This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog. This is his 500th writeup in the blog !
Gosh, it has been a long trek already, and the night is very late as I complete the preparation and the write up for this post. And I am thinking about the 29 months, that seem to have flown by already. I had signed up for getting email notifications from this blog on 1st October, 2010, and today, it is exactly 2 years and 5 months. And what a heady and euphoric journey it has been so far. And all along the way, it has been raining music – most wonderful, and the best. Many beloved and favorites, many loving memories refreshed again with the help of friends on this bandwagon, and yes, so many, oh so many unheard gems to fall in love with on the first hear.
It has been an ongoing ‘Yesterday Once More’ for the past 29 months, as I have taken trips down to my childhood each and every day of these 29 months. Memories of leaning and standing next to the radio for long stretches, waiting for the favorites to play; rushing over to neighbor’s place to watch Chitrahaar or the weekly film on television; sometimes the regular place would be out of bounds, so then scurrying around the street to locate another home that would be friendly enough; and when all failed, then just to hang on to a window or doorway trying to catch the sound from the telecast, even if the visual was out of reach. Playing the antaakshari in the school bus. That was mostly on the afternoon trip back home, because the morning trip was full of trepidation about a test not prepared for or a homework assignment not fully done, and songs would be the furthest from the tiny minds. But the afternoon trip was another story altogether. And then the occasional opportunities to accompany the grown ups to a large screen bonanza, that would be most certainly be followed by some snacks and Coca Cola. And no bothers where to get tickets or what bus to take to go home. Ah, delightful memories that spell fun all over again.
And you know, that is the most wonderful thing about this blog. There is something everyday. Either a wonderful memory replayed, or an unheard melody that takes you by surprise, and I feel like I am ten years old once again, whooshing around with wows – what a song, what a tune, what a pace, and have you heard it too? Thank you, thank you, thank you O dear Gaanewaala, Raanchiwaala; and all the friends together in this journey. With your benefaction, I am ten years old once again, and I have been ten years old for the past 29 months. 😀 😀 Thank you all.
This song has been waiting in the wings for a long time, and this write up has been a long time in making. If you will view the clip of this song, I am sure you will understand. At the turn of the year, Arun ji had mentioned this song in one of his comments, and so I knew I could not wait too much longer to bring out this totally rare and obscure gem. And a very unique, very trend setting and an absolutely new idea, way back then in 1939 when this would have been released. And the lovers would have got a completely new inspiration, a completely new dimension on how to woo and how to compliment their beloved. Many more such compilations have followed, but this I am sure is going to stand out forever, as the first of its kind. As you will know when you hear this song, it has nothing in it other than names of the famous and popular stars of that time. And the gentleman and the lady take turns to compliment each other saying that they think of the famous and beautiful and handsome stars when they think of their other. And of course the subliminal message is also apparent. In trying to compare their beloved to the handsome and beautiful stars, they keep counting and adding names, just because all these star names put together still fall short of the eminence of their beloved. And so they search and add one more name, but apparently it does not suffice. And so it continues, the epithets and the comparison falling just short of the real benchmark. Kudos to the poet who first thought of this idea, to construct the entire song with just star names with nothing else thrown in. Except of course, the love these two lovebirds have for each other, that they are piling one superlative after another, on to the beloved.
The film is Gharib Ke Laal, from 1939. This is a stunt picture from the banner of Jai Bharat Movietone, Bombay, and it is directed by BM Vyas. The music director is Sageer Asif, and the lyrics of the thirteen songs in this film are written by two poets – Rafi Kashmiri and Munshi Kaabil. The specific information of which song by which poet, is not yet traceable. The star cast of this film includes Navinchandra, Kokila, Ghulam Mohammed, Kamla, Mirza Musharraf, Kamla Karnataki, FM Butt, Rafi Kashmiri, Sageer Asif, Himmatlal. As you can make out, the music director and one poet are also listed in the star cast.
As per the information from the record itself, this song is sung by Mirza Musharraf and Kamla Karnataki. And seeing that both these names appear in the list of actors, one can safely surmise that this song was picturized on these two artists themselves. Having seen Mirza Musharraf in later films in small comedy roles, it is really fun to listen to him sing this romantic fun song. Oh wish we could lay hands on the video of this song, I would have loved to watch it and see the younger Mirza Musharraf, serenading this lady love.
As I constructed the clip for this song, I have scrounged around to gather maximum number of photographs from various sources. The major source of these photographs has been a very good reference book by Dr. RK Verma (Dehradun) titled ‘Filmography – Silent Cinema 1913-1934’. This is a painstaking compilation by Dr. Verma. And the best part of this book is that the latter third of the book is just photographs of the artists and the film makers of that period. This a wonderful set of rare photographs, that have become available through this book and I thank Dr. Verma for that. A few more photographs I was able to acquire from other sources on the internet and some friends. On the internet, one wonderful source is the web site called ‘Cineplot’, that has a large collection of very rare photographs and a compilation of very informative articles about many artists and film makers from the earlier decades. Thanks also to ‘Cineplot’ for making this treasure available on the internet.
Despite all the efforts so far, there still are a few names in this song that I could not locate photograph or information about. Specifically, the names are ‘Barwaa’, ‘Bimla’ or ‘Bimla Devi’, ‘Rosie’, and ‘Kaabili’. My suspicion is that this last name ‘Kaabili’ is the name of the poet Munshi Kaabil himself. Just a speculation, I do not have specific information to state this firmly.
And then there is one name that I have not been able to capture very clearly. Near the end of the song, the lady sings the line ‘tujhe surrender kahoon ya (??)’. I am not able to decipher the second name very clearly, and I request other readers and friends to help with this. The sound of the lady’s voice appears to say, ‘tujhe surrender kahoon ya ke wasti’ or ‘tujhe surrender kahoon ya de’varsni(?)’. I am not able to clearly decipher and decide this one name. Please help.
And yes, a very interesting note. The name of Mirza Musharraf also appears in the list of actors being recalled. 🙂

Dear Sudhir,
I heard this song for the first time. I do not recall any song from Hindi films which mentions names of so many actors. In fact, this song is a chronical of the major actors of the 30s. I like the idea of displaying the pictures of actors as their names come in the song.
And congratulations for 500th articles on this blog. With a journey of 29 months on this blog, your score of an average of 17 articles per month is very impressive. This can happen only when a person is in a musical trance most of the time and your are the one blessed with that power.
Thanks for keeping the readers of this blog engrossed in Hindi film songs through your esteemed articles.

Tujhe saigal kahun ya barwa is nothing but BARUA (P C Barua).
There were actresses called Bimla Devi and Miss Rose(about whom I had written long back on this Blog)
W M Khan(Alam Ara fame) was known as Kabuli in those days as he was a pathan from that area.(Like Jeevan was called kashmiri as he hailed from kashmir).
I hope all names are cleared now.

Congratulations Sudhir ji on 500th Post !!! thanks for this rare song ! i listen it for the first time, but the names are quite familiar, some of them which i am aware, some heard from my Father during our in-house discussions on movie.
And quite a trendsetter innovative lyrics, as at that time there would be more mythological and patriotic or social songs. Lastly, yes, this blog has given us many reasons to smile, and takes us back to those days when i was in my teens and listening radio programm at all india radio, vividh bharti and waiting for the wednesday binaca geetmala and more… thanks and congratulations once again !!!

Congratulations Sudhirji for a fantastic write-up, unique song and achieving a great milestone. Are there similar songs in later periods? One I can immediately recall is Raj Kapoor’s in Paapi in which he sells chudiyan and invokes the names of Nargis, Geeta Bali etc.

What a journey! 29 months brought you the priceless childhood memories. And your contribution to this blog during these 29 months must have given every fan of yours on this blog, a wonderful memories of their childhood, youth,……. Though I have missed first 14 months of yours on this blog, I am still thankful to you for giving me the pleasure and joy by sharing your knowledge and taking all extra efforts to dig out all possible information about the song, movie, artists, their pictures/photographs. I don’t have enough words to say thank you for everything you have done for all of us. Congratulations and wish to see the 1000th post in less than 29 months which will keep all of us like a 10 year old child. Thank you again. 🙂
