O bedardi kyun tadpaaye

This article is written by Khyati Bhatt, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

The world of Hindi Classical Music has produced so many maestros both in vocal and in instrumental category. We have different maestros of different gharanas in the field of vocal music and same is the case in different instrument categories too. In the field of string instuments, we have sitar, veena, sarangi, sarod, and a few more. When we take the name or even think of sitar, the first name that comes to our mind is Pandit Ravi Shankar, whose real name is Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury.

Our younger generation may not be aware of this legend and his contributions to the Indian classical music which was not limited only to India. In western side of the Globe, he is as famous as The Beetles. How lucky I am that I could see two live performances of this legend! The environment he creates during his performance is totally mesmerizing. Last month, one of our local musical organization planned a concert to celebrate his 92nd birthday in which he himself was to play on sitar, accompanied by 86 years old Smt Lakshmi Shankar, a classical vocalist of Patiala Gharana. But due to some unknown reasons it’s postponed till Nov/Dec. The person is so much passionate about music that he is still performing on stage at the age of 92!

My kids’ piano teacher is from Mumbai and whenever her mother visits from India, she would share with me all her childhood memories. I was brought up in a big family and my mother has taught me to listen to all elders patiently. At that age, I was not happy to do this “job” as I just wanted to play with my cousins after returning from school. But as a mark of respect, I would sit with my uncle and listen to all his experiences. Now, I do feel that those experiences of elders do help you in one way or other during the later stages of your life.

Coming back to the Piano teacher’s mother – one day, while sharing her stories/experiences, she proudly told me that she had learned sitar and proctor of her test was Pandit Ravi Shankar. I was so amazed and could not express any feelings! Aware of this blank facial expression of mine, she said, “But Khyati, he was just a beginner at that time!” She was just trying to make me feel better, but still, for me it was like a “one time in your life” event.

Continuing the write up about this legend- Ravi Shankar has composed music in three hindi movies – Anuradha (1960), Godaan (1963) & Meera (1979). (correction is always helpful) The Movie Godaan is based on a novel with the same title and written by famous Hindi writer, Munshi Premchand. When I say Munshi Premchand, it brings me back my 8th grade memories. My maternal uncle (Mama) was taking my Hindi class and as a preface, he was informing us about the author of this short story we were about to start, called “Kafan”. All Hindi literature lovers knows what a heartrending story this is. It was then that I got acquainted with this auther, Munshi Premchand for the first time.

Here is a song from the movie Godaan as a wish from us on April 7th, his 92nd birthday. This beautifully choreographed song is picturised on Ragini, Manohar Deepak and is sung by Geeta Dutt and Mahendra Kapoor. This song is penned by Anjaan and the melodious music is composed by Ravi Shankar.

oho oho oho

oho oho oho
oho oho ho

ho oo oo oo
o bedardi kyun tadpaaye
jiyara mora rijhaayke ke
o nirdardi main pachhtayi
tuhj se neha lagay ke

ho oo oo
o bedardi kyun tadpaaye
jiyara mora rijhaayke ke
o nirdardi main pachhtaayi
tuhj se neha lagaay ke

o madhubayni kaahe lubhaaye
meethi taan sunayke
o mrignayni kaahe rijhaaye
nainan baan chalaayke
ho oo oo
o madhubayni kahe lubhaaye
meethi taan sunayke
o mrignayni kaahe rijhaaye
nainan baan chalaayke

jab se dekha tuhje sajanwa
main sapnon mein kho hayi

ho kho gayi
ho kho gayi

o nirmohi chupke chupke
main to teri ho gayi

ho main to teri ho gayi
mujh se nain churaaye balamwa
dil ka chain churaayke

o nirdardi main pachhtaayi
tuhj se neha lagaay ke

indradhanush si tori chunariya
hirday par chha jaye re
hirday par chha jaye re
sanwar sanwar kar gori dulhaniya
jag jaise chhal jaye re
ho jag jaise chhal jaaye re
arre mohan mantar kaahe chalaye
madur madhur muskaay ke
o mrignayni kaahe rijhaaye
nainan baan chalaayke

aaha aaha aaha
aaha aaha ha

aaha aaha aaha
aaha aaha ha

oho oho oho
oho oho ho

oho oho oho
oho oho ho

bada nithur hai mora saanwariya
jo na paseeje pyaar mein

ho pyaar mein pyaar mein
bina pyaar main jiyu ri kaise
chaliya is sansaar mein

ho chaliya is sansar mein
birhan main ban jaaoon joganiya
duniya ko thukraay ke

o nirdardi main pachhtaayi
tuhj se neha lagaay ke

preet teri pehchaan na paaya
jiya mora anjaan re
ho jiya mora anjaan re
tujh se mera neh sajaniya
karoon nichhaawar praan re
ho karoon nichhaawar praan re
arre prem ka naata jod le tu
batiyaa beeti bisraay ke
o mrignayni ab na rijhaa tu
nainan baan chalayke
o bedardi kyun tadpaaye
jiyara mora rijhaayke ke
o nirdardi main pachhtaayi
tuhj se neha lagaay ke

o madhubayni kaahe lubhaye
meethi taan sunaayke
o mrignayni kaahe rijhaaye
nainan baan chalaayke
