Mil gaye duniya mein jeene ke sahaarey

Posted on: June 6, 2012

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Some days back, I had posted the first song from the film ‘Dark Street’ (1961), first on this blog that is. The song is ‘Itne Badey Jahaan Mein, Apna Bhi Koi Hota’ . It was a farmaish from Prakash ji that was pending for some time. In that write up, I had written that the film has some more wonderful songs, and had promised I would be posting more songs from this film. So here is the next song from this film. This is a gem of a duet rendered by Manna Dey and Suman Kalyanpur. The lyrics for this film are penned by Indeevar and Gulshan Baawra. The YouTube post identifies the lyricist as Gulshan Baawra.

The film is produced under the banner of Shankar Movies, Bombay, and directed by Naresh Sehgal. The music is composed by that maverick music director, Dattaram. The cast of actors includes Ashok Kumar, Nishi, Anoop Kumar, KN Singh, Mahendra, Shivraj, Iftekhar, Mirza Musharraf, Amirbai Karnataki, Altaf, Prem Sagar, Munshi Munakka, Radheyshyam, Sohni, Krishnavtar Singh, Devraj, Kathaana.

From the earlier posted song, our Arun ji has supplied the following synopsis of the film.

DARK STREET-1961 is a film from the time when Ashok kumar was in the transition period. His past as a hero was so good, that established producers did not dare to offer him character roles but then he was also not fit for hero’s role now into his third decade as an actor. The second rung of producers were still ready to make him a hero and special roles were written for him suiting his age and experience. Such films were usually short lived and went into oblivion soon. In such films the leading ladies were also not from the top performers in the industry.
The name of the film has actually no correlation to its story at all. It is a story of two girls who exactly look-alike. Of these, the rich girl wants to be poor to get peace of mind and poor girl wants to be rich to fulfill her dreams. Roopa (Nishi) is a rich girl without parents and her wicked uncle Seth Deen Dayal (K.N.Singh) wants to eliminate her and acquire her wealth. Rajan (Ashok Kumar) is Seth ji’s assistant appointed to guard Roopa. Roopa runs away to seek peace. She meets Shankar (Anup Kumar) a truck driver whose lover Gauri is her look alike and wants to become rich. Gauri impersonates Roopa and starts to live her life. Rajan knows that she is not Roopa and tries to save her from the murder attempts of Seth ji. Rajan locates the real Roopa. They fall in love. Actually Rajan is a CID Inspector, who is assigned to gather proof against Seth ji’s involvement in drugs and narcotics smuggling. Sethji realizes that Rajan works for the CID. He plans to kill both Roopa and Rajan, but Shankar helps them to escape and save themselves. With the help of Shankar, Gauri and Rupa, Rajan gathers proof and finally arrests Seth ji. Gauri realizes that money only is not enough to be happy, and one needs love (of Shankar) too. And Roopa realizes that true love does not bother about money at all.

As Arun ji has mentioned, it was the time and era in the career of Ashok Kumar when he was past his prime as a romantic hero. He had transitioned into character roles, and still continued to be the lead actor in films on the themes of crime dramas and gangsters. Movies such as ‘Inspector’ (1956), Mr. X (1957), ‘Night Club’ (1958), ‘Howrah Bridge’ (1958), ‘Kangan’ (1959), ‘Kala Aadmi’ (1960), ‘Warrant’ (1961), and ‘Flat No. 9’ (1961) etc. mostly found him playing the role of a police or a CID inspector.

Enjoy this wonderful duet from the baton of Dattaram.

mil gaye duniya mein jeene ke sahaare
ye mast nigaahen, ye gori gori baahen

(It is fortunate)
I have found in this world
Companions that are a sustenance for life
These lovely mischievous eyes
These fair arms (to hold me)

bhool nahin jaana dekho rut ye nazaare
ye pehli mulaqaaten, ye pyaar bhari baaten

Ah yes, but promise me
You will not forget
This time, these vistas
Our first encounters
And our first exchanges of love

ae haseen, naazneen, ho gayaa dil teraa
aa chalen, door kahin, saath hai tera mera
jhoome re mera dil, naache re mera dil
jhoome jhoome mera dil

O my dainty and graceful companion
My heart is now yours
Come, let’s go
Someplace faraway, together
My heart sings with happiness
And turns a dancing step

zindagi pyaar mein, kaisa ye rang laayee
le gayee dil mera, teri ik angdaai
tere gaalon pe til, ye to hai mera dil
hai hai mera dil

Wonderful colors of love
That life now brings to us
Your movements, beckon me
And have taken my heart away
This tiny beauty spot on your cheeks
That’s where my heart is
Ah yes, my heart is

Thanks for the post and details Sudhir ji 🙂 Enjoyed the song after a long gap.
I remember to have listened this song earlier may be on radio or may be it is in my collection (I have to check). But had forgotten the movie name and other details. Thanks a lot for this wonderful gem.
Yes , a beautiful reminder of Dattaram. So many artists have contributed to this ocean of HFM that we cannot imagine and only realize it when we we come across such creations.
Regards,
