Most songs of this blog are from an era between 1931 to 1980s. Songs later than 1980s are often described by me as songs of post golden era when the songs were not what they used to be in the earlier decades.

Yesterday, I was showing off my knowledge to a couple of regulars of this blog in private by telling them that “Chor Machaaye Shor”(1974) had six songs, and five of them were very well known, but the sixth song was quite less known. Then I boasted that I was going to post this rare song in the blog today.

“Dastak” (1970) was a movie on a theme that called for mature audience, But Indian audience, media as well as the censors were not mature at that time. Such movies were regarded as obscene and were given A certificates. Instead of attracting mature audience to the movie halls, such movies attracted immature audiences hoping to find some titillating scenes in the movies.

I do not know as to why I suddenly remembered Sanjeev Kumar (real name Haribhai Jariwala) today early in the morning when I was preparing for my morning walk. His anniversary dates were nowhere near and I have not seen any of his films and video clips for a long time. As it is, my ‘area of operations’ on YT are mainly confined to the watching/listening of video/audio clips pertaining to the period between 1940-1960, straying sometime up to late 60s and most of his his songs does not fit in to my preference. Probably, this was a reminder to me from Sanjeev Kumar donning a white suit and trouser in true suspense film style echoing “old man, have a peep at me too sometime”.

This song is from the epic called “Mughal-e-Azam”. Seeing this film on the big screen is an experience to behold, which our children are having no opportunity to do. I have seen it at ‘Maratha Mandir’ in Bombay Central, where this film premiered in 1960. No, I was not there for the premier but saw it when it was showing, must be in the mid 80’s. All of us are familiar with the music of this film. As far as I can see only two songs from this film remain to be discussed, one is “bekas pe karam keejiye sarkaar-e-madina” and the other is “prem jogan banke”. The later is sung by Bade Gulam Ali Khan, reputedly the only time he was persuaded to sing a film song. My personal favourite song in the film is “aye ishq yeh sab duniya waale, bekaar ki baaten karte hain” which is already posted. Mean while, Deshmukh Sir is doing a painstaking job of listing films with only one or two songs remaining to be posted. I expect he will reach ‘M’ too soon.
