daraaren daraaren hain maathhe pe maula
marammat muqaddar ki kar do maula
These lines written by Prasoon joshi for this qawwali in the film Delhi – 6 have a fascination, that in indescribable. But still let me try.
What I can deduce is this :
There are deep lines etched on my forehead. The lines of worry and the lines of my destiny(which is checkered ).
O God Almighty repair those cracks and thus my destiny.
“Delhi -6” released in 2009, the second film made by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was not a moment ahead of its times. Still it did not enjoy the box office success that his first film “Rang de basanti’ had. As Peeveesee wrote in her post of Independence day, ‘Rang de Basanti” was a huge success and inspired masses into protesting against injustice and holding candle light vigil’s. There we had a visible enemy in corrupt politicians and their corrupt practices, which can be seen from the naked eye. On the other hand “Delhi-6″ hinted at the enemy within each one of us , or the evil that the society itself harbours in the shape of ‘Kaala Bandar”. How the bogey of “kaala Bandar” is created and than propagated by the forces around for their self gain was effectively outlined in the film. I hope some of us among the regulars here, saw it or appreciated the inherent message.
As someone said, ‘power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely’. The greed of power and more power is the sole motivation behind corruption. Power not only for making money, but to use that money for still more power. And the media is the most powerful tool in this quest. This corruption of motive’s and thoughts has slowly but surely eroded the objectivity , sense of perspective and balance around us.
Hindi film have always reflected the times and happening around us. This is also one such film. So was a film released last year, another Sonam Kapoor starrer, Pankaj Kapoor’s “Mausam”. How that wily Pankaj Kapoor managed to make a garland of event of last 20 years, finely intertwined with the lives of the central characters of Sonam Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, was just amazing. It took me a lot of time to absorb the meaning of that film. In fact it only registered as a I read a review of ‘Rock star” which was drawing parallel between the two movies. Still ‘Rock star’ went on to win a lot of awards, and Pankaj Kapoor’s maiden directorial effort has gone unrecognized. Had the movie been a little more stark and not beautifully packaged as it was with cinematography and fine songs, it would have been booed out of the theatre’s.
Delhi – 6 was a thought provoking film. Film like these show the mirror image of not just us but different things around us, that are affecting our thought process and have maximum impact on the impressionable minds of the new generation. But we as audience are still not matured to see meaningful films, it seems. And the more discerning among us manage to brush these thought provoking film aside and keep on enjoying films like ‘3-Idiots’ , ‘Munna Bhair MBBS’ “Goalmaal” series, so on and so forth. We a 65 year old nation, that is supposed to live, eat and drink movies, of course whenever we are free from the other national obsession of cricket 🙂 .
So, here comes ‘ eid-ul-fitr ‘ after month long fasting and praying and donating to the needy. Not that other months of the year are not for being exemplary in every way, but Ramzaan is a special month. And what better way to celebrate ‘ eid’ than with a qawwali or mushaira. So here is the qawwali, one of the best of A. R. Rehman’s. As stated above it is written by Prasoon Joshi, who must be congratulated for his lyrics not just of this film but other poems also that he has written for “Rang de Basant” & ” 3-Idiots” . Delhi-6 had Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor in the lead roles, with Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Om Puri, Pawan Malhotra etc. as supporting cast. If i take out this qawwali from the songs of this film, the rest are all competing for the best song. Songs like “Rehna tu hai jaisa tu ” , “Massak-kali” , ‘Dil gira dafa’atan” and Sasural genda phool’ are well remembered. There were two theme songs ‘kaala kaala kaala bandar” and ‘Yeh dilli hai”. Even this qawwali is a like a theme songs as it plays out at various stages in the film.
Only a partial video of this qawwali is available on youtube, which shows Eid prayers at the historical Jama Masjid in Delhi. So this qawwali is more apt than I expected. I am giving the lyrics as per the full Audio. Also giving a link of a live performance of the the same, by ARR and Javed Ali.
As a line in the song goes :
toot ke bikharna mujh ko zaroor aata hai
aur na ibaadat waala sha’aur aata hai
It is easy for me to break into pieces(have a tendency to break and shatter) and lose control. And no I dont have the maturity of praying and asking. In other words I am not mature enough to take control of my destiny and even to know what to ask from the Almighty.
arziyaan saari main chehre pe likh ke laaya hoon

Here is wishing eid mubarak to all readers of the blog. And praying that God Almighty has not sealed our fates and that he may grant us mercy.

Excellent write-up on a beautiful qawwali. I can now appreciate it much more than what I first heard this qawwali when the film was released.
Just wanted to know whether this is a naat sung in qawwali style. I always get confused between a naat and a qawwali.

This is a naatiya qawwali. I was out of station since last weekend, so was not able to visit the blog and reply. Thanks for appreciating.
