Manwa kaahe phir tadpaaye

Posted on: April 4, 2012

“Waapas” (1943) is a very old movie, nearly seven decades old in fact. Not too many details are known about this movie. And it does not help matters when conflicting information is available about this movie.

Now Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our in house encyclopaeadia has shared lots of invaluable information about this movie. Here is what he has to say about this movie:-

WAPAS-1943 was a film of New Theatres,Calcutta amd was directed by hemchandra Chunder, music by RCBoral and Lyrics by Munshi Zakir Hussain, Pt.Bhushan and Akhtar Chugtai. The story, screenplay and dialogues were by Binoy Chatterjee.

New Theatres(as also some other prodn.houses of Bengal) had kept a Master in Hindi/Hindustani in their story department, whose job was to ensure good hindi dialogues and later good diction and pronunciations of the actors while delivering the dialogues.Just goes to show how much importance to small things was given those days to ensure quality.
Wapas was a typical Village-city life/culture conflict. Those days Gandhiji was advocating movement to the villages “Gaon Chalo “.What a far-sighted approach to the problem of the future !

Hiren Babu(Indu Mukherjee),a retired person moves into quiet Rampur village along with his daughter Shobha(Bharati Devi),who is educated. She falls in love with the village boy Shyam(Asit Baran) son of Deven Babu(Nawab) who has initial small quarrel with her. They decide to get married, but to their dismay both families oppose the marriage.Deven Babu,a known miser wants a large Dowry and knowing he wont get it,criticises the city culture which has spoiled the girl,Shobha. This can not be tolerated by Hiren Babu and he decides to leave the village and go back to city.
Hiren Babu and Shobha return to city and Hiren gets a job.One day his boss Dutt Babu(Gopal das) and his wife(Raj Laxmi) happen to be in their house ara and see Shobha. They ask Hiren Babu her hand for their nephew Rajendra(Dhiraj Bhattacharya). Both sides agree for the marriage.

Meanwhile,Shyam comes to city in search of Shobha and takes up a job as coachman with Rajendra. One day, when Rajendra takes shobha for a coach ride, the lovers see each others.Rajendra suspects and asks them. They tell him all the true story.
Rajendra decides to ensure that lovers get married and Shyam replaces him, while he becomes the coachman at the marriage time. After the marriage, everything is revealed and the elders realise that love is greater than anything else and all return(WAPAS) to the village.

This was a good film but not a great success.

I have discussed two songs from this movie in the past. Here is another song from the movie. According to the uploader of this song on YT, the song is sung by Binota Roy, but a comment there states that the song is sung by Shaila Devi. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the matter.

For the time being, I will go by the assumption that this song is sung by Binota Roy. Pt Bhushan is the lyricist and music is composed by R C Boral. This movie has Bharati Devi and Asit Baran in lead roles, so one assumes that this song is picturised on Bharti Devi.

PS-Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh informs us that the lyricist is Akhtar Chugtai as per HFGK whereas HFGK is silent about the singer.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Manwa kaahe phir tadpaaye (Waapas)(1943) Singer-Binota Roy, Lyrics-Akhtar Chugtai, MD-R C Boral

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

manwa kaahe phir tadpaaye
manwa kaahe phir tadpaaye
bhool gayi thhi jo barsaaten
bhool gayi thhi jo barsaaten
chaandni raaten
pyaar ki baaten
chaandni raaten
pyaar ki baaten
ab kyun reh reh kar hai
man ko unki yaad sataaye
manwa kaahe phir tadpaaye

jaag uthen kyun
neend ke maathen
kahe re swapne
rishte naate
chhod chuki thi
jis jeevan ko
chhod chuki thi
jis jeevan ko
kaahe yaad mein aaye
manwa kaahe phir tadpaaye

yaad kisi ki dil mein aayi
nainan ne phir jhadi lagayi
yaad kisi ki dil mein aayi
nainan ne phir jhadi lagayi
man ka panchhi
kyun man mein hai
man ka panchhi
kyun man mein hai
bhoole raag sunaaye
manwa bhoole raag sunaaye
manwa kaahe phir tadpaaye

Atul ji,
You guessed it right ! I am happy that a film song from 40s is posted.I feel as if I am on my home ground when a 40’s film is in limelight. This is my chance to showcase to the younger gen how the stories used to be in those days.
Basically not much is changed, only the style of treatment to the subjects is different. And that is right also,as when everything is changed, the style too must suit the changed tastes.

I can confirm that this song was sung by Binota Bose and NOT by Binota Roy as suggested by Mr. Deshmukh. There was another beautiful ghazal from this film – ‘Jigar ke daagh naye gul khilaaye jaate hain, khushi ke geet bhi ro ro ke gaaye jaate hain.’ Can a music lover trace this beautiful song. I am dying to hear it.

Atul ji,
HFGK is silent on the singer, but mentions that the song is written by Akhtar Chugtai (and NOT Pt. Bhushan).

Mahendra Dwesar,
I Have observed that the name Binota Bose/Basu/Roy has often been used interchangeably on the websites like Geeta Roy/Dutt. Her maiden name was Binota Bose/Basu. After her marriage in 1947 to Jyotirmoy Roy, she became Binota Roy. You are correct to say that this song was sung by her as Binota Bose.

The audio link of her song ‘jigar ke daag naye gil khilaaye jaate hain’ : http://youtu.be/Pa-73c9CnnY

The song is not from ‘Wapas (1943) but from ‘Hamrahi (1945).

Sorry, for my mistake. ‘Jigar ke daagh naye gul khilaye jaate hain’ was indeed from ‘Hamrahi’. Thank you, Mr. Kamath for your correction. Who was the author and where can we hear this beautiful ghazal?

Sorry, once again. I have heard the song from the audio link suggested by Mr. Kamath. Sadly, the audio quality is not very good.

The song was written by Zakir Hussain.

About the audio quality, I would say that in relation to very rare songs, something is better than nothing 🙂
