her interest alive in Old Hindi numbers.

Mr. Sadanand Kamath – I liked ZNMD too, reminded one of Dil Chahta Hai. Javed Akhtar is one of my favourite contemporary lyricists.

Mr. Raja – I know what you mean by swaying from one end to the other – I guess that was one reason this stands out from the other numbers, as the cliche goes.. yeh gaana thoda HATKE hai ;).

I was wondering, and also was asking Atul about it, what do you think about an idea of adding the LP cover of the movies posted here? They would make it even more nostalgic. Just thinking aloud, waiting for your opinion on it.

Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh just pointed out to me that I addressed Ms Ava Suri as Mr Ava Suri, I am so sorry, and I beg your pardon for my bad. Sorry.

Someone told me that this was the film for which Javed Akhtar first wrote the lyrics, although being the son of a shair, Jaan Nissar Akhtar, he started writing shairy much earlier.

Pradeepji,
I may be a last one to welcome you on Atul’s Bandwagon. Very interesting write up. You may be upset/angry on me as I loved the predictable end of this movie (I am a big fan of Amitji & Jayaji) During my preteen age, I watched their Bansi Birju, Ek Nazar & Abhimaan on DD. It was after almost 8 years, I watched AB & Rekhaji’s first movie on TV. It’s not like that I don’t like them as a pair onscreen, but In Silsila, when they all three were together, I wanted the end as it was.
Thanks for posting my most fav song from this movie. Music is excellent. I have watched Shivkumar Sharma’s live performance three times (with Zakir Hussain). My kids loves this duo so much that they would fly anywhere in country just to watch them. Not lucky enough so far to watch Hari Prashad Chaurashiya performing live. But last week, we went to see Zakir Hussain’s live performance called”Zakir Hussain’s Master of Percussion”. One of his Team Mate was Rakesh Chaurashiya, Pandit Chaurashiya’s nephew and disciple. He was excellent. Sorry, my post/comment got longer. Thanks again.
