Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Jawaaniyaan ye mast mast

Posted on: May 2, 2012

“Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) is the movie where Shammi Kapoor finally got transformed from a struggling underconfident actor to a successful confident star. He was quite fortunate to get the opportunity to work in this movie because Shammi Kapoor was nowhere near being the first choice for this movie.

The fortuitious circumstances that helped Shammi Kapoor land this role were described by Sudhir jee in his comments in another song of this movie. Here is what Sudhir jee has to say on this matter :-

The circumstances before and after are very interesting, and that Shammi Kapoor was in this film and got a box office hit was almost incidental, nay providential.

This film is from the production house of Filmistan. Filmistan was created after Sashadhar Mukherjee, Ashok Kumar and others exited from Bombay Talkies after the passing away of Himanshu Rai. The studios were very active in the 40s and 50s, with a large number of hits being produced from here. In the early fifties, the studio was taken over by Sh. Tolaram Jalan, an industrialist. Sashadhar Mukherjee stayed on and continued to produce films.

Ameeta was a protege of Jalan, and after having appeared in supporting roles in many movies, Tumsa Nahin Dekha was planned as a launch vehicle for her as a leading lady. Dev Anand was originally signed up for the leading role, but he opted out before the shooting began. Subsequently, Shammi Kapoor was brought in as the lead actor.

Nasir Hussain had the charge of story, screenplay and direction. The image makeover that was the siginificant change for Shammi Kapoor was developed as a discussion between him and Nasir Hussain. The rest, as we say, is history.

But there is still some more, indicating that some providence was at work. Filmistan Studios produced three films in 1957 (Champakali, Paying Guest, and Tumsa Nahin Dekha). At the end of 1957, differences arose between Jalan and Sashadhar Mukherjee, and the latter departed to form his own production house ‘Filmalya’. After his exit, it was as if Filmistan lost the steam. A production house that was putting out 3 to 5 films every year, with many hits to its credit, produced only 5 films in the next 7 years. And after the release of Dooj Ka Chand in 1964, the studio ceased production of films and started renting out the facility to other producers.

So it seems that the providence and circumstances were colluding to make Tumsa Nahin Dekha happen, and that Shammi Kapoor should be in it before the studio itself lost the chugging power. Meant as the launch vehicle for Ameeta, instead it launched Shammi Kapoor into an orbit where no one had been before

Indeed, we are extremely fortunate that planets were properly aligned in their orbits and they made things happen in favour of Shammi Kapoor.

I have discussed as many as five songs from “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) in the past. Here is the sixth song from the movie. This song is sung by Rafi and it is picturised on Shammi Kapoor of course. The picturisation shows Shammi Kapoor looking at a bevy of pretty ladies and wonders which one of them is meant for him.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

With ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ Shammi Kapoor never looked back! Movie after movie, were smash hits at the box office!
However, not many people know that in an incredible twist of ‘kismat’, Shammi turned down a role that Dev agreed to do. The movie was an evergreen hit! The movie? ‘Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai’!

Atul-ji, Ameeta has always been a mystery to me. She was cute—and talented too! She was superb in ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ along with Anita Guha and Shubha Khote. Ameeta had very good lead roles in ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’ and ‘Sawan’. So it begs the question…Why did she choose to disappear from movies?

Ameeta is there in Around the world as Rajashree`s freind Right??

I have als seen her as a plump/fat Ameeta in
“Hum sab ustaad hai”(with kishore kumar)
and with Mehmood in “Pyaase panchhi”
“Haseena maan jaayegi”(as a second lead or is it comic pairing: opposite Johnnywalker)

And in “Aasraa” as a second lead or a jealous one sided lover alongwith Biswjeet,Mala sinha
“Raakhi” as a second lead(opposite Ashok kumar

True Prakashchandra-ji, she was also there in ‘Around the World’ as Rajshree’s chaperone. But in all these movies she had supporting roles. In ‘Rakhi’ she had a good role, though a miniscule one! In ‘Aasraa’ her role as the rich, unsympathetic girl was quite a good one. So was her role in ‘Mere Mehboob’. Sadhana may have looked gorgeous but Ameeta’s acting was far superior! So, what happened to her?

Mani ji,
Hare is the info about Ameeta on Wikipedia. As we all know, internet resources are not always true/reliable. May be Arunji can throw some light on her career and present situation.

AMEETA was very good looking and an actress with talent, but she lacked a practical approach and farsightedness in the film industry.
That is why,an actress, who debuted in 1952,an era when opportunities were avalable in scores, and one who had worked with the likes of top actors like Ashok kumar,Dev Anand,Shammi Kapoor,Rajendra kumar,Manoj kumar,Bharat Bhushan etc,she still could not graduate to a leading lady in many films.
Due to her some wrong decisions(like refusing the offer of Mother India-which KumKum did later) and accepting all and sundry B grade films, destroyed her blooming career and she was frustrated.
After acing in her last film,Haseena Maan Jayegi-68,she took the( first) right decision to get married and move away from the filmworld.
Today she is staying in Cuff Parade area in Mumbai with her Businessman husband and family peacefully.
Her daughter Sabeeha also repeated the history of her mother and today she is nowhere, after starting well in early 90s.

Arunji,
We can always trust you with this kind of info. There are few artists in our film industry, who after being in the industry, just disappeared due to many reasons. Kitne saare ka to pata bhi nahin hai ki woh kahan hai/kya kar rahe hai.

Atulji,
After you include this song in the list of songs-moviewise category, as you have mentioned, you will have six songs of this movie. I have a CD which includes only these six songs. According to Arunji’s list of full/ 1 short/2 short songs for the movie, there are still few songs missing from this films. Arunji, may I request you to give some info?

There are seven songs in this movie and this song is the sixth. But in reality, one of the songs is a multiple version song, namely “Yoon To Hamne Laakh Haseen dekhe hain”. It has Rafi and Asha Bhonsle version. I have discussed Rafi version. If I include Asha Bhonsle version too in the write up, then we will have all the songs of this movie in the blog.

Atul ji,
Khyati ji is right.
I am sorry.I rechecked my notes and find that now Tumsa Nahin Dekha has posted all songs. There is no multiple version of any song, according to HFGK.There are only 6 songs. In the film however there was a song ‘yoon to hamne’ in Asha’s voice. There is no record issued for it.
Secondly I also found that the film ‘Usne kaha tha ‘ is also complete.
Thirdly In the film ‘Ujala’ only the following two songs are due now-
a) Yaron soorat hamari pe-Rafi and Mukesh
b) Chham2 lo suno chham2-Lata/Manna Dey/Chorus.
Out of 8 songs,6 are already posted.
Request you to make appropriate entries.Regret lapse.

Deskhmukh Sir & Atul ji,

Thanks for providing the details about Ameeta’s career. I have seen a few of her films and i remember only the songs. Regarding the version song discussion, i have noticed that there is a singly song missing from the list of “goonj utthi shehnaayi” i.e “mujhko agar bhool jaaoge tum” – Lata. Yesterday i was watching the songs of this film. ‘In ‘Tere sur aur mere geet’, there is this second stanza which is :
‘Mujh ko agar bhool jaaoge tum
mujh se agar door jaaoge tum’

The one song missing is most likely a sad version song of “tere sur aur mere geet’. There is no link availabel on youtube of this sad version song.

Similarly in the list of remainging songs there is also “Love in Tokyo” -O mere shaah-e-khubaan”, Rafi version is discussed, but Lata version remains to be included. I had looked but could nor find a youtube link for the lata version.

Like

Nahm,
Here is the link for the video-Lata version. Alas! You will find only two stanzas.

Khyati-ji, I’m afraid I too don’t trust internet sources at all. I was keen to know what happened to Kalpana, who had starred opposite Shammi Kapoor in ‘Professor’. As you know, like Ameeta, she too just faded away. Imagine my shock when the internet wisely informed that she had died! Turned out they had confused this Kalpana with the Kannada actress of the same name!
Here’s some trivia for you…..Did you know that Ameeta was not the original choice of heroine in ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnai’? Asha Parekh was considered but for some strange reason, director Vijay Bhatt was not at all impressed by this new girl. He vetoed. And in stepped Ameeta!

Arun-ji, this time, I’m shocked! Thanks for the info and the link. I suddenly remembered her in ‘Pyar Kiye Ja’ opposite Kisore Kumar, ‘Teesra Kaun’ and ‘Tasveer’ opposite Feroz Khan. I think the last time I saw her on the silver screen was a small role in ‘Ek Bechara’. Poor woman, I’ll miss her…..

Mani ji,
Remember she was one of “Teen Deviyaan”. Songs were melodious- are yaar meri tum bhi ho gazab……….with Dev Anand.

Khyati-ji, of course I’ve seen ‘Teen Deviyan’! But my favourite ‘devi’ in that movie was Nanda. And my favourite song? ‘Likha hai tere ankhon ne, kiska afsana…’

Khair, I still feel sad for Kalpana…..

I found it interesting that Tumsa Nahin Dekha was originally supposed to be a Sahir movie. But after writing one song (yunh to humne laakh haseen), Sahir left the project and Majrooh took over.
Was this because of a Sahir-OP Nayyar rift (maybe coming from Naya Daur?), was it because Dev saab did not take up the project – or was it something else?

Raja ji,
In one of the detailed interviews(in 3 installments),to Dr.Mandar Bichu,in 2003,O.P.Nayyar had talked in details about his tiffs with Dev Anand,Raj Kapoor,Dilip Kumar, kishorekumar,Sahir etc.
in this interview,he says,
‘ I was working on the music of Shashdhar mukherjee’s filmistan film Tumsa Nahin Dekha.I had gone to a party. In that party,I heard Sahir telling somebody that S.D.Burman is made by him.He also bragged the same about Khayyam.I felt,if he can talk this shit about a great composer like Burman da,he will say same thing about me too.I immediately stopped working with him and after just 1 song in TND,he was shown exit.’

This is what O P Nayyar said which may be true. But fact remains that OPN and SL were two head strong personalities and creative differences would invariably result in both of them taking rigid stands. The end result in most of such cases is that one of them would be taken off the project. This happens in the corporate world also.

As a result of this, most major music directors stopped working with Sahir Ludhianvi. That is why we find Sahir Ludhianvi working with “lesser” music directors viz Ravi, Roshan, N Datta etc after 1957.

Like

Atul,

Of the ‘lesser’ music directors you mentioned, I do no think Roshan and Ravi came under that category.

That is why the inverted commas. The fact remains that Sahir Ludhianvi only worked with music directors who were willing to put up with his ego.

Atulji,

There is one more version of this song, consisting of two antaras, in which the the last antara is different. The same is

” इधर से जो गई गुज़र, उसी पे हम मचल गए,
इधर से जो गई गुज़र, उसी पे हम मचल गए,
जो कुछ ना हो सका तो फिर, करीब से निकल गए,
करीब से निकल गए .”
