This article is written by Sadanand Kamath, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.
Recently, I came across a rare song ‘saajan tumse pyaar karoon main’ from the film BADNAAM (1952) sung by Lata Mangeshkar. It was written by Hasrat Jaipuri and set to music by Basant Prakash. I always felt that this talented music director belonging to the golden era of Hindi film songs was side tracked by Hindi film industry for reasons best known to them. Here is a song from this movie. This song is sung by Geeta Dutt and chorus. I had great difficulty in identifying the actors in the picturisation. They are all familiar faces but they are so young in this picturisation that they are almost unrecognisable. Shashikala lip syncs in Geeta Dutt’s voice. Her accomplice in this picturisation is played by a thin bearded person, who is none other that I S Johar. From the picturisation, it seems that they are upto some mischief as befit the conduct of villains in Hindi movies.
