Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Laakh karo chaturaayi

Posted on: April 16, 2013

“Magadh Raj” (1946) must be one of the most obscure Hindi movies of all time. Hardly any information is available about this movie. Songs from this movie are not available on YT either. One can come across songs like this only in one’s own offline collection if any and there too one needs to search specifically for these songs.

I was specifically searching for songs penned by Pt Indra Chandra. As it is, majority of songs penned by Pt Indra Chandra were from 1940s and many of them are too rare to be available on YT. Since I am on a mission to discuss songs of Pt Indra Chandra (the regulars knows why 🙂 ), so in the process I am making available songs that were not available on YT.

In fact, our special occasion songs are also often like that. for example, the 100th song of Kidar Sharma, viz. Dekh hamen muskaaye kyun (Duniya Ek Saraai) was specifically uploaded by Sudhir ji for this special occasion. One day later, he specifically uploaded another rare Baisaakhi song from this movie.

Likewise, in the process of discussing Pt Indra songs, I uploaded a rare song viz. Hotel ka kinaara ho (Gunsundari).

The only way most music lovers will know about these songs are by visiting the blog since these songs were not there on YT and similar sites till they were specifically uploaded to discuss these songs. We in this blog love to discuss such rare songs and bring them to the notice of music lovers. In some cases in the past, we have uploaded songs that were considered extinct by all music lovers. Take for example the songs of “Tilasmi Duniya” (1946). Sudhir Jee unearthed four presumably extinct songs from this movie and they were uploaded and discussed.

We do not just discuss songs ofcourse. Many of our writeups are invaluable sources of some vital information which may not be readily available elsewhere. The translation of many songs that have been provided in the blog are scholarly material. Make no mistake. Sudhir jee is actually contacted by JNU faculty and students for such matters. And he has been on TV ofcourse.

In fact all our regulars are extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the music that we discuss and the blog would not be what it is today without the active collaboration of all contributors and other regulars.

Why is it that so many knowledgeable and dedicated music lovers willingly collaborate on building up this musical monument brick by musical brick and that too without expecting anything in return ? If one tries to analyse it, one may get some great insight into interpersonal relations that is not taught in any textbooks.

My experience has taught me that love and respect is a currency that gets accepted everywhere and investing in it gives you handsome returns. What is more, this currency gets accepted in non human world as well.

Secondly, I have come to realise that one cannot judge a person’s real abilities based on how he projects himself in interviews. One needs to judge a person’s abilities based on how he acts on his own without feeling the need to project himself.

Thirdly, I have realised that a person gives his best when he believes in the cause and is passionate about it.

One needs to combine the above three, and then one can form a group of extremely dedicated and talented group in any field. And what is more, one can form such group even for non profit activities.

Assisted by advancement of technology, we can now form such groups of likeminded individuals online and achieve a lot. Our own blog is a good example of ikeminded music lovers coming together and collaborating to create a catalogue of Hindi movie (and non movie) songs that will one day help music lovers savour and appreciate this musical legacy of ours in a much better and fulfilling manner that what was possible till now.

What we do in this blog is supposed to be hobby for us, but the effort that each one of us puts in this hobby is easily more that what many people may be putting in earning their livelihood. Thousands of hours of manpower and thousands of hours of intellectual and relatively manual work has gone into bringing the blog to this shape. In future, we hope to see the blog scale newer heights as we continue to evolve with time.

We in this blog freely give credit to contributors. And that is all it takes for our contributors to keep working with renewed vigour for future contributions.

This blog takes most of my online time and as such I do not have much time left for other online activities. However, without my realising it, I manage to do lots of other online activities as well. For instance I became aware of fancy stuff like “twitter”and “facebook” sometime back. 🙂 Though I have opened accounts for both, I am a novice in such matters. I have not at all been active in “twitter”, though I have been trying to get a hang of facebook. I signed up with a few Hindi movie music groups a few months back. In one or two groups the administrators of the group enquired whether I was the same Atul of the Atulsongaday. Finding the administrators and members of these groups knowing me made me feel welcome there.

But by and large I have largely been a “sleeping ” member of facebook groups. I visit these groups once in a while. Sometimes I find the blog getting mentioned while discussing songs. I feel nice about that and I feel rewarded.

That way my facebook experiences have by and large been alright. Someday in future I may become a big facebook enthusiast but that time has not come yet.

Today morning I got up early in the morning. Or let us say that my dogs woke me up early as is their wont. I opened the computer and went online. Before opening the blog, I opened my email and from there went to facebook. I do not know why, but I decided to visit a group that I had rarely visited in the past. Perhaps the name of the group appealed to me because I was trying to think up some old songs to post (of Pt Indra Chandra, if possible). I opened that Facebook page. Though I had never visited that site in months, I began to find quite a few songs extremely familiar. I found links of rare songs uploaded by Sudhir ji as well as by me being provided by a member there. On checking futher, I saw that most posts of this member consisted of providing links to rare songs discussed in the blog and taking credit there for unearthing those rare songs. That left a bad taste in my mouth because all the hard work of unearthing these rare songs (including uploading them in some cases) was being done by us in the blog and a facebook member was seeking credit for unearthing these rare songs in that group. Seeing that most posts of that member coincided with the discussion of those songs in this blog a few hours ago, it was clearly a case of taking credit for the work done by us in the blog. That person could have just acknowledged the source but doing that would have perhaps taken the gloss off that person’s hard earned reputation as a digger of rare songs.

I was so upset that I was unable to concentrate on posting a few songs in the morning. Later, after recovering a bit, I uploaded a rare song from “Magadh Raj” (1946). It is so rare that it was not there on YT till now. The lyricist is Pt Indra Chandra of course. Music is composed by Bulo C Rani. The song is sung by a female voice that sounds familiar though I cannot identify her. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the singer.

The lyrics of this song are quite nice too. Such a nice song had got buried under the debris of time. Fortunately I was able to unearth it thanks to my search for songs of Pt Indra Chandra.

So here is this rare song from “Magadh Raj” (1946) for the listening pleasure of the music lover.

Searching for such rare songs, uploading them and discussing them takes some serious effort. I request that person to give credit to this blog in case that member decided to discuss this song in that facebook group. Remember I too am a member of that group.

Dear Atul

Understand ur pain. This is exactly what i was trying to tell about this rafi saab excel a few months ago, while u guys were of the opinion that should not criticize somebody else’s hard work and so on. You are dealing with new generation here – borrow/copy/steal whatever it takes is the motto. There are online tools available which would tell u if any of ur text material is being used somewhere else on the web. Even if someone has changed a few words here and there, it will still find it. If i were you, i would not be making a request to person copying ur stuff. I would post it right here in the write-up with the links from his facebook page. I would also go and make similar comments on his page and make sure more and more people online become aware of such events. You are being too nice to not reveal the person’s identity. Thats not how it works in today’s world. Hopefully u shall learn ur lesson.

Thanks for you support. I have posted the youtube link of this song in that facebook page. The picture of HMV dog in the link is same as that in the link of “Gunsundari” song posted there by this person. Moreover people in that facebook page will hopefully see through the facts because a few of them seem to know me there.

bluefire ji,
You are right.
When first I learnt about this THEFT,I-being a member of that group-wrote to that lady that she should be fair by acknowledging the credit, from where she took this song. She replied-from U Tube !
This is a blatant lie and then I tore her apart and proved that it was available NOWHERE except Atul ji’s blog and she should have taken the opportunity to mend the mistake. She has not yet replied.

Atul Ji, just read this post after bluefire ji gave me the link to this article on another article on this blog. That is so cheap what the lady did. I know how you must have felt. Like mentioned before, we seem to be living in an age when “kuchh bhi chalta hai”. That is the reason, why blogs like ours give all of us the warmth that all of us so appreciate, value and love.

Forget about that one cheap woman Atul JI, Hum itne saare aapke chaahne waale idhar hain, we are the ones that matter … the rest of them can go thel lene :).

We love you a lot Atul Ji, and please do not let these tribulations affect you and disturb you.

Dear Atulji
I am sorry to hear about your tribulations. Unfortunately. nobody is going to admit that he/she has stolen something which did not belong to him/her.

Giving one line credit is all that it takes. But that person then would need to give credit to this blog in all her posts because she almost entirely relies upon the posts of this blog to pass off as a rare song expert there. Worse, she would cut and paste this blog’s writeup and lyrics verbatim as well. Well, I have pointed out the facts in the facebook group. I find two such posts by this person getting deleted from the group. So luckily some action has been taken there.

I agree with bluefire that you are too nice in not revealing this thief’s identity. That is the only way such dishonest people will learn a lesson, if at all. While it gives me no specific pleasure in being confrontational, unfortunately, there is no other choice. Or else they go on merrily swindling other people’s works– and in today’s (in many ways cursed) online world, it is incredibly easy to copy and paste. But by the same token, when people like you point it out on a large platform such as this, it will certainly deter the copycats to some extent at least. I am sure you have read about my experiences on my blog, the link to which I see bluefire has given.

Yes I have read about your experience quite some time ago when it was initially posted. It is indeed very easy to cut and paste and pass the information as one’s own, but it is equally easy for others to find out the true facts if it is pointed out.

This facebook person has a long history of doing such things in the belief that others will not be able to find it out.

In my experience, if one gives credit then one earns goodwill with the original content writer. Not giving credit and latter being caught does not do much good in the long run. But I suppose there are people who feel that one can rise in the esteem of others through such shady methods.

Like in real life, one needs to be on one’s toes in the online world too, I suppose. And hopefully I will be more vigilant in future.

Thanks for putting up the wonderful song which is one of my favourites, the singer is Amirbai Ji, a different kind of classical but seductive song by her.
