Kyaa dekha ab nainon waali

This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

I was contemplating a write-up on the song ‘kyaa dekhaa ab naiano waali nainaa kyoon bhar aaye’ from film DHARMPUTRA (1961) over a month for discussion in the blog. But the song is so heart touching that I have been avoiding watching it again for a write-up. The song is a masterpiece and worthy of bringing to the notice of readers of this blog. The film was produced by B R Chopra and directed by Yash Chopra. Mala Sinha, Rehman, Shahsi Kapoor and Indrani Mukherjee were the main actors in the film. Five songs from this film have already been discussed in the blog.

A brief background to the song seems necessary to appreciate the situation of the song. Two families of Dr Amrit Rai (Manmohan Krishna) and Nawab Badrudin are neighbours and have very close relationship. Husn Bano (Mala Sinha), the daughter of Nawab is in love with a young man Hamid and get pregnant. Hamid goes missing. The child in the bassinet is Husn Bano’s son born out of wedlock but adopted by her neighbour Amrit Rai’s family as their own child for the sake of the Nawab Badrudin’s family honour.

The song is poignant one brining out the emotional upheaval faced by the mother of such a child. Everything about this song is heart touching – Sahir Ludhianvi’s lyrics, Asha Bhonsle’s rendition, N Datta’s composition and Mala Sinha’s performance on the screen. The first three lines of the mukhda (including repeat in second and third stanzas) sung in low tone are not used for lip syncing on Mala Sinha but played in the background. This, in my view, is the masterly presentation of the extreme emotional upheaval in the mind of a mother by making her speechless.

After listening to this song I do not know what to say about Asha Bhonsle. It is amazing that this singer of high pitch high tempo fun songs like ‘ kyaa kushi kyaa gham jab tak hai dam mein dam’ from Hare Ram Hare Krishna (1971) is equally at ease in singing low pitch low tempo emotional song like this one. In both these songs, she creates the required atmosphere through her renditions.

Song-Kyaa dekha ab nainon waali (Dharmputra)(1961) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Sahir Ludhianvi, MD-N Datta

Lyrics

kyaa dekhaa ab nainon waali
nainaa kyoon bhar aaye
nainaa kyoon bhar aaye
kokh bhari aur god hai kaali,
nainaa yoon bhar aaye
nainaa yoon bhar aaye

maa bankar bhi maa na bani main
badanaami ke dar se
maa banker bhi maa na bani main
badnaami ke dar se
doodh meri bojhal sine ko
aansoo ban ban barse
apanaa dhan aur aankh sawaali
nainaa yoon bhar aaye
nainaa yoon bhar aaye
nainaa yoon bhar aaye
kyaa dekhaa ab nainon waali
naina kyoon bhar aaye
naina kyoon bhar aaye
khok bhari aur god hai kaali
naina yoon bhar aaye
naina yoon bhar aaye

ji bhi saki to jeetey ji ye
sog rahegaa mujhko
ji bhi saki to jeetey ji ye
sog rahegaa mujhko
bolegaa par meraa munnaa
maa na kahegaa mujhko
maa kahalaanaa ban gayaa gaali
nainaa yoon bhar aaye
nainaa yoon bhar aaye
nainaa yoon bhar aaye
kyaa dekhaa ab nainon waali
naina kyoon bhar aaye
naina kyoon bhar aaye
khok bari aur god hai khaali
naina yoon bhar aaye
naina yoon bhar aaye

I saw ‘Dharmputra’ as a morning show years after it had released. It was a very well made movie. N Datta’s music and Sahir’s lyrics were memorable. My favourite song? The heartbreaking “Main jab bhi akeli hothi hoon…” sung with such feelings by Asha Bhosle.

One of the best and touching song.
Another touching song the movie Dharmptra had; is ‘main jab bhi akeli hoti huin tum chupake se aa jate ho and Zanke meri aakhon me bite din yaad dilate ho’

Sadanand ji

Thanks for posting this lovely sentimental song, a favorite of mine. (It was on my list of songs also for posting).

Yes, a lovely rendition by Asha. The sentimental songs rendred by her are just superb.
